TECHMAN Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 A friend told me how he had been replicating "anodized" parts, tried it, and was VERY pleased, so thought that I'd pass it along to those who build models with anodized parts. TAMIYA has three different "clear" colors to use over either chrome parts or "chrome painted" parts: X23 is the CLEAR BLUE, X24 is the CLEAR YELLOW, and X27 is the CLEAR RED. A little "trial" usage, and your stuff will come out great!!!! Give it a try!!! DJ 1 2
jaymcminn Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 If you can get your hands on the new(ish) Tamiya LP clear lacquers they're even better, with more even coverage and a shorter drying time that allows for multiple coats for better depth of color. 1
peteski Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Tamiya also makes Clear Green and Clear Smoke, but not many anodized parts are finished in green or smoke (gray).
Straightliner59 Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 Anybody else remember when we had to find glass stain, for our anodized parts? ? I think it was looking for that, that "hipped" me to just how much useful stuff was in a craft store. "Wow! You mean it's not all dollhouses, floral arrangement stuff, and fabric?!" 1

Have used the X19 Smoke extensively since I was made aware that it existed to help detail stuff like grilles, carbs, m/c's, etc., it also "trims" stuff like rims to give them more "depth" and detail. Will look for the green, gotta be something a person can do with that!!! THANKS PETER

Will look for them, I prefer lacquers because of their drying times (as you pointed out) THANKS JAY

When I first "got back into the hobby", the wife and I spent hours wondering around in H/Lobby looking thru the different departments for things to "use" on the little cars..... Amazing how you can make realistic hoses out of 'rubber tubing' from the Jewelry dept., brake lines/ fuel lines, etc. from stuff in the floral dept. you took us "back in time" ? 1
Bugatti Fan Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 We have what I would guess to be a chain of multiple crafts stores named Hobbycraft here in the UK that looks to e a similar operation to the US group Hobby Lobby. For lateral thinking model makers it is an Aladdin's Cave of things that can be used for our hobby.

PETE Found a use for the green: Painted the gauges in a dashboard with the "chrome" paint first, then used the clear-green, looks like a lot of the dashboards when the dash lights are on!!!! And after talking with RON COON and asking how he came up with the finish on his newest carbs, I painted a carb with the chrome first, then the smoke tint, LOOKIN' GOOD!!!! DJ 1
