Hey all <img src="http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

I had collected parts for this build about 4 years ago, and have been dying to get this out and get it started.

This is one of my all time favorite cars from the early 50's.

This is an exquisit Danbury Mint die-cast that just oozes with clever little details all over it, and was extremely well made.

It was somewhat painful to tear it apart, but I think worth it in the long run.

A lot of the chrome trim will remain, but will have a custom interior, nice new paint, and a great set of wheels/tires.

This will be fun.

I'd love to own one of these <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> .

I have another project in front of this, that I need to finish, but have several weeks before I start on finishing it, so we'll see how far I get on this one, and if the sun stays out like they say it might - well, you guys may not hear from me 'till fall <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> .

Probably won't post much on it.

As you can see in the pic's, it's been dis-assembled, and the front area where the bumper brackets go through the body, the "HALO" around those openings have been ground away and filled in with EVERCOAT RAGE, a polyester body filler, used by "Real" body men on real steel bodies.

IMAGINE THAT ??? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> . The red filler is BONDO Glazing Putty.

Well, now I'm confused.

The photo-etch script on the body say's "Champion", so maybe I need to do some more research.

Thanks Clay - dave B)

Hey, Dave...now that Chrysler owns what is left of Studebaker, (through their previous acquisition of American Motors), I'd give it a Viper look and feel. Make a removable rear deck to cover the back seats, add a custom, two-tone paint job with some bright pinstripes, a cool, custom leather interior and there you go!! :D

No, wait...these are pictures of the Stude that I bought already built this way from DM!! :D:D

Sorry...I couldn't help myself... :P

It could be Commander or a Champion and still be a Starlight. The designations Starlight and Starliner were for body styles not model lines. I'm not sure what designation a convertible would have had in 1950. In the case of the '53 (a very popular kit), Starlight meant the 2 door "post" and Starliner meant the "hardtop" (no post) and, yes, they could have been either Champions or Commanders. In '53, Champions had six-cylinders and Commanders had V-8's. In 1950 Studebaker didn't offer a V-8 yet so I'm not really sure how to tell them apart.

Painting a custom die cast can be challanging, especially when you paint it totally assembled, as I do most everything now.

There is just usually more things you need to paint and if you miss one ...well - you got trouble <img src="http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> .

With all the opening features, you need to spray all the jams first and then let them dry long enough that when you close them to paint the whole car, parts don't stay stuck <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="B)" border="0" alt="angry.gif" /> .

The color is DupliColor Cherry red Pearl Metallic.

I was surprised - it came out flawless and even looks nice on the car - even bare <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> .

It'll sit a little lower, as this isn't a "DONK MACHINE" this time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> .

I know that this is your build and you should do it the way you want to, but please lower it alot more.

I vote with Clay .. big wheels are one thing, but clearance for tree stumps is another! :D

I love those 50 Studes .. AMT was supposed to actually release one some years ago.. how unfortunate it got canceled. B)

Just as a side note, a friend of my daughter's just bought a 57 Studebaker President in great shape and original condition. A 289ci V8 and a good paint job. I was floored to see a 29 year old kid purchase it! Cars are safe with the next generation I'm happy to say!

Well guy's, for me, it just doesn't get any better than this <img src="http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="cool.gif" /> .

I'll say it again, I LOVE this Ol' body style.

This color and paint came out way better than I figured it would, and I'm extatic - sorry, just me lovin' this hobby <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> .

The wheels and stance look good to me.

I painted it yesterday, and today it's all polished and waxed in less than 12 hours.

Now I get to add the chrome and do a "scratched" leather interior with four buckets - FUN <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> .

Thanks guy's <img src="http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Here she is with a little chrome and a "Buncha Attitude" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> .

Once in a great while for me, a build comes along that just "Flips All My Switches".

I have no idea why this has turned out to be such fun.

Maybe everything seems to be just right and going so good.

My reaction to this has really surprised me, but I will definately continue to enjoy it.
