Duntov Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I was not sure where to put this one so I dropped it here. I have not been able to locate Tamiya Fine Gray Primer for about two weeks. Locally, no one has it….backordered they say. The web is no better. I have been told two things 1) There has been a labeling issue (thanks to the state of California) rendering the product “not available†to all of us and / or 2) There was a simple “fumble†in the ordering process that has caused the pipeline to dry up until it is shipped again. Does anyone have any info on this? Regards Bill (Duntov)
Brendan Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 There having the same problems they had a couple of years ago with labels. even thought they're an acrylic lacquer like their other spray paints. Kind of expect it to take a while.

I may also try sandable auto primer (1:1 type) but would prefer a product specifically for hobby use..... Regards Bill (Duntov)

Alclad is good too but I don't have an airbrush so I don't have any direct experience with it. I only know what others have told me.
Brendan Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I use Duplicolor Primer Sealer. It's thinned out automotive primer. Works well on plastic and resin kits. You might want to give it a try.
935k3 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I love the Alclad primer now that I got an Iwata eclipse HP-CS. I could not get it to spray smoothly with my Badger 175 Crescendo. As soon as I got the Iawata I noticed it sprayed the primer better and Alclad Chrome. It's very thin and does not hide details.

Brendan I use this as well...closest thing I've found to Tamiya's grey primer, hasn't "crazed" any plastic yet!
Brendan Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Brendan I use this as well...closest thing I've found to Tamiya's grey primer, hasn't "crazed" any plastic yet! The only issue I've ever had was with the Revell C6R Corvettes. And it was on the hood. That was right when Revell switched to the softer plastic. And I went a little heavy on the primer.
Zoom Zoom Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 I recently tried airbrushing Mr. Surfacer 1000....I could easily forget about Tamiya spray primer with this stuff. I'm sure the Tamiya stuff will return someday.

Zoom Zoom Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 I agree with you Bob, that stuff is terrific! What are you thinning it with? Mr. Color Thinner...it will thin w/acetone (just tested) but it lays down very flat w/o that nice semigloss/satin sheen it gets w/Mr. Color Thinner. Cost?? available in the states?? Bought it (40 ml bottle) at a LHS many years ago, I've seen it since. Bottles, spray cans. Not sure of cost. Google...
MikeMc Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Thanks Bob....Your recommendation should sell a lot!!
