Simo5555 Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Hi! Decided to do a small break from muscle cars and revell kits. Next up is a true italian classic - Ferrari 288 GTO, one of the best looking cars of all time (in my opinion - dont hate me ) I have tried to build it twice a lot of years ago and both times i gave up. First time, i didnt really know how to build models to begin with and this one isnt really a beginner friendly so it was a total loss. Second time i used spay cans and screwed up the paintjob: This is my third time. So lets see how it goes. 1
dino246gt Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 As a true Ferraristi, I LOVE the 288GTO! It IS one of the best looking cars ever, really. Go for it, I'll be watching with interest. They weren't ALL red! Ciao! 2

Every single 288 GTO you see in any color other than Rosso Corsa is either a wrap or a repaint. As far as I know there is only one white 288 GTO, which belonged to a superstar DJ in Britain, who became famous with repainting a whole bunch of exotic cars he owned in matching white. I am not hundred percent sure, but I think his 288 has been since sold and repainted back to red. All of them came out of the factory in identical spec - red with black interior and LHD. The only option was the red inserts in the seats. Same goes for the F40. It is definitely one of the best looking Ferraris and IMO it is grossly underrated. It was built to be a rally car and it is far rarer than any of the "special" Ferraris that followed and it is the last one to really earn the name GTO. 1 hour ago, Simo5555 said: Hi! Is it a repot of one of their Enthusiast series with full detail under both hoods? 2

I know, I should've said, "They don't HAVE to be red" LOL 1

Seems like they used the moulds from the enthusiast kit and reboxed it as this kit. The instructions says that a lot of parts are not used, but seems like all the engine and the trunk (frunk?) area parts are there. Just not the instructions on how to assemble them. The enthusiasts kit came with the masking tape for the windows too - these are also missing from this kit. Edited July 22, 2024 by Simo5555 1

Simo5555 Posted July 23, 2024 Author Posted July 23, 2024 (edited) Already have flashbacks from years ago ? This kit is hard. But details are insane - miles ahead of everything Revell has. It took 20 parts to just build this engine - and its still missing most of the parts Edited July 23, 2024 by Simo5555 1
Simo5555 Posted July 25, 2024 Author Posted July 25, 2024 So, painted the engine Didnt want it to look too shiny - being an almost 40 year old Ferrari racing engine, you know. So, first a black coat of primer. Then a coat of aluminium grey and some blackwash. Came out pretty good, but damn this kit is full of tiny bits. Its going to take awhile to get it done Then I tried to paint the exhaust - my idea was to paint the headers and turbos as stained titanium and the exhaust part as a heat burnt iron. So i tried to mix some paint to look like iron. Really liked it at first, but after painting, im not so sure about it anymore. Doesnt scream like "racing" enough. Maybe add a touch of brown to it or strip and start again? Have to think about it a bit 1
Simo5555 Posted July 27, 2024 Author Posted July 27, 2024 Did some bodywork Started like always - wetsand with 600 and 1000 grit sponge I usually use two different primer on my models - a coarser primer (usually the surfacer 1000) and something finer. This time i only used one (i ran out of surfacer 1000 ?). So time for some pink primer ? After that, the paint. Classic Ferrari Rosso Corsa. Wow, this paint is hot - literally. Hottest paint ive ever used. It reacts like crazy. You can almost feel the reactive heat when spraying. Made it a tricky to use - took my time and did very light coats. Came out pretty good in the end. Did get a very light reaction on the roof, but not that noticeable. 9
mrm Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 Actually the paint itself is not hot. What is hot is the reducer it was cut with, wherever you got it from. This is why there are different reducers for different temperatures (weather). Looking really good. The clear coat will definitely make it pop. 1
beeRS Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 I love the GTO! One of the most beautiful cars ever IMO. Good work on the paint. What brand of primer was that? I used pink primer from Zero and got a terrible reaction once, so used Mr Color and their pink was fine. 1

Maybe the coat wasnt thick enough or the drying time wasnt long enough. Dont really know what happened - the paint itself is from gravity paints. 1
Simo5555 Posted August 2, 2024 Author Posted August 2, 2024 Clearcoated Might need another coat after wetsanding. We'll see 5
nickfzr61 Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 (edited) That looks really nice. I’m looking forward to seeing this one completed. Edited August 3, 2024 by nickfzr61 1
NOBLNG Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Beautiful looking car! And it looks like you’re doing it justice.?? Who made that kit…Fujimi? 1

Simo5555 Posted August 6, 2024 Author Posted August 6, 2024 Goddamn this kit is hard ? Parts are so tiny and brittle. I broke the gearbox rod twice already. Also getting the parts to line up is hard - theres a lot of fiddling and re-glueing. Dont even try it if you dont have the patience of a saint and a really good set of tweezers. You'll hate this hobby after that (just kidding ?) Did some work on the engine. Exhaust is there, but the paint looks off - i did try to mix some burnt iron with silver, but it didnt came out the way i had imagined. The engine itself is so horrible to build that i'm not going to re-do it. Looking back, i would've liked to do a heat burned stainless instead, but thats something for different build. Did some painting on the window trim too Looks a bit like a Ferrari already ? 5
dino246gt Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 Patience pays off and your 288GTO looks fantastic! 1
Bainford Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Despite the troubles, the build is coming along great. It's going to be one beautiful Ferrari. 1
mrm Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Coming along really nicely. Are you going to detail the engine? The dry sump and turbos plumbing on this car (and the F40) is just crazy. 1
Simo5555 Posted August 31, 2024 Author Posted August 31, 2024 Seriosly, why did i even start this... difficult AF ? 1

Codi Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 Hi Simo, if someone can't get excited over this car and especially that beautiful paint you put down, well.........they should seek help. I'm looking forward to the rest of your build! cheers, tim 1
