wgflatliner Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 my first model as a birthday gift: yeah it was pretty bad. the paint was so thick it never dried even after a month lol..
Railfreak78 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 My first model I Painted , Was the Bill Elliot Ford T-bird coors Stock car. Man i Wan to build that model again. This one? Or the older red one one?
Casey429 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I got introduced to models when my grandmafound what remained of my dad's old big rigs from the '70s. I think I was 3 or 4 at the time. Among that stash was an AMT '73 Ford pickup. My dad cleaned them up andI still have them. I remember him swapping in a Cummins from a newer Peterbilt into the 1st issue of the Pete wrecker and installing a 5th wheel. Ironically, I put the Detroit from the wrecker into my own version of the newer Pete that the Cummins was taken from about 2 years ago. The first kit I did myself was the 1/32 Bigfoot Snap Tite from the mid '90s. I still have it, but I treated it to some detail painting last year. My first glue kit was the much unloved MPC General Lee. No paint, but for some reason I did paint the exhaust manifolds and the grille inserts black. I still have that too, but ruined it by hogging out the wheel wells with a woodburner, painting it green and turning it into a dirt track hero.
Tijuanataxi Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Well, I started out building WWII airplane models, That is almost 40 years ago. I dont remember the first plane, but my first car model came in 1976, and it was this one: Here is the actual model I have a couple of unbuilt ones now, and one of them, are going to be build box stock, as a tribute to my very first car model. Christian (Junkman) wrote: "You know what we all should do? We should take the first (car?) kit we ever built, and build it exactly how we inteded it to look back then - but with the skills we have today. Now THIS would be a funny community buildoff, nay? " Yes, that IS a great idea.....I´m in...
Terry Sumner Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I'm with Harry on this one...can't recall which was the first! But my first models were airplanes in 1961 or 1962...somwhere around there. I think I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I can remember Christmas that year that I first got bitten by the bug...my parents, aka Santa Claus, got me 19 model airplanes. And by the end of that Christmas vacation I had them all built and most of them hanging from strings in the ceiling over my bed! LOL I recall some of them included a B-58, a Wildcat, a Hellcat and a Ford Tri-motor. The car model bug hit me a little later...probably when I was in the 7th grade around '64 - '65. The 32 Ford Vicky was one of my favorites as were many of the 3 in 1 kits of that time. And slot cars came in a few years later. Nostalgia is great but can be a tad costly. I now have a few of those original 32 Vicky kits courtesy of eBay...ouch$$$$$ Cost a lot more than $1.50 I'll tell ya!
Ken Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Mine was a Boeing Stratotanker kit from AMT. Built with my dad's help in the painting and destroyed by my brother on a 'test flight' down the stairs. First car model that I remember was an IMC GT40. I keep trying to win one on the auction sites, buy they always end at more than I want to pay. I do have the monogram SSP issue, but it is not the same.
sjordan2 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Gowland & Gowland Highway Pioneers kits – Model T and Stutz Bearcat. These were joint projects with my Dad helping me along, and I cherish these memories.
hemithunder Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 (edited) You know what we all should do? We should take the first (car?) kit we ever built, and build it exactly how we inteded it to look back then - but with the skills we have today. Now THIS would be a funny community buildoff, nay? I agree. I've been trying to pick up Johan Superbird. I don't have a LHS that carries car models and on E-bay I always seem to come up a day late and a dollar short. And if one comes up for trade I don't have any older kits that the trader wants. But I can still plan. Edited March 30, 2010 by hemithunder
Scalper Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 This one? Or the older red one one? The red Monogram one. The blue one my LHS has 2 of them.
torinobradley Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I must have been around 5 when my dad got a Jaguar XK-E that we started to build. I remember the rear door opened or was a separate piece and have never been able to find the same kit. Anyone know? I know my enthusiasm pretty much botched the job but it lead me on a great journey of models getting less and less botched as they went along...
RatRod Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Mine was at age 7, it was the Roger Lindamood Color Me Gone Charger, my dad cut & trimmed all the pieces with his pocket knife while I glued everything together (with lots of glue!!!) Ahhh, the memories....
Nick Notarangelo Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Lets see I had Monograms Snap 57 chevy in blue and silver/grey plastic when I was 5 in 77 i want another one
Guest Mustang3.8 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 My first model was a 1\32 scale '69 Camaro molded in yellow with black stripes. This kit had 2 piece plastic tires. I still have it somewhere.
