RadRidesByDan Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 (edited) Hey George53 buddy, thanks for emailing me and checking if everything was cool with me. Here you are George, the car that you saw in person when you'ze was litlle at the track Here's something you dont see every day, Allison V-12 aircraft powered home made dragster from the 50's. Most know who Art Arfons was and what he did for the automotive and racing. This is one guy who either had a death wish or just plain nuts. But through his engineering of dragsters, numorous land speed record breaking cars, to monster truck pullers he was one of the most famous pioneers of racing with his Jet engine powered 1/4 milers.....so I decided to build this from scratch except the Allison engine and see what i would be able to accomplish. Frame rails from styrene square rod and round rod, Allison aircraft motor from the Revell parts pack, wheels from the Ford F-350 dually, tires from old 1940's truck and as for the body..... lets say I had 2 choices..... 1-buy an aircraft kit at a cost of $40+ and hope to be the right shape and size.....OR.... UM! think WAY outside the box and UH Yikes!! devile go to and adult store and buy a torpedo for $7.95, LMAO gut it... so I can cut it up and weld the nose end to the frame which happens to be a perfect fit and shape. Guess which one i picked Edited March 15, 2009 by RadRidesByDan
cruzn Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Looks good... and a really Outside of the Box on the body.. Keep us Posted on this.. I would Like to try to do one on the Jet Engine green Monster

The little story behind the body just cracked me up.Now THAT'S what's called "Dare to be different" BIG TIME!!!! I'll never see adult toys in the same light again!!!!!
Scott Colmer Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Great build - great subject. I always admired the guys who would buy fingernail polish, guess you beat that one! Scott
RodneyBad Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Cool. Great looking motor and frame you got going.. Don't think I'll be able to look at it the same way now.. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Mike Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Like I said elsewhere Dan. Great use of "household materials" LMAO and nicely executed work on a rare subject.
Joe Handley Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I'd have never thought to use something like that for a body.............................
James W Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 That is a great old car. It's good to see someone doing it in 3D.
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) thanks for all the great comments guys. Very appreciated. when I purchased the UH UM!! body ..... the Mrs was with me, store policy is that they open the package and put batteries in it to assure that it works before you leave the store. I was doig fine until it got to this part.... The sales lady asked my wife if she wanted to assure that it worked and she replied to the sales lady" its not for me its for him" RIGHT THEN!!! my ears were on fire ...at that point I was left with lilttle choice but to explain what it was for. The sales lady asked if I could send some pics after it was done. Her husband builds model cars too and she said that without the pics he wouldnt believe her Edited March 16, 2009 by RadRidesByDan
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 changed the tires, found tires that are a lot closer to the real ones, had to shave own the wheels to work with a thinner truck tier.....and mocked up the front end to see ride height. Also got the roll bar and back rest done too.
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 updated pics. This front axle is just for mock up. the stance is actually a littlt higher in the front than what I have it. Finally got the primer on it and next will be the dark green. After lookin at some old pics. The green is not or doesnt look like the John Deere green. its quite a bit darker.
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 Ok More updating pics. I found a green in Tamyia paint that is very close to what the real car is or was lilke. I would have to say about 90% accurate, I think my color is a tad darker I also got the front panel made that sports the steering column and pedal assembly http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e343/RadRidesByDan/Art%20Arfons%20Green%20Monster%206/GreenMonsterV-1239.jpg[/img
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 Well....Its a finally done. I will be posting the the in the finished section too.

jbwelda Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 wow! that is a great replica, and art arfons was/is a pure daredevil! look at that frame work on the "real" photo: they werent worried about weight, obviously! how long did it take to build this? i am hoping you didnt just put this together in like a week because if thats so, its double amazing!
RadRidesByDan Posted March 16, 2009 Author Posted March 16, 2009 how long did it take to build this? i am hoping you didnt just put this together in like a week because if thats so, its double amazing! I started building this car on March 3rd 2009....so 12 days to build. To be honest, its was not a very complicated car to build. The motor is the most complicated thing on it. The rest of the build consists of 27 pieces of plastic, 1 torpedo , from the parts box - 2 axles, 4 shocks, 6 tires, 1 seat, 1 steering wheel and 1 set of pedals. Thanks for the comments....very appreciated.
gonzo64nova Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I love these unusual builds, they always require alot of scratch building but thats half the fun.Does it still vibrate so the girls will like it too!
RadRidesByDan Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 Does it still vibrate so the girls will like it too! Only at high speeds
