DJMar Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Oh man, that's awful. I'm sure it is frustrating. That's a Tamiya acrylic over primer? It looks like crazing. I've never seen anything like that before with an acrylic. Such a bummer.
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 This one seems to be fighting you. It doesn't look like crazing to me it looks like the paint dried before it hit the model. What are you thinning the Tamiya paint with? What thinner to paint ratio are you using? You might want to use more thinner. How close are you spraing to the model. That is the other possibility if it's too far back. I'd wet sand and try thinning the paint more.
slusher Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 I would get another kit and do it with all Tamiya . Is there a chance the crazing was from before?

I always use off the self lacquer thinner and never had any issues. I thin it 50/50. Distance from the model is fine. It's a head scratcher. 8 hours ago, slusher said: I would get another kit and do it with all Tamiya . Is there a chance the crazing was from before? This was all Tamiya products Carl. 1
Zippi Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 I went out in the garage this morning and started boxing everything up on the 55 and stopped for a second. I was thinking I have a new can of the Tamiya TS-14 Gloss Black so.....the hood is the easiest part to paint so I wet sanded it down with 600, 1000, 4000, and 12000. This time no primer and three coat of the TS-14. The spoons in the pic are from yesterday when I airbrushed the Tamiya X-1 Gloss black. The spoons turned out fine vs the body. This one has me confused.
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 I would suggest trying the Tamiya thinner with the Tamiya paint and keep the mix ratio and spray distance the same. I believe that the paint is drying before it hits the model. Do you have a junk body to test it out with? I think that the hot lacquer got through the Tamiya primer in the original case. 1

Zippi Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 Well fellows, I dug deep in that top hat and found another rabbit Miracles do happen I guess. It paid off this time to give it one more shot. I'm not even sure why I bought that can of Tamiya black paint at the hobby shop last week. I guess it was meant for this paint job. I've never had black come out this good before. 8
ksnow Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Wow, that came out nice. But man, you sure had to work for it.
SpikeSchumacher Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Hey, that looks great Bob! I really like the Tamiya cans. I have even decanted them for airbrushing with great results.
bobthehobbyguy Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Nice save. Glad you took another shot at it.

espo Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 TS-14 right out of the spray can is hard to beat. 1

mrm Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 It's good to see this one back in the race. I wouldn't thin any paint with off the shelf lacquer thinner by the way. I do buy it in bulk, but the only thing I ever use it for is cleaning my airbrush. Tamiya grey primer is my number one choice and what I use the most. 2K primer is second best choice, when I absolutely don't want to take any chances. As much as I love Tamiya product, I would never use their acrylic jars for spray painting a body. I use that stuff only for brush detailing. Your issue looks like some sort of cross contamination. I had a different issue, but equally disastrous involving silicone. I go to my local pharmacy and ask them for the plastic generic syringes, which is what I use for getting paint from my cans of automotive paint or for mixing 2K primers or 2K clear. This one time they gave me new syringes and I didn't pay attention that they had a very thin layer of silicone on their piston. That wrecked havoc with my 2K clear and it took me repainting the model three times to figure it out. It was a diecast model for a client and I took the messed up body to the shop that used to mix paint for me. The minute the guy there laid eyes on it, his reaction was "silicone contamination". Anyway, I am glad you figured it out now and you can continue on this killer build. 1

Acually I've been using off the shelf lacquer thinner to thin the Tamiya paints for some time now and it works nicely for me. I had contacted Tamiya some time back and ask about the dry time for their X-22 clear and why it took so long to dry. I was told by Tamiya that their team suggested off the shelf lacquer thinner. Sounds kinda strange but true. I like using the XF Military colors with clear over it as it gives a more true look of how cars looked back in the day. At any rate, I think I have the problem under control and punching forward. Thanks dude. 1
Duddly01 Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Third times the charm. I had a similar experience with painting a Corvette. I thought it was because it was molded in color, and it caused a reaction. After several tries it finally came out ok and I called it. Seems sometime with no rhyme or reason this sort of thing happens. ?♂️
