Fisher61 Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 (edited) It's been years since I've built the old tool AMT '57 Chevy, so I thought I would try one now since my skills have improved over the years, This one is painted with Duplicolor silver and polished out. I've ordered a Model Car Garage PE detail kit for it since I don't really like the decal for the quarter panel trim. Interior will be red and black. Thanks for looking, questions and comments welcome! Edited January 5, 2010 by plumber
MrObsessive Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Gonna be a nice one Bill! For some reason, I still like this one better than the "new tool" '57. It just looks truer to scale to me........... One can never have too many '57 Chevy's!

It just looks truer to scale to me........... One can never have too many '57 Chevy's! Thanks Bill! The great AMT '57 debate lives on! I used to prefer the new tool over old, but now I,m not so sure! There is just something about the old "Trophy kit" that just looks right. One thing I didn't like about the newer tool '57 is the too thick side trim and the elongated shape of the front wheel opening.
MrObsessive Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 One thing I didn't like about the newer tool '57 is the too thick side trim and the elongated shape of the front wheel opening. If you check 1:1 photos against that newer tool '57 Bill, you'll see that the rears are also too elongated. The wheelwells flare back too far not showing enough of the horizontal part of the quarter leading back to the bumper.
kustoms Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 (edited) Looks great Bill I always liked the AMT 57 better too. however the side trim is wrong right behind the doors ie picture I posted .... it drops off too suddenly before the flaired insert it should gradualy drop into the rear starting in the middle of the door... One could sand off the trim and make it from scratch out of evergreen strip but thats alot of work.. Your photo etch kit will make up for it Id leave it as is Its not that big a deal keep goin on this one your doing a great job! Bud Ellis Kustoms Edited November 24, 2009 by kustoms

The trim issue was one of my gripes with this kit, along with the emblem in the grill bar thats a tad to big. Other than that, this is a well proportion body.
oldscool Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I like that old kit too and your paint looks great. I remember making a mess of one when I was a teenager trying to chop the top using the part that came in the kit which required you to cut the top into four sections. oldscool
styromaniac Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) " One can never have too many '57 Chevy's! " Bill Geary I agree. I have a couple of the "classic" AMT '57s...a couple of the "new tools" (including the ProShop w/ the photo etch)..and just recently obtained the vintage Revell "Tri-Fives"..the '55, the'56 and the '57 along with a vintage Revell '57 Nomad..all in their original box art..which I loved looking at as a kid. Something about the '57 just resonates deep...its a "must have". Might even get around to building a couple of them. :-) Edited November 25, 2009 by styromaniac
charlie8575 Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I don't see these in silver too much. I usually don't care for silver too much, but this looks good in it. I have a couple of the old-tool '57s and one or two new-tools. I think both kits have their advantages. I love the detail of the new tool, but the ease of assembly in the old one has a lot going for it, too, and both look good when they're done. I also have all four of the Revell Tri-5s, c. 1980 issue. Someday, I'll actually have the stones enough to put them together, too. They are daunting, although I've seen some assembled, and once done, they look good. Charlie Larkin
rustybill1960 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 i have all three of the revell 5's and a few of the amt 57's well, i like the look of the amt 57 but, the detail of the revell kits kinda makes it a moot point nice looking paint dude want to see the rest of the build thanks for sharing man later russell
Fisher61 Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 I have the interior all painted and foiled, used a black wash on the cloth parts of the seat and door panels as the the 1:1 had a "cloud pattern" type of cloth that showed some red through the black, foiled all the interior trim. Also finished chassis painting, red oxide primer with over spray and semi gloss black frame rails, exhaust painted steel. Thanks for looking!
Fisher61 Posted December 9, 2009 Author Posted December 9, 2009 Finished the foiling, painted the inner fenders semi gloss black. I still have to paint the headliner then I'll be ready for the photo etch. Thanks for looking!
charlie8575 Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 Looks great. I really do like how you did the interior, and it gives me some ideas how to do mine, too. Thanks for the tip. Are you going to do it as a Bel Air or 210? Charlie Larkin

Are you going to do it as a Bel Air or 210? Charlie Larkin I'm doing a Belair. I purchased a Model Car Garage photo etched detail set, it has the "wedge" piece of trim for a Belair, rather than using the kit provided decal. http://www.modelcargarage.com/store/pc/vie...uct=182#details
Greg Cullinan Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Bill this is going to be one sweet 57. Everything looks real clean.Nice work. Thanks
Fisher61 Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 Finished adding the photo etch to the body today, first time I've used it! This was more nerve racking than foiling, but the results are worth it. Thanks for looking!
Marc @ MPC Motorsports Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 That '57 looks freakin' awesome. The photoetch is just what the Doctor ordered. Marc
george 53 Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Oh Man Bill, THAT'S lookin GREAT!!! That PE sure does the trick! This is gonna be one SHARP ride!!!
charlie8575 Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 That's coming along very nicely. Definitely something you can be proud of. Charlie Larkin
Rider Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Stunning build, the interior is awesome. You've done a super job on the interior, my family had one a few years back with the same interior and you've mached it quit well. Bravo.
Fisher61 Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 Thanks for the comments guys! If the crossed flags on the front fenders didn't give it away, this one is going to have fuel injection. I'll be using the left over unit from the Revell Black Widow kit back when I built my silver and white 150.
seeker589 Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I really like the silver. So hard to get right. It looks fantastic!
Fisher61 Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Finished engine and chassis for the most part. I used the fuel injection setup from the Revell Black Widow kit on the AMT kit engine. Added ignition wires, heater hoses. Also made a generator bracket from styrene strip so it didn't look like it is just floating in mid-air! Thanks for looking!
