Why is it that Hasegawa is so hard to find here in the states? I've given up looking for the Mini Coopers; Classic, or 'current'.

I order direct from PlazaJapan.com …. great selection and even with shipping I am usually a bit better off than had I bought locally

It's not the relentless goofy nonsense of U.S. kit manufacturers where no two companies can agree which way to mount their wheels for a given 12 month period let alone over the long haul.

You are SO correct about this, James!

Not entirely sure! Hasegawa is a staple of my stocking across many genres - auto, air, and sci-fi. They hit a nice price point and their kits tend to be excellently detailed.

They're the same wheels. My LHS at one point had 27 sets of them for whatever reason. I haven't checked back recently to see how well they sold. The Cragers and the 5 slots both came from a series of "Hot Rod" kits that were done about 30 years ago and while the wheels have been reissued repeatedly I'm not sure the actual raked suspension has been included since then.

These wheels seem to be from a different mold than the old Otaki/Doyousha rims. I will be looking for a few more sets for the stash.

Hasegawa was easier to find in the past because they had a long standing bi-lateral (aka it went both ways) import agreement with Revell. If you know you period Japanese kits you'll know there were a variety of co-branded Monogram/Hasegawa or Revell/Hasegawa kits in the 80s and 90s it went back so far. But with the implosion of Hobbico in 2018 Hasegawa lost it's U.S. importer. Hasegawa & RevellAG maintained their relationship through the bankruptcy and new ownership, but I don't know if Hasegawa's distribution was ever specifically resurrected through Revell-Carerra of the Americas or if they created their own network through established wholesalers.

Like Justin said the kits are available, but you need a knowledgeable, and dare I say willing, shop to stock them.

Just FYI - I'm pretty sure I'm one of the very few that is waiting for the release of the Starlet SE, but PlazaJapan has an expected date of 27 June on their website.

Why, I believe you are correct.

You are One of the Few.

The 1991 car (top) was also done by Tamiya and Aoshima's body choice directly mimics that kit's box art. I don't believe anyone has directly replicated the "1st Gen" ('88/'89/'90) 180SX before.

The top car is actually the early version (zenki) and the bottom car is the mid version (chuki).

Tamiya and Fujimi both did the zenki.  Fujimi then cut out the front bumper of the mold and tooled up a very ugly bumper half for the chuki.  A zenki bumper half was added back later and you can still get the zenki/chuki 2 in 1 kit from Fujimi with the expensive variable chassis today.

A much better 3D printed chuki bumper can be found on Yahoo Japan auctions from time to time, along with various bodykits.  They would not work on the Aoshima body as the Fujimi body is considerably wider.

I am surprised Aoshima did not tool up the optional OEM side skirts for the chuki.  Maybe it will come out as a special edition down the road.
