NOBLNG Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 I copied a link to an older thread on this forum. I can paste it into notebook and the link works. When I try to paste it into a reply here nothing happens. ?
peteski Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 (edited) If you are using a "real" computer (not a phone or tablet) then I can offer a hint. When I post URL links I first click on the chain link symbols on the top pf the message compose window. That opens up a dialog box asking to enter the URL. I past the link into there (usually leaving the "text" field blank), and click "Insert into post" button. I don't just past the URL link directly into the compose window. Like this https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/191128-can’t-paste-links/#comment-2869491 EDIT: I wonder if you are asking why when you paste the URL to another thread in this forum into the compose window, it doesn't automatically expand into a small image of the thread? If that is the question then I don't know why it would not do that automatically. Edited April 26, 2024 by peteski
NOBLNG Posted April 26, 2024 Author Posted April 26, 2024 It seems to be working again.? I use an iPad. My PC baffles me since I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10.?
NOBLNG Posted May 7, 2024 Author Posted May 7, 2024 Ok. It’s not working again.? I am on an ipad. I can copy the link in the address bar at the top of the page. Then it will not paste into my reply message. I can however paste it into my notepad app. Then, if I re-copy the link from notepad I can paste it into my reply. Other websites I can copy and paste directly to my reply wjndow. It used to be when I pasted a thread link, it would expand into a small image of the thread and ask me if I want only a link instead. Now nothing happens when I select paste.
NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 Can a moderator tell me why I can’t copy a link from the address bar and paste it into a thread here? I have no issues doing it on other forums that I am on. Thanks in advance…Greg.
peteski Posted November 7 Posted November 7 (edited) I don't know how you are doing it but I always use the "link" icon at the top of the compose window. That opens up a popup where I copy or type in a link, and it also allows you to type in the alternate text to show up in the message. I also use Windows ^C and ^V to copy/paste the link text (not the copy/paste pulldown menus). You didn't mention, but if this is on a smart phone, I have no idea. If one copies a link directly into the message compose area, depending on the link, it might expand automatically (if it is a link to a photo), or post the alphanumeric representation of link itself. But for links which can't expand to a photo, I prefer using the method above. https://www.modelcarsmag.com Above I just copied the MCM URL directly into the compose area and it did remain a clickable link. So it works for me. Edited November 7 by peteski
NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 (edited) Ok, I tried using the link at the top of the compose window and it appears to have worked for pasting the alphanumeric link. I did mention that I am on an iPad in a previous query in this thread. Thanks. https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/191128-can’t-paste-links/#comment-3090840 Edited November 7 by NOBLNG
NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 The link still does not want to expand into a small clickable window though. https://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/204206-‘39-chevy-by-duval/#comment-3087867

NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 (edited) Well this time I held my finger on the thread title until a window popped up that offered the option to “copy link” instead of doing it in the address bar at the top of the page and it worked….from this forum. Edited November 7 by NOBLNG

Then I will choose “display as a link instead”.
NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 If I copy the address bar from another website, then click on the link option in this reply window, I get this: And it appears like this in my reply: https://www.hotrod.com/how-to/mopp-0109-chryslers-poly-head-engine

NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 (edited) If I copy a link from my note pad and paste it here I get this window: And it appears as a clickable link only. https://www.hemmings.com/stories/lost-concept-cars-the-shelby-cobra-based-ford-cougar-ii/ Edited November 7 by NOBLNG

NOBLNG Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 But I can paste it into the link option above so that at least eliminates having to paste it into notebook and re-copying it. Thanks ! https://www.hemmings.com/stories/lost-concept-cars-the-shelby-cobra-based-ford-cougar-ii/ 1
peteski Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Directly pasted links will display differently depending on what the link points to. If it is an image or a MCM forum thread, it will get expanded. If not, it will just be a clickable text link. If you use the "insert link" button, those will always show up only as clickable text link, regardless where they point (images or MCM forum threads). Again, this is on a computer, not on a smart phone.

Not sure if that is for compatibility or security. 1

Not sure if that is for compatibility or security. You can embed preview data in the page. Most platforms don't do that, but YouTube most likely does.