LOBBS Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Here's mine... I got it for my 5th or 6th birthday and it marked the start of a lifelong love of Corvettes.
paul alflen Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 (edited) My first model kit was the 1/32 scale porsche,by Monogram. It was a slot car body with a non-detailed chassis in the kit box. I built it at Harrisville State Park in northern Michigan when I was on vacation at age five. The first 1/25 kit was AMT's 1967 Ford Galaxie convertable called,"Hemi Henry ". I brushed painted it with testors dark blue. I paid 2.08 for it from Lighthouse Drugstore. Those were the good old days. It was the first kit that my dad helped me work on. Every time I see that model box at a model car show, good memories come flooding back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited March 31, 2010 by paul alflen
Chuck Most Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 One o' these bad lads... This isn't the actual first one, that one's long gone, but I picked this up a year or so ago as a reminder of how far I've come in my hobby!
Chuck Most Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My first glue kit was an AMT T-Bird Stock Car- Rusty Wallace Coors car if I recall, and it was way over my head at the time! Of course, I built it right after I finished that Fox Mustang snapper, so maybe I was trying to move along with my skills a bit too fast!
jas1957 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) Probably about 1965, I was 8 the kit was a Premier Studebaker Lark. It was the first car I remember my parents owning. I picked it out at Woolworths, 29 or 39 cents I think. My grandfather helped me build it, I remember him asking if I was going to customize it. I had no idea what he was talking about so trying not to look too dumb I said yes. John Strick Edited August 16, 2010 by jas1957
highway Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My first model was a 1/16 scale MPC "General Lee". I got it either as a birthday or Christmas present when I was about 8 years old and my dad and I put it together. I'm very pleased AMT is reissuing this kit this year, and plan to buy it since the original is long since gone. At least this time, I'll paint it before it's put together unlike the first, and maybe I won't paint the sunvisors green this time, either!
DRG Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My first model was an AMT 1940 Ford. Three of us guys in the neighborhood walked out to Ontario's and bought one each and then the paints we needed. I want to say 1961 or 1962. By the way the model was $1.03 and the small jars of paint were .10 each.
Swifster Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My first kit was when I was 5 and my dad and I built a 1969 Chevy Impala annual kit. I'm not sure if it was an MPC or AMT though.
Romell R Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I got my first Kit in 1971 I was 5 years old. I dont remember what make or what type it was I do know it was a snaptite I remember my mom sitting me down in the middle of my room and showing me how to follow the steps and put the parts together. It was the most fun I had in my whole five years of life. Once I was done I wanted to do it again....So dear ol mom took me to a toy store in L.A. and let me pick my next model all by myself. I remember picking "CopOut" the funny car, my mother said "Are you sure thats the one you want?" With big eyes and a smile to match I nodded my head yes. My mother spent a little over 4.00 dollars that day (I remember she kept saying she spent soo much money that time) but we left with a tube of tester glue (man that stuff was bad), several bottles of paint & brushes. And that was my second build and here I am today still building. Thanks Mom. Romell
Dragline Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 My Dad bought me my first kit in 1970/71. We owned a "Head" shop and next door was a hobby shop. I always went in there and stared at all the models. One day Dad said "Pick one out" and i did. Revell Dave Deals Bug Bomb. Wish i still had it. Bob
Jim Gibbons Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 The first model I built on my own was the mid 60s 1/24 Monogram Ferrari 275P that was designed to be a simple model or used as a slot car body. I had watched or helped a little when my mom or dad would build a model for me (mom was A LOT better at it than dad!) but that Ferrari was solo. I wish I had gotten another when it was released again in the SSP program in the late '90s. That model and the car design became one of my favorites, and I built a 1/43 resin version that's in my gallery photos. I like the idea of a board project rebuilding our first kits. If I can find one of the the SSP 275P kits, I'd be in!
sobpinstriping Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 my first model was a huey hog helicopter when i was in second grade, i built a lot of airplanes when i was a kid because my grandfather dumpster dived the v.a. when he went for checkup and they threw out all the model planes and ships because the patients where huffing the paint, i still have a couple of planes and ships left and two cases of old revell glue which i still use and i dont think ill ever run out cheers mat
