I see what you mean.  Once the tire is mounted they look too bright and dull.

I don't know what look you envision but if it were me, I would be aiming for something more like a darker magnesium. Maybe start with a darker color like Tamiya dark panzer grey followed by titanium silver; maybe even start with Mr Color steel followed by one of the silvers.

I use these  https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08HLWF8MY/?th=1   to make test paint test cards.  They are paper card but are a decent white and robust enough to do the job.  Small rectangles of Evergreen polystyrene if I want something more robust.  Make it easy to test different combination ideas. I make a reference card with every new color that finds it's way into my shop.

Keep at it, I am sure inspiration will strike and you will get to where you want to be.

cheers, Graham

Thanks Graham.  I appreciate all the info.  I'll get something worked out.

I decided to let the wheels set for now so I can do a little brain storming on what to do.  I did get the engine painted and wired.  Still needs some touch up but pretty much done.  I did a mock-up to make sure the plug wires would clear.  Can you guess what the body color is going to be???

Hi Bob, another good looking build sir. That engine looks all business! For the wheels, if you are looking for a cast aluminum look, try Tamiya silver leaf with matte clear over top. This is a recipe Dennis Lacy shared with me way back, and it looks very convincing. I’m just a rattlecan guy, so you may get even better results with an airbrush.

Cheers, Steve

Thanks Steve.  Well...after the failed attempt with the flat Aluminum I shot it with the Tamiya Silver Leaf and then shot a Matte clear over that and didn't like the looks.  I ended up shooting some Tamiya Gloss Aluminum over that and I'm going with it.  Just need to figure out what color on the lug nuts.

The flathead looks good in the Willy’s. I love what you did with rims. This is going to be a great build for sure.

Much obliged James.  Getting headers to fit is the next issue at hand.

Bob I like how you take your time too get your model to what you want it when completed..

Thank's.  Yeah, somethimes Carl the paint just does not turn out like I picture it in my head so I have to keep at it until I get closer.

I now have the door hinges in place and I'm satisfied with how the doors fit.  The kit supplied kick plates are chrome and they just don't seem to fill up the area so I found some 1.5mm half round stock that fills up the slot and doesn't look to bad.  I'm looking at the instructions and the kit comes with chrome body trim, door trim, and hood trim but doing a search online of the 41 Willy's and don't think I've seen anyone use them??? I also I think I have the drive train in place and looking good.

That's looking really good, those doors seem to fit pretty well. I saw your video today, I really think you should look into making your own headers. From what I've seen, it gives great results and a car like this absolutely NEEDS fenderwell headers (IMHO). If you don't, it's your build. Anyway great job on this on Bob!

Yeah, I was supprised that the doors fit as good as they did .  I'm still working with the kit header trying to make them work.

Looking good. SWC team still had chrome trim on the Willys in '61 and '62

I now have a rolling chassis and I had to add a riser to the engine to get the bug catcher in the proper location through the hood.  I'm thinking about a moon tank and battery in the trunk.

Update: Just found these small NOS bottles from the Iceman that may look pretty kewl in the trunk as well.

Well...seems like one problem after another.  I had to end up using the kit headers which look better anyway but they were to long and would drag the pavement.  I had to cut about 1/4" off each.

Oh yeah Buddy,  very nice adjustments ya made to get things right?

Thanks.  This is always the problem when using aftermarket parts.  They just don't jive with the kit parts.

I worked on the radiator and header install this morning.  I'm a happy camper on how the headers turned out.  They still hang a little low even after the mod due to the Massive size of the Ardun heads.

It's all looking good there my Friend.  Engine fit looks perfect.

Thanks Buddy.  I think next I need to get the body prep work done and throw some primer on it.

Dang Bob you’ve really been at it. The roller is looking great.

Thanks Tony.  Yeah, I've been poking along with this one.
