I agree, its a great song that never grows old. Gordon Lightfoot and his music is one of Canada's most under valued musical treasures. rob

Guest Johnny Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 (edited) My uncle Jack, (grandma's brother-in-law0 left the ship and retired after she made port. The Captain tried to get him to stay on for one more trip nbut he said he had promised Evie he would be home for their anniversary that year. He died in 1989. He told his wife he loved her and was going to join his mates, then took a breath . When ever he was drinking he talked about how he should have been with them when it happened and he carried that with him all those years. She has a very large scale replica of the Edmund Fitzgerald on the mantel above the fireplace. (about 4ft in length) She passed away two years ago and the only kid left was her oldest son who is in a nursing home due to a brain injury he suffered on the USS Forrestal. I have no idea what may have become of the scale replica. Wish I did. Here you go! http://www.factorydi...mc/MM9-051.html http://www.maritimereplicas.com/details.php?id=294 Edited February 16, 2011 by Johnny
Chuck Most Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Many of the Great Lakes ore freighters from the Fitzgerald's era (1958) were pretty similar in terms of design, the main difference being length, number of hatches, pilothouse, etc. In fact, all steel freighters had essentially the same basic hull design most of the last century- if you could find a kit of a similar ship, it wouldn't be a big deal to modify it to more closely resemble the Fitz. I doubt there are any replicas in kit form... as far as 'niche markets' go, the market for Great Lakes freighters is probably miniscule! Yeah- the song was great, but "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", and "If You Could Read My Mind" are WAY better, and no, I don't care if those songs are almost ten years older than I am!
Harry P. Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Yeah- the song was great, but "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", and "If You Could Read My Mind" are WAY better... Agree, agree and agree! And don't forget "The Watchman's Gone" and "Slide on Over." two other good ones.
Guest Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 There was a pair of resin and PE kits done in the late 90's, one in 1/700, I have it, not bad, and one in 1/350, from APC Hobbies, dont know if they are still around.
Lunajammer Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 http://www.factorydi...mc/MM9-051.html Yikes, price knocked down to $1,295 for a 24-inch model? Wha'd they do, carve it out of baby panda bones? When I did radio, that song was one of two bathroom songs. At a time when most pop songs were 3-1/2 minutes, this one gave you time to hit the head and get back. Ask any DJ of the day and they'll say the same thing. What was the other one? "Freebird"

You didn't count "American Pie" with the bathroom songs?
Harry P. Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 What? You didn't count "American Pie" with the bathroom songs? How about "In-a-gadda-da-vida?" 17 minutes. Enough time for a bathroom break, a snack and a quick nap!
Guest Johnny Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 How about "In-a-gadda-da-vida?" 17 minutes. Enough time for a bathroom break, a snack and a quick nap! Yeah but they had the shorter "radio" version! The only place I remember that played the entire song back then was Larry Lujack's Subterranian Circus after Midnight on CFL I believe it was!
Joe Handley Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 How about "In-a-gadda-da-vida?" 17 minutes. Enough time for a bathroom break, a snack and a quick nap! Wasn't that a hymn? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PyBWLALFLQ&feature=related
Harry P. Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Wasn't that a hymn? I love how she konks out after she finishes!
Joe Handley Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I love how she konks out after she finishes! I honestly think that has to be one of the best comedy scenes on tv, between Homer and Marge giggling about making out to that "hymn", everybody getting more and more haggered while singing, Lovejoy (who is voiced by a member of Spinal Tap)saying that it sounded like it might be Rock and/or Roll, then the organist passing out at the end, it's just entertaining..........too bad they don't have a full 15-17 minute version of that

Rev. Lovejoy's voice is Harry Shearer. He does a bunch of other Simpsons characters, too, like Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned, Otto, etc.
Joe Handley Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I couldn't remember his name, but knew he was part of Spinal Tap.
Chuck Most Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I couldn't remember his name, but knew he was part of Spinal Tap. Harry Shearer, perhaps? He was Derek Smalls in Spinal Tap, and he does the voices of Principal Skinner, Otto, Smithers, and many other Simpsons characters. How's bout a couple of gratuitous Lakeboat shots? Here's the Carl D. Bradley, sank in 1958 (the year after the Fitzgerald was launched)- And the last large freighter lost on the lakes before the Fitzgerald, the 60 year old Daniel J Morrell, which sank in 1966 (this particular image is from 1936)-
