I’m a recent returnee to modelling & I have to say my enthusiasm for the hobby is at an all time high.

The evenings are drawing in & there’s a feel of autumn in the air, by 8 o clock I’ve finished up in the garden, put my animals to bed, & my mind is drawn to the bench in my new modelling shed where my latest project is calling me. I enter, kick off my boots, and set the heater to low, switch on the wireless & park my butt in that old familiar chair.

The hours seam to fly by & before I know it its 10.30 & my lady wife is bringing me out the final hot drink of the evening. With a wave of her hand & a crisp “I’m off to bed, don’t stay out here too long†she’s gone & I’m back in the modelling bubble.

At times like this I could stay out there all night long.

I was wondering, it cant just be me that gets this feeling do others of you feel the same & indeed have you stayed up all night beavering away on your latest project in your own little modelling bubble.

Davey.

It has happened on occassion but only on a Friday or Saturday evening.

have to get up and go to work in the morning during the week.

I'm medically retired, my children are grown, and are mostly gone, my wife works nights, so I model whenever I want. It's unusual for me to be in bed before four in the morning. Some of my best modeling is done after midnight.

I'm most productive between the hours of ten PM and three AM as far as modeling goes. Then again, this '62 Pontiac was built in one night a year or so ago... the sun was just starting to set when I started on it, and just beginning to rise as I finished it! Reruns of Monster Quest and the progress I was making just kept pushing me onward.

I have done this when I was younger. Especially when I was into building sailing ship models! No better time to do rigging than midnight to 5am with WSM Nashville on the radio!

I have on occasion found myself so engrosed in a build that I lost all track of time only to notice it was kind of light outside when I was heading to the bathroom!

As of lately I find myself not able to sleep some nights (lots since the wife's stroke, I lay there and listen for her breathing) and the work bench with some background music and no computer on it is really calming! You just get lost in the build and the whole world goes away for a while!:)

I think all of us get into bubbles like that when we're doing things we enjoy. I've had the bubble set in while building. It's been a while, but it happens. I oftentimes have it happen while I'm reading or writing the novel I'll have published someday, or....well, with the biggest time black-hole of all. The computer!

Sounds like you really get into the "zen" of modeling. Your hobby is working very well for you! :)

My best modeling is done on those long night builds! Nothing like building all night and sleeping all day!

I'm so jealous

I wish I had time to build

Keep up the building and the positive attitude of OUR hobby

It is greatly appreciated.

The scenario that Davey described sounds fantastic. I wish I could be in a similar situation, but a serious lack of model building time is my problem.

I have to admit, I'm a night person myself, but sometimes I just get into a zone, and it happens, I'm at the bench 8-10 hours before I know it, music is good and it just flows from my hands, it's awesome, tho it don't catch me much, but when it does it's great....

I am glad to be among so many like minded creatures of the dark!! Once the kids are in bed for the night and I can pull out whatever I'm working on its quite the norm to be quietly working away on it until the early hours of the new day!! In fact I dont think I have had one of those nights for a while now and tonight would be a good night for spending some time building instead of going cross eyed in front of this dam computer!!

I’m retired now so for the most part I’m able to do as I please….until the Wife says otherwise. Quite strange at first but now I can model anytime I like….until the Wife says otherwise…..sounds familiar. ;):D

I have to admit after spending my entire working life in Agriculture retirement seamed a bit daunting.

I enjoyed the long hours in the tractor cab ploughing, cultivating, drilling etc. At busy times I’d be driving all night, seeing wildlife that I wouldn’t normally see during the day.

Warm starry nights bring moths to the driving lamps & Badgers would often follow the plough looking for worms & grubs to eat.

When its time for breakfast I’d make the last passes & bring that big `ol Case out`a work for the last time, head for home & the prospect of a hearty meal. Pulling into the yard I’d shut her down & climb form the cab & be instantly reminded of my connection with the land. The smell of freshly turned soil stuck to the polished plough shear & the unmistakeable aroma of a hot diesel….its a ploughman thing.

Retirement holds no fear now for I get the same feeling from modelling that I did from driving; only there’s no pressure.

I’m thinking of getting a CB for the shed as most of the ploughmen in my area use them; especially at night for a bit of company. Call it payback for the ribbing I used to take from the young bucks who are now putting in 20 hour shifts while I’m snug & cosy building models in my shed. B)B)

When the time suites I think I’ll try a modelling all nighter, it sounds fun.

Be safe.

Davey.

What makes me laugh sometimes is that I'll into that zone and work all Sunday and my wife will come in and say "The mess looks the same as it did this morning. What did you accomplish?" And it'll be true, to the untrained eye, not a lot got done. But the parts I did work on are now "perfect".

LOL very well put, I too seem to do most modeling at night, all throughout the night while listening to the tv in the background. With a lot of time to do whatever I want with (waiting to get called back into one job while the next one can be done right from home in the morning) I dabble with my WIP somewhat during the day only if I need to use a rotary tool, since I live in an apartment complex. I think its more productive at night, usually nobody there to bother you (for me the boyfriend's in bed, and the cats are sleeping on the couch lol). Guess you can call us the midnight modelers lol :D

I have worked third shift for the past 13 years (or some variation of it anyway), so my body is used to being up when the pale moon creeps across the darkened sky. Now that I am temporarily on days and suffer the wrath of the flaming Orange sphere (how soothing her warm embrace is though), my evenings are free for the most part. My body still harkens to the night, and too often I find myself deep in building/scheming/plotting upon my plastic world until I look up to see spears of morning glow piercing the dark. Makes for a long day with no rest between.

I can't go to sleep early even if I have to work the next day so usually, my favorite building times are from 9pm to 1 and sometimes 2am during the work week. Of course, the next day during work I am very sleepy but it's just the way my body is accustomed. I love Fridays because I can build until 5am if need be knowing that I don't have to wake up early!! ;) What's really funny is that I usually don't feel like building Saturday nights or the weekend for that matter.... ;)

I model when I can.

When I get a model, I think about it...

I drive a lot for my work, so, I can make plans for my projects.

My plan? To "attempt" to find and build every car I've ever owned.

I also would like to build the family cars...

and of course "the dream cars"

I recently have encouraged a couple of friends to try the hobby.

"i need a hobby" they claim, so, I found their favorite cars/motorcycles

and bought them to give, to see if this hobby interests them.

I've got both of them planning their color schemes.

KISS

Keep It Simple Silly

Well? If they are thinking about what color paint to buy? then,

the hobby is working already, they are forgetting their daily grind

and not stressing about other things.

:(

I could easily spend ALL my spare

time in this hobby. (oh, and slot cars too!)

Trains are tempting...

I encouraged another friend by accident as well.

She showed up at the house this weekend with a B-24J Dragon Liberator!

Well? I guess... I'm somewhat of an influence? (Its all about encouragement)

We need an evening where we can all build in one room together.

Share ideas, and help out with tips n tricks.

:o

3 friends, 1 new to the hobby, 2 brought back into it! Yay!

:)

So, Yes... I love to build in the bubble after the traffic is quiet outside.
