The body side detail on the Torino Cobra isn't quite as sharp as on the GT annual, but I remember when that reissue was announced.  I thought Ertl did a decent job with it.

Ertl restored the '65 GTO Modified Stocker in 1984, one of the first things they did that needed a lot of work.  And it did need a lot, that kit got reworked as much as any other in the series.  The GTO rebuild included a brand new interior bucket and chassis plate, neither of which came out as good as the original parts.  The body got reworked a lot as well, as did the bumpers (including the protruding headlamps that everyone complains about).

None of the other kits in that series could, or should, be restored to stock, much as I'd like to see a couple of them in stock form again.

Just before the Cobra reissue came out I was working on converting a Modified Stocker back to stock. Grafted the wheel openings from an MPC Mercury Cyclone onto the body, in hindsight a dumb idea as the MPC kit is rare these days. Then the Cobra came out and I abandoned the idea. Stock piled the Cobra kit at the time and still have a bunch of them.

The AMT is a Model King limited edition that’s why it’s so expensive.  But it shows the tools still exist so they could reissue this again. I think this is the old MPC kit.

Round 2 may have issued the '72 Torino once after that Model King issue.  That's the MPC kit, different from the Jo-Han one which was also sold in AMT packaging around 1973-74.

Man, Hobby Lobby has this kit, and starting tomorrow, all kits should be 40% off. I'm getting tempted.....

Dang It Carl, would did you have to start talking about this kit?

:)

For 1969 on the Nascar circuit, they called the long nosed car a Cobra while running the 427. Once the 429 was approved part way in the season, they used the Talladega name. Not sure on the previous years.

Not really, the aero version of the 1969 Torino was called Talladega regardless of engine, they had the 427 FE first but later got the 429 Boss, however the few street cars made had a 428 Cobra Jet.

Buddy, every once in a while I would look for the Johan kit get snipped every time. Been at it a while. No I have a 69 Torino but wouldn’t mind having a 71 -72 or the Johan Torino stocker..I have a Petty Talladega ki had since it went on clearance years ago..

I got one the other week. I know the model is crude by modern comparison, but I still love the 60s-70s MPC and AMT kits.

To my eye, Johan did a near perfect body for a stock 72 Gran Torino. Maybe Revell can be convinced to do this body to go with their Starsky and Hutch 75 Gran Torino. The chassis on both cars was the same. Then they could do a kit for the Clint Eastwood movie and one for the Fast and Furious movie.

I've looked at using the MPC kit to make a fast back out of the Revell kit but it would be a ton of work. The Revell kit is also a bit big, the MPC and Johan are exactly the same size but the Revell kit is a bit bigger somehow.

I wondered about that. I bought one of the Revell kits, but put it back into the box because the proportions looked off to me. It seems bigger and the way the side windows angle up seems a bit off.

I went to Hobby Lobby and many hole and I picked up a 53 Ford trophy kit.  Now after Christmas maybe they will get some new kits…

I'm hoping to see some new stuff there. I rarely shop there anymore because I've already bought the kits I want from there. I wonder if they would respond to a campaign to have them carry different brands? In the early 2000s they carried some Tamiya kits for a while.

I don’t understand why they stopped carrying Tamiya primer. I think Tamiya kits are to expensive for HL.   I that that Moebius has a good chance..

Here's a pic that shows the difference in the wheelbase. It all seems to be in the front fenders for some reason. The Revell body is also wider at the rocker panels so the frame won't fit in the Johan body at all.

I found one of these in a hobby shop last year for $40. It looks to me like the same kit as the Johan one.

I found my kit and it's the same one. Got it at Wild Bill's Hobbytown in Dallas last year for $39.99.

The difference in the rocker panels could be due to the Cobra having stock Fairlane/ Torino rocker panels and the panels on the Talladega s panels were re-worked, NASCAR specials. The rocker panels of the Talladega were re-rolled to allow it to sit lower than regular Fairlane bodies and still be legal.
