1951 Talbot Lago T26 Record cabriolet

Hello,

  You may remember I recently participated in a local build-off where the topic was Corvettes.  The local folks have come up with the first build-off of the year. The topic: European road car, no race cars. 
Since the topic is quite broad, and I always want to be different, I'm not doing a Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche or VW.

I entered these:

Second choice: 1906 Renault Towne car in 1/32

 

But the main choice is this:


The time is only 4 months, so I doubt I'll finish both. Especially since the main one is a Heller.
I also registered a Lambo and a Ferrari but who am I kidding?  

Anyways, here we go with the Talbot. This will be the road counterpart to the Talbot race car I did a while ago.






First order of business: Mold lines, which are prominent in this kit.






Started with the rear left quarter.

 

Not much but it is officially started. Stay tuned for more...

  Rescribed the trunk and worked the mold lines in the back.  A test coat of primer shows we are moving in the right direction.

By the way, this is a big car. Here it is next to a 1/25 '63 Corvette. The Talbot is 1/24 but still the size difference is significant.

  Looks awful now, but patience. Butterflies start as ugly worms.
Worked the mold lines carefully as this body has many compound curves.

So the hood halves are the second and third part I touch on this build. Already ditching some kit's parts and will attempt to hinge them...








Only Heller would mold the body in one color and the hood in another color.

Your Talbot Lago Record Cabriolet engine looks really good on the revolving turntable Ismael . . . Nice detail work.

I have also purchased a revolving turntable from Amazon, which is 10 inches diameter, and a 15 inch diameter circular mirror from IKEA . . . The turntable is great for displaying scale model engines, cars, figures and buildings, especially for use in YouTube video filming . . .

Talbot's chassis. Un-necessarily complex 15 parts.
Hard to see but there are 5 colors here: Flat black, gloss black enamel, gloss black acrylic, Obsidian, Gunmetal

  Wilson Pre-selector gearbox and driveshaft.  Once connected to the engine it will properly align to the centerline.

This is a very nice scale classic French car taking shape here.

That Stingray  body 1/25th scale instead of 1/24th being used as a comparison? It's just that it looks a bit too small compared to the 1/24th scale Talbot body so not really a proper scale comparison unfortunately.

Heller have brought out a number of unusual classic car kits over the years that we should be pleased about. However, some of them have some quite quirky eccentric ways in which the kits were  designed when it comes to building them.

Their Delage kit for example has a joint right across the top of both the rear wheel arches. To me that is just bad kit design, and would be difficult enough for a very experienced modeller to rectify.

  The Corvette is 1/25 and the Talbot is 1/24 so the comparison may not be that dramatic. But it is still a big car.

  Back to this project.  This looks more comfortable than my own sofa!  ?

 

Talbots always had a "T" in the clutch and the brake pedals. Never in the accelerator.

  One of the most prominent features of Talbot-Lagos was the use of Wilson pre-selector gearboxes.  But in the model it is a big omission.  So I have to make it myself.

To the best of my knowledge, the only two Wilson Pre-selector gear shifters I have ever seen in scale were both scratchbuilt... by me    ?
This one and the Talbot race car I finished back in 2022.







As a reference here is the one from the race car.


The shifter was painted black on road cars, polished metal on the race car. Slightly different styles but the exact same function. My understanding is that the gearbox (and all the powertrain for that matter) was the same between the race car and the road cars which I have seen referred to as "race cars in evening gowns"
