By the way the prices of the originals have gone down quite a bit, built ups around $20-$30 range, and the unbuilts around $65-$85 dollar range, unless the seller is greedy!

Was the yellow one in the picture ever in it (the TV show) I never watched it, and I've NEVER seen that stripe set-up on ANY Road Runner. Was in a different option than the Strobe stripe?smile.gif

That was a custom strip job made to fool people that didn't know to much about cars back then, thats NOT even a 73-74 style stripe, just painted to look like one, personally I thought the 71 AND 72 Satelite's on the dukes series looked cool, aside from the wagon wheels?what were they thinking, and yes they used 71 AND 72's before they got the Jeep provided by AMC,It was in the closing credets later on in the series!

Well, "roadrunner" is an actual name for a species of bird. I don't see how WB could copyright THAT!

They didn't copyright "roadrunner"...

They copyrighted "Road Runner."

:P

yes there were both '71's and '72's and it said some cars Provided by AMC,but that ran from the first episode to the last, also the first jeep was a '80 golden eagle. and the whole stripe thing is correct that's why there's no bird.

yes but if you ever watched the show it wasn't ever shown. I was getting at in the TV series when the '74 was used it wasn't ever shown.

The point is that there is three colors of stripes and 4 pie tins so you can build Road Runners that were not on the Dukes. That bird cartoon is free advertising as far as I am concerned. Besides, I would hesitate calling that "intellectual" property. Monogram and their "71 Satellite", AMT and the "68 Plymouth" and all sorts of Superbirds missing the decals makes me mad when I think of all the car shows I go to where guys put plush Wile E Coyotes in the back seat among other WB trademarked schmotz.

i've got all the seasons on DVD and watch it still on TV. yep they did or they would paint them black or duct tape over them some times.

OK ,, Soooo,,, what about the white and red stripes ? I understand about the black ones ,, too bad for anyone who would want to do a replica stock "non Dukes" car with a black stripe but Oh Well. :P

But why didn't they put the bird on the red and white ones?

Yea, I have a set of stripes from Keith.

And about the kitbashing with the Charger ,, some of us like to add more detail to basic kits this way. Some of us like to just build them up box stock with no extra detail and there's some of us who like to detail out what comes in the kit. No right or wrongs as long as they're getting built,, right?

Steve if you think about it why put the bird on just 2 of the 3? when you can just not put it on any of them.

Round 2 hasn't included more optional parts from the original issue, have they? There were some optional parts in the '80s issue (the one molded in orange that said 'GTX' on the box...a front air dam and Superbird rear wing, IIRC. The box art I've seen for the original '74 showed parts for a Baja racer version.

IIRC, my '80s issue has the Road Runner scripts and birdies molded on the body, but the reissue from around 2004 doesn't have them.

The '73-74 Road Runners and Chargers are the only original MPC Road Runners and Chargers of that era I don't have..I have the the original '71 GTX kit (some of my favorite box art ever), the '71 and '72 Road Runners, and the '71 and '72 Chargers.

Yeah, that's what I was thinkin. They don't OWN the name Roadrunner, but I guess they DO own the little cartoon picture. I mean, it WAS their artists that created the cartoon AND the little bird character. Didn't the air cleaner or air grabber set-up on Road Runners have a decal that read "Cyote Duster" of something like that on it? Is THAT on the decal sheet? If they can't put the lil bird, i doubt they could put a likeness of Wiley on it either!huh.gifsmile.gif

Recently found a very restorable built up '73 with an original box for thirteen bucks

Also have a few of the recent reissues- debating getting the new one mainly for the decals (and add the birds separately) and can always use more '72-up Rallye wheels

Looks like you'd have to scrounge up a set of Magnum wheels in order to build a Dukes version, so the kit isn't 100 percent accurate in that regard, either.

I like the kit. Picked one up the other day. Very typical for its era. The missing birds aren't a deal-breaker for me. What I'd like to see is some decal producer do a sheet with just the birds on it, allowing the builder to add them to the stripes on the kit decal sheet.

Is there a non-Roadrunner version of the car that the stripes would be appropriate on? Would that require a flat hood?

I like the design of the car & have the RC2 version, plus a nasty old glue bomb original. I'm not necessarily demanding an exact replica, since it would never be built for anything like an IPMS contest...it more likely would end up looking close to stock or slightly "pro touring". Not sure getting another reissue is really necessary for me, I might be better off just getting the KM decals & use the dash/chassis from the glue bomb.

If you're only looking at building one car with stripes a set of KM decals is probably the way to go

I've got a few of these to build (and was also looking at the flat hoods to build a Satellite Sebring or two)

The stripes were a 'Runner only item (except for the unique ones used on the "spring special" Sundance Sebrings)

Bug Kevin at Missing Link,I made up a correct flat hood, with the bodyline down the center, and the correct amount of vents on both sides of the hood,I used the brochere to make sure it was correct..................Steve

It's in the stripe right behind the windows.

Correct. It is also on the panel ahead of the hood,in the center of the "outline circle" decal, and on the trunk (IIRC) on the far right edge. My factory ordered 1.1 scale '74 RR had them in those four locations. TIM

Bob, by '74 Ma Mopar had greatly restricted option availability vs. prior years. So to asnwer your quesiont, no there was not a factory built '74 wearing those stripes that was not a RR, stated another way, you could only get those stripes on a RR.

There was a special mid-year Satellite model, "Sundancer" IIRC, that had a gold stripe that was similar in terms of the overall geography it covered, but the stripe itself was much different graphically.

Best...TIM

Really not much to see- the chassis and dash have been changed back to the same one as the original issue- same basic stuff as any MPC Road Runner going back to 1971

5 small sprues including stock parts, a crude 4 barrel or six pack induction system, custom seats, steering wheel, and a roll bar, a big front and the superbird rear spoiler, a small rear spoiler.

Probably about 50 parts total not counting the chrome

Chassis is 70s MPC- plastic pins for the front wheels, metal axle for the rear with a separate axle and leaf spring piece to glue on top- front suspension, torsion bars, driveshaft, and exhaust all molded in. Red taillights, wheels include a set of chrome centerlines and a set of '72-up Rallye wheels. 4 small skinny Polyglas tires and two wide "Blue streaks"

Ok, I see Nick. And actually ,, I did watch the show all the time when it was originally on ,,I was in my teens then. I tried to watch it a couple years ago when the country music channel was showing it but I couldn't for the life of me sit through a whole episode. :(

Are you trying to tell us that once you got old enough to appreciate Daisy Duke that all of the blood left your brain, & you passed out? ;)

I f you think that using the li'l bird decal on the model would be free advertisement could you please sell that idea to Goodyear,NASCAR,General Motors, etc.?

I think you're right, but that isn't the way the ol' dollar deflates.
