SgtForce Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Hey everyone, 1st post here. Couldn't find a post that answered this. I am building Salvinos JR William Byron Axalta kit (the black with rainbow stripes). The car was flat black, with glossy stripes, numbers, sponsors, etc. I am worried about the decals silvering if I apply them to a flat black car. What are my options here? I consider myself a fairly seasoned modeler, but multi-finish is new to me. Any help would be great!
Bainford Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 Looks tricky. My initial suggestion would be to paint the car gloss black, apply the decals, then shoot the whole thing with the appropriate matt, satin, or semi-gloss clear. The problem, of course, is the colours, which cover the majority of the car, will be non-gloss too. You are right though; painting the car flat black will result in silvered decals. 2
bobss396 Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 ^^ What he said. I did a flat red Nova recently and the decals did silver somewhat. Hindsight is 20-20.
Mothersworry Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I'm not familiar with the model you mention so I'm not sure how practical this suggestion is but perhaps cutting away any clear areas of decal material from the images will work. With the proper setting solutions (compatible with the decals) the decals should stick to the flat finish just fine and without any clear areas...no silvering Fer what it's worth...
Rich Chernosky Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 I would go with Trevors suggestion. The decals will stick better on the gloss. After the flat or semi has dried you can use a very soft camel hair brush and apply Future to just the decals the get them to shine.
SgtForce Posted July 5, 2024 Author Posted July 5, 2024 Thanks guys. Yeah might go with that method. What are we using in place of future nowadays?
Rich Chernosky Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 2 hours ago, Horrorshow said: What is silvering of decals? Silvering of decals is when the clear edge of the decal shows. It is supposed to be clear and match the background. Flat paint has a very slight texture and decals don't stick well to it. Kinda like scotch tape on a dusty concrete floor. Silvering most often occurs on flat paint but it can happen on any surface. Depends on the decal and the glue used.
Oldriginal86 Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 On surfaces that aren’t glossy it’s best to cut as close as possible to the image. I’ve never had luck with decal solutions making them stick better to these surfaces. It’s more to soften and allow the decal to lay in the contours.

Here are some: You will find mostly military subjects because those are usually painted using flat finish paints (when silvering is most likely to occur).
Claude Thibodeau Posted July 7, 2024 Posted July 7, 2024 Hi! You might experiment with Tamya's SEMI-gloss black. It might just be eggshell enough to look like the real car, and smooth enough to avoid silvering. Good luck! CT
SgtForce Posted July 8, 2024 Author Posted July 8, 2024 Thank you all for the suggestions, I've decided to just do another scheme. Not confident enough to do it as clean as I'd like. Doing Reddicks 3Chi. Will save the Byron decals for if I come across a Larson kit cheap ?
