Came out to drop a bag in the can and was greeted by this little one.

Eastern newt. These guys grow to about 5-6 inches long and turn an olive green color

We used to find those all the time as kids. I lived by a huge tract of dense woods/swamp that fell to urban sprawl.

Turtles, frogs, snakes, toads.. we had them all in big numbers. It was dangerous to cut the lawn close to dark, I had hit large frogs and snakes.

I need to start a poison ivy removal business. I seem to be immune. If only I were younger...

I was immune as a kid. My mom was highly allergic to it. By me it us all over the place. You would do well with a business.

My property is 11 acres, mostly wooded, about a half mile away from a preserve on one side and a farm down the road,so I get all manor of wilderness and creatures stopping by. I enjoy it.

We have the Pacific Newt here in Oregon which is brown in color. Had them as pets when I was a kid and was very successful keeping them alive for years. Used to have them around our yard the last 20 years but slowly disappeared as many critters have. Sad.

I think with all the rain we've gotten recently critters like that guy are making more of an appearance.  I've been seeing a ton of toads, big ones, tree frogs and now that guy. He's living in the garden by my walkway,  I saw them again this morning. Urban sprawl, climate change and all that has pushed a lot of animals away. But my deer are still around, they need to start paying rent.

All the critters that are close to ground water levels like toads, frogs, snakes and turtles are impacted by water quality/pollution in an ecosystem. This is why they disappear first.

The last box turtle I saw was around 1996. I used to find shedded snake skins deep in my back yard. Around 1987 I saw baby brown snakes under the hosta plants. Now, none of those.

Even the rabbits have been thinned out drastically. I haven't had one for the past couple of years. I have seen their tracks in light snow.

I back up to an ocean causeway. I have seen deer that cross the bay bridges up by me. Raccoons are abundant. So are fox families. I have an odd possum crossing my yard now and then.

Saw this yesterday evening after the scattered showers moved through. It was a double for a while.

Looked out the kitchen window at breakfast and noticed two Deer walking through the back yard heading out over the golf course. Seem to be seeing a lot of roadkill lately in the area. Mostly Possums, but they may only be playing possum.

Those are known as Himalayan possums, on account of "him a layin" in the road, LOL.

A little before and after. The clematis survived another winter, but the rest was full of weeds.

I added 4 more Elijah Blue plants to go with the other 3.

I have a clematis that mom planted many moons ago that's still surviving. It towers 12 feet but has a lot of dead shoots that need to be removed. The only problem is that a lot of the new has attached themselves to those old dead shoots. I'm afraid of thinning it out and possibly killing it.

We've been seeing a whitetail doe hanging around the pond and the field to the North the last few days. Got a real good look at her last night, and her udder is quite full. Must have a little on or two in the woods nearby.

I had some weed vine I had to remove. The clematis vine is delicate and thin, dark too. It took a bit of work but I got it.

A number of years ago, when I was watering this same Tomato Garden, a bunch of Bunnies emerged from the dirt. I wonder if she was searching for another nest. Some pictures were shot through the patio screen door and no Sun.

Didn't get a picture but there were three vultures in the yard yesterday morning.

The lady across from us is 101 and she scared them off, said she isn't ready yet! LoL

The whitetail doe was back in the pond over the weekend, she is really liking those cattails apparently. Just waiting for her fawn to make an appearance, should be any day now.

The oriole feeder (jelly jar style) was knocked upside down this morning. Its the time of year that the young raccoons (ring-tailed trash pandas) start making a nuisance of themselves.

And lastly, the young bald eagles are out and soaring now, nice to see adult pairs with a young one.

I didn’t get a picture but I went out in the back yard to find a horse. We don’t own any horses. Guess one of the neighbors horses must have gotten out.

I saw a drip irrigation system that I built for my wife's raised garden bed.

Not a big deal but even though it was never on my bucket list, I can now take it off of it.20250619_181717.jpg.91ccdc22bec51df9cb5ea3c4858be27b.jpg20250619_181751.jpg.8c647fe3d8ad2602f9346fe75e6d78d1.jpg
