TonyK Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 The cat across the street has a little bell on his/her collar so I guess that might help alert the birds if he/she attempts an attack.

Neighbors dog across the street used the bathroom next to the flower bed looked like a snake it was so long. Scoop it up, put it a plastic bag and leave it with a note by their front door. Explain that their dog had forgot something in your yard. 2
Nosferatu Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I saw this hairy female tarantula. I'm sure she's very pretty to another male. 1 1

Nosferatu Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 Tarantulas are good spiders! They eat many other bugs. I never kill any. I don’t think they eat their mate, but the female Praying Mantis will behead their mate if he doesn’t get out of Dodge quickly! 1
NYLIBUD Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 (edited) I sort of live on a golf course.Sort of set back off any of the greens directly. We have to deal with a lot of geese, swans, other birds.Anyway,I was shooting a quick game with my 21 year old nephew.Of course there were tons of geese and swans all over the course today. All of a sudden my 21 yo nephew takes a shot, hits a goose right in the head, and instantly killed the stupid thing..Now i love animals, but im not a big fan of ANY birds, they just make a mess, they wake me up at the crack of dawn.We had a stupid woodpecker going at it for months. And now there’s some screeching owl that’s is doing its thing at 3AM.??.So im sorry, but all i can think about, was that just took talent,?wow,I mean i couldn’t believe my eyes..Now,Sorry if you like geese, but they are just dirty, nasty creatures.?,who think it’s ok to chase after humans if you get to close to them..No way,?Anyway, that’s what I saw in my yard today.??♂️ Edited August 23, 2024 by NYLIBUD 2 1

It is illegal for us to hit a goose with our vehicles, so we can't get rid of them that way, but what is apparently going to happen next spring is that some dudes are supposed to take a bunch of the eggs away so the population declines enough that we can walk with freedom in our parks

Sound better than a hole in one to me. I think this whole protected species thing with Canadian Geese is long overdue for review. We have much the same issue here in the greater KC Metro area on both sides of the state line. We downsized from our home of over twenty years a couple of years ago. We were on a body of water and these dirty birds were everywhere. They would come up into our yard and eat the grass into the dirt and leave their poo everywhere. All night long it was like a yard full of barking dogs on the water and in the yard. Bottle rockets and BB Guns didn't seem to deter them. One day someone mentioned laser pointers like you would use in a presentation in an office setting. What I found was I could lean out the back door around dusk and start trying to shine the pointer around in front of them on the water or in the yard. They would freakout and start squawking and I could herd them all the way across the lake. The other thing about these Geese is that they are a nasty to each other besides being really lazy. During the winter when the lake would try and freeze over only the Ducks movements in the water would keep an open spot and the Geese would then move in and try and take over the open water from the Ducks. In the twenty years we lived there I only saw two types of other birds that the Geese were intimidated by. The would move out of the way when the Swans would stop off when going north or south, and the Blue Herens. While the Herens are a shy bird and don't like to be around humans, they can be deadly to other critters that threaten them. 1
bobss396 Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 My brother was fishing, maybe around 1970 at a local pond and somehow snagged a swan.... he had to cut the line just to save himself.
slusher Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 A tree frog has been living behind the shutter fall summer and climbs the wall sits on the porch light and catches bugs. Then goes back to the shutter.. 5

bobss396 Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 I just put out food for the birds and a flock of mourning doves came in. I counted at least 12 of them. The bottom shot is bluejay feathers I picked up, they must groom themselves. I found a bunch of pin feathers as well. They should be molting soon... man do they look ugly for a while. 3
JollySipper Posted August 30, 2024 Posted August 30, 2024 We would have a better variety of birds around if it weren't for the Mocking Birds.......... They run everything else off! They take on much larger birds than themselves, I've seen them run away a Vulture even......... I wish they would leave the Crows alone, they bring me peace! 2

I have a few mockingbirds, they stay to the ground like the robins. They don't mix with the birds that eat the seed and peanuts I put out. My one neighbor had a nest of mockingbirds outside his bedroom window in a tree.... they made a racket all night long. He finally took the tree down.
slusher Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 I have all kids of birds I have to send you pictures of my hummingbirds having sord fights.. 3
bobss396 Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 My yard was a mess when I moved in almost 38 years ago. I had all sorts of weeds taller than me. Also Queen Ann's Lace wild flowers. I was out back and marveled at how big of a bee was hovering over them... 2nd look and it was a humming bird. I have a feeder set up now and then over the years, I refresh the nectar mix... but have not seen one since. My girlfriend has a large piece of property out east and north of me, she has a great supply of hummingbirds.

Mike C. Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 When I was a kid, they used to tell us to shoot them while out hunting because they killed all the game, nowadays it's probably illegal.
89AKurt Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 I went across my street to look at a sunset, and walked past a Mountain Lion.
