curt raitz Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 I always have a Formula One kit of some sort on my hobby bench...seem to get one done about every two months. The latest is Tamiya's 1/20th scale Ferrari 312T3. This kit has been in my cupboard for at least 15 years. Decals were shot, got a set from Indycals for the Gilles Villeneuve car he raced to his 1st victory in the 1978 Canadian GP. typical Tamiya...everything fit except the cowling does not sit flush on body only thing added to kit was the mesh screens on the intakes Enjoy: you can see where the cowling does not fit, especially near the left rear corner... The thing I like about photos...they bring out the spots you missed, need to paint the botlle caps on brake resivoirs black and the fire extinguisher needs the retaining straps painted. Still to build...Tamiya 1/20: Ferrari F60, Brabham BT46 & BT50, McLaren MP4/8 Ford; Fujimi 1/20: McLaren MP4/6; Hasegawa 1/24: Ferrrari F1-89; Jorgenson Resin: Parnelli VPJ4 and Tamiya 1/12: Ferrari 312T4 Thanx for lookin'
MonoPed Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 You really have a knack for those builds, and this one is no exception. Nice work!
elan Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 Nice work, I've got one of these in my pile also. I just can't crank out F-1 models that fast (or anything else).
peter31a Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 That's a great build of Gilles' first win car. Thanks for sharing it with us.
SpikeSchumacher Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Great work Curt! I've got the same kit languishing in the "to be built" pile. Just finished the Tamiya '98 season McLaren. Looks like we are in the same neck of the woods. I'll email you next time I build another F-1 model. Mathias Monterey, CA
weasel Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 (edited) that and the 6 wheel Tyrell[sp?] are a couple of my favs... oh, and, niceley done, i've got a couple 'projects' in that age range i should finish!! lol Edited April 29, 2010 by weasel
935k3 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Nice job , is the white area on that wraps around the back of the cockpit area decal or paint. I know the original kit decals have it as a decal. You have to add some tabs from evergreen plastic glued under the edge of the body work so it locks in place. I do that kind of thing to everything I build, I hate ill fitting body panels.
Gregg Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Very well done. And your photos are fantastic!!!! Thank you for sharing.
Crazy Ed Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Curt, another in a long line of great builds. Courious about the Intake Screens, would you might sharing how you formed and cut them? And are they Photoetch or really Screens? Ed out here in S.E. Arizona

Arizona Thanx It's really simple, I'll put together a few photos of how I do it and put in the "Tips, Tricks and Techniques" Forum I use a really fine mesh screen for these.
Brizio Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Great job! Gilles was one of my favorite F1 driver!
simonr Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Hey Kurt, why you need the cowling if the magic of this great model is inside?..'the hell with the cowling! Simón P. Rivera Torres

The white area is a decal from Indycals, wraps around nicely and is fairly opaque The origional kit decals were shot (water-damaged)

Peter Lombardo Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Curt....very nice job! I built that kit in 1991 and it has been sitting on my shelf waiting for the 312T and 312T2 to join it. Finally they will all be reunited on my shelf in a few months. I really like the mesh intake screens you made...see, you were forced to make one to replace the missing one from the Hasegawa kit and now you have another skill. Anyway, great job as usual. I like the how the Indycals decals cover. I have another one of these kits.....I think I will get those decals too.
Scalper Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Very Nice. The model looks great. and nice photos.

Thanx Peter The Indycal decals are very similiar to Fred Cadys...they are thin and opaque and easy to work with they react very nicely to Solvaset...I don't know about microscale , never have had much luck with their stuff also Gunze Sangyo's Mr. Softset works, it is a little hotter than solvaset I've used quite a few of their decals and have not been dissappointed, yet! here's a link to their site: http://www.indycals.net/

I just received, from them, the full decal set including those evil tobacco company logos for the Williams FW 16 I will begin in the near future. I will do it as it looked on the starting grid in May 1994 with Ayrton Senna getting ready for his last ride into the history books.

I need to get the Williams FW 16 also, I really liked Ayrton Senna...especially when he and Alain Prost used to hook up

Later, Gosh, I've only built about 2/3 of the 1/20th F1 kits out there... now Hasegawa and Fujimi are pumpin' them out along with Tamiya what's a fella gonna do? hire more elves i guess... c'ya buddy
Raul_Perez Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 If that's one of your elves, I'm on my way!!! Later,
ZIL 111V Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 ...Canadian Grand-Prix, 1978, in Montreal....pretty cold day as I remember...on TV!!! Really Nice 312T3, my favorite one in Tamiya's early 1/20th F1 kits. Must admit Tamiya did a great job with it's 1/20 F1 series back in late 70's, those kits where very nice, But always tought that this T3 version was the Reutman car.(Gilles T3 had small minor body differences).
