drodg Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I am going to be building a 71 Demon 340 new tool and it will be black. I haven't painted a car black gloss in a long time if ever and wondering what is the best black to use? Thanks everyone.
espo Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I have had good luck with Tamiya TS-14 Black in rattle cans. I'll also recommend their Clear Gloss as a topcoat. 1
Bainford Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 (edited) A second vote for Tamiya lacquer, either the TS-14 spray bomb as used on David's beautiful Starliner above, or airbrush the LP-1 bottle paint (after thinning, of course). If you wish to use clear, I would recommend the Tamiya stuff as well. Some people find black troublesome to apply and finish, and the Tamiya paint is as user-friendly as it gets, and looks great. Fat Brian Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Tamiya and Duplicolor are my go to gloss blacks and you can't go wrong with either one, it's really whichever one you're the most comfortable using.
drodg Posted June 10, 2024 Author Posted June 10, 2024 Thanks. I have used Tamiya sprays for some time now but haven't painted black in so long was wondering what was best to use. Thanks again.
R. Thorne Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 (edited) I like the ts14. Edited June 10, 2024 by R. Thorne 3
bobss396 Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 (edited) TS-14 for sure, make sure you lay down enough coats if you plan to color-sand it. The day that Earnhardt got killed at Daytona, I was helping a kid my kids knew, he had an Earnhardt car going and his mom asked me to paint it for him. I used of all things a Rustoleum spray can. I gave the kid 10 minutes of free body work... damn... that came out great and needed no polishing. Edited June 11, 2024 by bobss396
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Only "difficult" part about painting anything black...model or real...is that it shows every flaw in the bodywork or prep. 2
Mike 1017 Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I agree, the key to a fabulous black paint job is body prep. Mike 1

I love painting black as it's almost always a great result. The only trouble I have with black is trying to photograph it.
R. Thorne Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 At the risk of going off topic and beating it to death, one of my future builds. 4
TNT Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 (edited) For me dupli color can't be beat. The gray sandable primer and black paint. I am using createx black on a chopper but i wish i had went duplicolor. May strip it and start over. Edited June 11, 2024 by TNT 1
