Of course, companies like Consumer Reports mark the quality based on an average person driving on paved roads, which is why looking at their results for the Wrangler makes it look bad. Thing is though, most Wrangler owners don't care for the stiff ride and noise since they know it's meant to be basic and a great off-roader.

"Grain of Salt Alert"

Notice that the "most unreliable" vehicles are usually the ones purchased with the express intent of beating the snot out of them? I'll give you the newsflash for the next howevermany years they make pickups...they'll always be "the most unreliable" in direct proportion to how much they can tow/haul/be overloaded. Why? Because people use them to do things much tougher than what they ask a Prius to do. Ever notice the "reliable" cars are generally compacts with very little power, very little in the way of high-tech features, or gadgets? Shocking, I know. The only one on that list that I would do extra research on was the Aveo, since those should be "reliable" based on the class.

These kinds of articles have been the same since they started printing them (in print, on paper) 20+ years ago.

Rant over.

kinda like when toyota first started selling trucks in the US

the general opinion was that thier trucks sucked

untill the people at toyota realised that if you label a truck as a half ton truck the average truck owner will load it with one ton of payload

label a truck as a two tonner and they will drop three to four ton in there

so toyota started labeling there one ton trucks as half tonners and have enjoyed a much better reputation ever since

on a side note, i hear thier new slogan i "nothing can stop us now"

By the way, Cheap performance cars are usually "unreliable" too. People stretch to buy them, use them hard, and don't maintain them until they start making funny sounds. Elite performance cars like Porsches do OK, because their owners don't blink at $2k annual "services" where they replace anything that might wear out, and only use them as primary (and in winter) transportation about half the time...

I'd be interested to see an article on the most expensive to maintain cars, and just what exactly is replaced at each "maintenance" job... I'd be willing to bet some of the stuff the high-end cars consider "maintenance" would be considered "repair" on a lower-end car, and would make that lower-end car score lower on the reliability scale than the high-end car.

i remember when i was younger and replacing a blown engine was not only considered routine maintenance, it also happened to be the interval for changing the oil

I agree with your comments about the trucks, they are not comparable with cars based on their purpose and use.

Any ideas on what put the Colorado on the list? We had one at work and I really liked it. Its the only compact truck I've driven that I liked as much as my Tacoma. I haven't really heard of any issues with them, and I thought the 5cyl engine was kind of neat, pretty zippy but still got decent mileage.

The only problem I can thing of was when I worked at an oil change place in the pacific north west. For some reason every Colorado (we had a contract with Budwieser distributers so many) had water in the oil on the dipstick. It was really odd and I wanted to chalk it up to the air up there but only these tucks did it. Makes me worried about the heads further down the road.

The comments about maintenance versus repair had me chuckling and remembering my days working for car dealers. When I was in High School (30 years ago) I worked at a Mercedes/BMW/Alfa/Peugeot/Chrysler dealer in the Chicago suburbs (what a combo of makes, I know!). The difference in how the owners approached their vehicles was astounding, even within a given make. Some owners thought that their cars were an investment (and took excellent care of the car) and others viewed them as something to get around town in. In 1980, the top of the line Mercedes was $40,000 and to see some people trash one made me wonder how they could do so?! I guess when you have more money than sense you can afford to do it.

In regards to the Aveo/Colorado, I work for NAPA and come across these vehicles everyday and to hear some tell it, they are either "great cars/trucks" or "the biggest pieces of junk". I think it has more to do with who is driving them and how they are maintained. I know that the S-10 pickups they had were abused pretty hard and seemed to hold up fairly well all things considered. They usually drive them for 150,000 miles (which, like dog years is really more than a normal time span)or 6-7 years and at the end you can expect to get a great deal but have something that needs repairs, has dents and ripped seats.

As long as there are vehicles being built, there will always be a worst and best list.

So what are the 20 worst vehicles? I saw only 4 listed.

well i didn't see 20, i only saw 5. but from history, the list will go one forever..... yugo, pinto, ect., ect., lol.

Best Car in the World (IMO): 2007 Ford Fusion SE 4-cylinder/5-speed with Sport Appearance Package. Mine has 90,000 miles. Never a down day. No significant problems. Averages 26 MPG. Drives and handles great. It's all-day comfortable. No squeaks or rattles. It's not babied. I change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I get compliments on it even when it's really dirty. Best car I've ever owned.

i have a book, "the worlds worst cars" that's quite entertaining to read. alot of stuff in the book is just bad information or flat wrong. still there are alot of cars featured in the book that were or are known as being some of the worst cars ever.

I've flipped through that or a similar one. The guy seemed to randomly select cars he didn't like, I got the feeling he picked cars he owned that he had bad memories of like his ex-wife got the car in the divorce so he said it was a bad car. The Model T was considered one of the worst cars ever because it was the car that got people driving in large numbers B) .

It was really kind of sureal reading through the book, I had the feeling the editor didn't make the author take all of his required meds.

I don't quite understand the topic.

Is this about the worst made cars to ever hit the road? Or the worst cars which were made on the road? Or the worst made cars, which can still be found on the road? Or the worst made cars, which are on the road today? In any case, the worst made cars on the road are the ones made for off road use.

It appears to be a shoddily-researched article on the worst new vehicles for sale in the USA for 2010.

In this case I have to wholeheartedly disagree. I have no idea how you look at it over there, but four out of the five pictured vehicles aren't cars at all where I am from.

Posted

can't say i'd agree with that B) one of the best, most reliable "cars" i've ever owned was a '98 Jeep Wrangler. quite effective on road and very capable off road.

how do you determine the worst vehicles exactly? not an easy question to answer.

Dave

Even if this is the best car you have ever owned, there are better cars for the road.

I got lucky Mark my truch hadn't had the snot beat out of it, it had just hauled a lot of trailers and did lots of small jobs on a cattle farm. The guy had a bigger 3500 HD he used.

And all of the cars on the list -- -- are made by Detroit's Big Three"

So they have never heard of Fiat, Renualt, Triumph, Yugo, Simca, Mitsubishi, Hyundai,(dont defend them,I own one) should I go on ?

I'd take ANYTHING the big three have built over any of this "stuff'.
