David G. Posted August 3 Author Posted August 3 Hello Everybody! It's been a few weeks since I did anything with the Golden Hind and I've hit that point where I either need to do something with it or pack it up. I decided to work on some detail painting. I want to come up with a couple more shades of brown & tan for the deck details. I also applied the first wash on the name plaque. I just may finish this one in spite of myself! As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to share any comments you may have. David G. 2
Anglia105E Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Hi David . . . I think detail painting was probably a good idea, partly to lift your own spirits, and also to bring out some interesting aspects of the ship model. I am guessing that you would like to get this one out of the way and off the workbench pretty soon ! Any thoughts on what you might bring to the table for your next project ? David W.
stavanzer Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Looks Better Than It Should. You have the 'touch' to turn these Pig's Ears into Silk Purses.

Yes, those were my thoughts almost exactly, sort of like a friendly reacquaintance with a troublesome person. Maybe we'll get things worked out this time. Actually, I have been considering options for my next build. I've found myself standing in front of my stash closet searching for the perfect combination of fun, easy and challenging. The perfect combination of which probably doesn't exist. But I do tend to make even the easiest of builds more challenging which is usually where I find my fun. =D- 10 hours ago, meechum68 said: That's really coming together! Thanks for the update! David W. Thanks, I do try to keep it under control. I once figured that at my current rate of building, I would have to live to be about 106 years old to build them all. It's literally a life-time supply. =D-
mustang1989 Posted August 5 Posted August 5 (edited) You're coming along well on this one so far Dave. Whatever you do.....don't pack 'er up man as this has been a fun build to follow. In regard to the wooden deck, have you seen the Army Painter Dark Wood Speedpaint? It's color and wash all in the same application and brings out a realistic wooden finish. Here's a wooden deck that one of the members on my forum used this paint on. Edited August 5 by mustang1989 1

That does look cool, thanks for the pointer. Though I don't plan to make mine look quite that well detailed. =D- 1

You're doing a magnificent job on this ship so far Dave.
David G. Posted August 16 Author Posted August 16 Hello Everybody! I do plan to finish this one. It's not particularly difficult just more of a slog than anything else. To try to replicate the blue and gold of the rosettes on the gallery area I decided to start with some gold BMF. I brushed on a coat of turquoise enamel paint, let it dry for a few hours then cleaned off the frames and rosettes. It'll need a little more effort but I think I can make it work. I made a first pass at throwing some color at the decks. I expressed some of the Tamiya TS-33 Dull Red from the can and brushed it on along with some XF-68 NATO Brown and XF-52 Flat Earth. The second pass at the deck detail got things cleaned up a little but there's still more to do. As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post any comments you may have. Anglia105E Posted August 20 Posted August 20 I think the gold and the turquoise has worked quite well David . . . You are almost there, so the end is in sight . . . Soldier on . . . David W.
David G. Posted August 20 Author Posted August 20 Thank you David. I was really surprised to discover how colorful and opulent looking many of these ships actually were. Thinking about it, it makes sense though. These vessels were functional emissaries of the Empire and often the first representation of the Crown that people of other countries would see. England had a reputation to uphold. I've learned so much about so many different topics through "playing with these plastic toys" as some would see it. David G. 1
David G. Posted Saturday at 01:08 PM Author Posted Saturday at 01:08 PM Hello Everybody! It's taken me about twelve hours spaced over a number of build sessions but the detail painting is done! Oh yeah, I finished the name plaque too. I still have a little more painting to do on the sails but the hull is finished. Using pastels I also did a little light weathering on the decks but they're finished too. Except for the deck cannons. There are eight cannon for the deck, each about 7mm long. I'll mount these right before I start on the rigging. As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post any comments you may have. David G. 1

David G. Posted 12 hours ago Author Posted 12 hours ago Hello Everybody! I painted the crown on the lion and the lines on the sails. The lines are a little too dark for me so I'll probably lighten them up during the cleanup. This of course calls for a celebratory test-fit! I've lightened the ropes a bit too. As always, thanks for taking the time to look and please feel free to post any comments. David G.
stavanzer Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago The Lines are not too dark. Tar was used on many lines & ropes on a ship.
