cruz Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Good to hear you enforcing some rules around here Gregg, it was getting a little "dramatic" around here!!!!
Jon Cole Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 THANK YOU! I was getting concerned that we were going to lose this board to childish behavior. Looks like the 'reset' button has been pushed. It should have never gone this far. Here is to a better future!
Sixties Sam Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Gregg, I applaud your desire to end the grade school playground fights that have occurred here, but i think you're skating on thin ice regarding the principle of freedom of speech. People DO have some rights, and some amount of leeway must be given to them, even if we find them to be somewhat offensive sometimes. It's a fine line to walk. I don't envy your job here! Thanks, Sam

Thanks, Sam It would be kinda funny if folks start getting banned for typing....#@$^$%&... $%&%^*... ^&(%^*.....Uh oh, Wait, did I just cuss by typing this example?..........LOL. My oh my, how I like to walk the thin line.... Edited January 13, 2010 by J. Sauber

Thanks, Sam The rules in place here were agreed to by everyone when they signed on. Becoming a member here includes the provision that you agree to abide by the rules in place. Everyone here joined voluntarily, so you shouldn't complain about the rules now, since you agreed to abide by them when you joined. If you think your "freedoms" are being compromised here, there are plenty of other places you could sign on to.
george 53 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Sam, I don't think that freedom of speech IS an issue here. I THINK that the ability to defame others that one doesn't EVEN KNOW is what's been eliminated. It IS Greggs OWN forum, to direct as HE sees fit. If in his own wisdom he choses to eliminate those who would detract from his initial concept of his own forum, then one can either respect his wishes or simply leave. NO freedoms are being trampled on. Except that of being able to defame an individual WITHOUT proof. There must come a time when one choses on his own, to comply with the rules, which are set in place for EVERYONE, or to leave the system for their own perogitives. If someone choses to leave, then that's their choice. Those that chose to comply have made their own choice also. As I stated NO freedoms are being trampled on. You either learn to get along,or just hit the road! It's a VERY simple open and closed option.
Janne Herajärvi Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Thank you Gregg! This is my fafourite forum in other language than Finnish, just becouse here is so much great stuff, information and some nice friendly members. It is sad that some people cant live with out fighting and they do it everywhere outside and internet. I hate that kind people and in my opinion they dont belong here. I really like be here and new changes are great. Forum looks great now and it is fast like duracel rabbit Seriously this is great place to share hobby in international level. I really like to tell much things of my projects here but my english needs little practice before that. One thing what is differend here other than language is that: Finnish car model forum has 811 members right now and there is 15 moderators + 1 boss of course. Then in here MCM forum is 5146 members but only 2 moderators and 1 boss. Am i right, that is maybe problem here. Ill hope that those truoblemakers get lost and let us build nice models and share them here. Happy 2010 modelling year for anyone here
CAL Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 can you make a list of what is considered swear words and prohibited name calling? TIA
Jon Cole Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I am usually on this board several times a day, yet that is not true for other members. For those who frequent the board less often, I hope this thread stays at or near the top of the list. Perhaps it can be placed with the other messages always at the top of the page? Is it OK to "bump" the thread up when needed? Harry or Gregg, can you chime in on this? Thanks. BTW, prayers to the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

TIA That's a risky question you have there........If it's all spelled out in concrete, there's certainly going to be some folks up in arms about whats offensive and what is not...Definitely a loaded question in a sense. Besides, with the filters in place, all the typical four letter words are blocked anyways...It would be a bit annoying however if every imaginable controversial word was sensored and your posts ended up looking like this: Can you imagine reading this ####### and trying to sort through all this #########, and how ###########, and a real ###### in the ##### it would be to have all this ##### completely, and utterly,########### sensored? in any ########### and all############.......lol. But yeah, in all seriousness, I understand what your asking, Chris. Edited January 13, 2010 by J. Sauber
crazyjim Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I previously replied to this post in favorable terms. But then Harry posted about following the rules of this forum and I don't have a problem that either. But one of the rules is to have your real name in your posts. So when will that rule be enforced?

I have never seen that rule really enforced....Believe it or not, there are some folks here who have real big problems with that rule. They fight it tooth and nail, yet they are still here posting away, and running about the place unrestricted and unbanned like a pack of rats around the dumpsters. If the rules are really going to be tightened up firmly, then it's likely neccesary to get more heavy-fisted moderators and to basically add more police officers to the force.... It's sort of a double edged sword.... If you want tough rules and restrcitions enforced to the max, then it's enevitable that your going to lose some freedom to manuever around as smoothly, and some folks are going to get in an uproar....It's tough to have your cake just right, and eat it at the same time. That's exactly the problem. Run this place too strictly and you turn off a lot of people. Too loose and you also turn off a lot of people! A classic "no win" situation if there ever was one. Can't we just rely on COMMON SENSE here???? You all do remember what that is, don't you? I mean, come on! I'm pretty sure we all know what the "swear words" are... do we really need an itemized list? And I think we can all figure out on our own what "name calling" is. And as far as names in your posts... there's no way to enforce that other than by banning people who won't cooperate. I've sent many PMs to people, and most of them have added their names, but there are still some who just flat-out refuse... and I have no idea why. That lame excuse about "identity theft" is bogus, as I've explained here about a bazillion times. As far as banning the offenders, that's Gregg's call.

It is, it's (overly policing) been the demise of some really good places. Common sense works well if everyone has some.

I agree Harry.....It's a very difficult situation to balance........ Boy, I sure don't envy your position as a moderator here, and being stuck in the middle of both sides of the fence. I think your doing all you can do as a decent moderator who doesn't want to have to start drawing out your service weapon and really going to town on the bad guys, and ruling with an iron fist.......It's a tough call and I wish you all the best.
Harold Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 You mean no more whining, stupidity (wait, that's me ), cussing or vitriol? Cool.
crazyjim Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I'm proud of name and it's right there on every one of my posts. You have a thankless job Harry. I don't envy you, but I'm glad you're there doing what needs to be done. Thank you.

"Male reproductive organ" "fecal matter" and "kitty cat" come up a lot, but my all time favorite is "knuckle-dragging mouth-breather"... it becomes quite comical when someone goes on a binge & starts swear-typing.... Oooh, I vote we have that here!

CAL Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 maybe some cute little fluffy bunnies to bracket those.

Nick Winter Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Gregg you just answered my prayers, I'm tired of people bad mouthing me and other nice folks here, I almost did the unthickable and left and went to another forum. Thank you Gregg.
RodBurNeR Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I have a swear filter on DPMCC and it's pretty funny. example only " I am pretty tired of this boinking whining and worrying about cussing. What the THIS...IS.....SPARTA!!!!!! ? We are here to build models and all we can focus on for the majority are threads to either breath fire or to put it out. I think banning all of the private eye heads is the best way to stop this cross between a bulldog and a shitsu . " Think of the possibilities...can let people say what they want and actually get smiles instead of frowns.
disabled modeler Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I don't always get the spelling or punctuation right...But for me I could do without other picking or trying to down talk others that are just trying to be a constructive member here. Accusations from others just to stir up things aren't good for anyone. No one is perfect or right all the time I'm surely not. We all can get along together merely by trying. We are all here because we love to build.
