mrmike Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 My newest project-AMT's International Scout II. This kit is only a couple of years old, but it is molded in the same colored plastic as my old International SSII Scout from ERTL. This kit was a gift from my friend Tim Rhine and it has no decals which is not a problem for me. My body paint will be Tamiya TS-43 Racing Green and the interior will be a dark tan. The interior will have the CB radio installed under the dash and the antenna mounted on the roof. One of the things this kit is known for is the lack of a radiator on this inside of the engine compartment. If there is room for one, I will add a radiator to the engine compartment to match the one on the outside of the engine compartment. 6
TNT Posted July 16, 2024 Posted July 16, 2024 Going to be cool. That thing is yellow. Green should look really sharp. I have been wondering about this kit, so thanks in advance for any pics.
mrmike Posted July 16, 2024 Author Posted July 16, 2024 Thanks Tony! It was probably meant to be built as the box art, but as a modeler, we strive to be different. I have made a change of the paint color to include a second color for the roof and that is white. Should look great as a tu-tone of white over green.
Chariots of Fire Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Best wishes on this project. I had some Monogram Mack fire truck kits in yellow and had trouble with the yellow bleeding through the primer. Hopefully whatever Ertl used will be ok. My problem was sporadic, though. It did not happen on all of the yellow kits I had.
Jonathan Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Green is an excellent choice, and I'll be watching this for sure! You probably know that this kit is ancient. But, I think it's a great addition to any collection. It's sort of a blank slate to do whatever you wish. My as-yet-unfinished Scout II, in Testor's Sublime Green: 3
mrmike Posted July 18, 2024 Author Posted July 18, 2024 (edited) Thanks Charles and Jonathan! The kit was manufactured in 2021, but the kit design goes back even further than that! I also have the International SSII kit by ERTL and it doesn't have a date on it, but if I had to guess, it goes back to the '70-'80s. Edited July 18, 2024 by mrmike

Both kits are almost exactly the same except the Body, Interior Tub, wheels and brush guard. I like them, despite the trashing they get for the shape issues with the grille and hood. 1
mrmike Posted July 18, 2024 Author Posted July 18, 2024 (edited) Alan, I like them because they are unusual subjects that you don't find elsewhere. Shape issues be d*****! I just happen to like them! Edited July 18, 2024 by mrmike 3
stavanzer Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 (edited) I could not agree with you more! Edited July 18, 2024 by stavanzer
mrmike Posted July 19, 2024 Author Posted July 19, 2024 (edited) Thanks Alan! There are some subjects that deserve to be replicate. The International Scout II is one of them. I do happen to like the Rallye version and maybe I'll try to replicate one. Edited July 20, 2024 by mrmike
mrmike Posted July 20, 2024 Author Posted July 20, 2024 I went to assemble the engine and the automatic transmission seems to be missing the pan for it and it is not in the kit. The instructions don't show one being used. I guess I'll have to look for one or make one. The wheels and tires have bee assembled and I have started painting the interior and the body. 1
stavanzer Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 As far as , I know, there was never a pan for the Tranny. Just the shape. 2
mrmike Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 I found one in my parts box. It's not exact but it is close so that is what I am going with. 2
dino246gt Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 I just made a simple flat piece of scrap styrene fit. One tip: IF you're jacking the Scout way up, you can mount the transfer case at an angle to reduce the angle of the front driveshaft. 4
mrmike Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 If I made one, I would make and mount a piece of styrene the size of the transmission mount and a slightly smaller piece about 1/16 inch smaller on top. I was fortunate to find one in my parts box as automatics are getting harder for me to find. 1
mrmike Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 I finished the engine assembly with wiring the engine and adding an ignition coil. The transmission pan has been added to the bottom of the trans. Now to paint the chassis black. I have also determined that this Scout II is over a 1979 vintage. 4
mrmike Posted August 2, 2024 Author Posted August 2, 2024 I finally painted the Scout II this morning. Have a look! The top will be painted white. 2
Goose1957 Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 That's a great looking color. Can't wait to see this one finished. Jeff
