I made bezels for some Mercs I have done in the past, when I had lathe access at work.

I ran into some bigger K&S aluminum  tube the other day, 9/32". That could be used as liners, french the outer rims.

It's been to cold for painting (priming) so I have been addressing some other details.  I added the trim back in on the doors and rear quarters.  Also made some bullet taillights.

I've chopped a handful of Mercurys and it is not easy to get the top flowing from front to back, nor is it easy to get it even from left to right. You've done a fine job! On your next one, if you like you can keep a small center section (a 1/4 to 1/2in. will suffice) of the rear window attached to the top instead of cutting the rear window completely free. This small attached section can be a hinge that can be gently bent to rotate the window to lower it into place as the top moves forward and down to realign the A pillars. I also like how you angled the B pillars farther forward than where they normally line up after a chop! Looks way better in my eyes. Famed norcal customizer John Aiello did a similar thing on my 1:1 shoebox ford. He told me it was the same amount of work so why not! 😉image.png.c09a9c017b58e60e2c474ebc4f2b1f2a.png

Hi!  Just a quick update on the Mercury.  It's been slow going with all the cold weather.  But its in primer now.  I shouldn't have used this Rust-Oleum 2X, it takes stays tacky for weeks. It also shows there's still a ton of "fine tuning" body work to be done.  IMG_20250228_174756681.jpg.eb6932eea73a5275e8087ea9472cea00.jpgIMG_20250228_174901499.jpg.6f513dae0d07296d262ee7fbd82ae869.jpg

Just a quick update on the Mercury.  .  It has now found paint, Cranberry 2X.  The lettering on the hood wss foiled under the paint.  The medallion was hand painted.  I busted the rear glass so I will have to make one.  The engine, chassis, interior are completed.  The air cleaner has not yet been painted.  Whitewalls hand painted, wheels from parts box modified to fit. Trying to keep all the stock trim for an "unconventional custom look".  Still a lot of work to do!

The ole 49 Merc is really looking pretty sharp.  The lettering on the hood look really nice.

I love the Cranberry red. It will look fantastic with the whitewalls. Keep up the good work.

I've roughed in the C pillars.  In Gene's tutorial he converts it to a hardtop but shows the process for adding them back in.  Most customizers delete the locks and door handles but I'm leaning toward keeping them just to be different.  I may keep the stock grille too.  And the flathead.  I'm more concerned with thinking about what to do about the headlight bezels.  The ones in the kit are horrible.

The slanted C pillars look fantastic! Did you make new ones or did you modify originals?

Nice chop.  Not over chopped.  Good proportions.

For the Mercury letters on the hood, did you put the Bare Metal Foil over the primer then paint?  Then rub off the paint on the letters?

I've never done it this way before but am thinking of trying it.
