Patrick2005 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Can't we all just get along? Come on everyone, all together now, KUMBAIAHHH......
oldscool Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Sorry for starting all this Harry. It has ended up rather comical though . Should the period be before or after the emoticon in the above sentence? gus
Keef Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 This. I myself find it quite annoying having to look up what all these abbreviations mean. It's not like you can't spend an extra minute or two spelling it out. It makes it much easier for everyone to read. Okay? Kthnxbai. Instead of saying that, a more feasible way would be, Okay, Thanks, Bye.... Just sayin'. Shaddup.... just sayin
bbowser Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I'm not going to bust anyone's chops if they use "their" instead of "there" or "your" when they mean "you're"... but seriously, didn't we learn this stuff in second grade??? I'm actually pretty surprised at just how common these mistakes are here on the forum. It's only going to get worse. Yeah Harry, you and I learned this by the 2nd grade, but the "education" our tax dollars finance seems to be going downhill fast. Who needs to learn math when you have a calculator, or grammar when it's so hard on your thumbs? Voice recognition is coming fast, they don't bother teaching cursive writing anymore. I'm sorry, I'm feeling old and grumpy I guess

Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Sorry for starting all this Harry. It has ended up rather comical though . Should the period be before or after the emoticon in the above sentence? gus I'm glad to see you're taking this all in good fun. As far as correct emoticon punctuation... I never learned that. When I was a kid they didn't have emoticons!!!
Rob Hall Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I'm glad to see you're taking this all in good fun. As far as correct emoticon punctuation... I never learned that. When I was a kid they didn't have emoticons!!! They need to update 'Elements of Style' to include emoticon etiquette...
XJ6 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Why is dyslexic such a hard word? You would think an easier word could be used so people with that affliction could use it. Furthermore...who was the jerk who decided LISP should have an S in it? By the way...this is not a dig at anyone here...just trying to keep the mood light. You are a real funny guy there pal....I could only assume since you are the one who must have been a Jerk to who would have thought of a Jerk to have a S in LISP.....Sorry Pal i just don't like to see people with disabilitys get picked on.
Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 They need to update 'Elements of Style' to include emoticon etiquette... I wonder how many "writers" these days even know what "Elements of Style" is, let alone actually use it!
Rob Hall Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I wonder how many "writers" these days even know what "Elements of Style" is, let alone actually use it! Good point...I used it throughout college and grad school, but that was 20 years ago...(which makes me feel old typing that)..
XJ6 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Look at the demeanor of your message as opposed to mine. How would I know about a disability? If I can I always try to help people on this board and in my everyday life. That being said,I will not suffer a fool.I can lead a horse to water, but I can't turn it into a duck. Have a nice day That is a point.....you don't know if people here on the board have a disability....so if they spell wrong....or just don't make their point clear....then there is No Disrespect.... You Quote: That being said, I will not suffer a fool. I can lead a horse to water, but i can't turn it into a duck....well you got me on that..what ever your point tying to be....Have A Good Day Sir.....And Most Cheers.
Harry P. Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Good point...I used it throughout college and grad school, but that was 20 years ago...(which makes me feel old typing that).. Don't feel bad... my college days were more than 30 years ago...
XJ6 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I wasn't picking on anyone with disabilities as I am a disabled person myself. I was making fun of the words themselves. Check yourself before you go around calling names. You asked who the Jerk Was that that decided LISP should have an S in it....Well Why did you call me a Jerk i was the one who decided LISP should have a S in it
LAone Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 ok, so is all of this on tomorrrow's spelling test??
Rob Hall Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 You asked who the Jerk Was that that decided LISP should have an S in it....Well Why did you call me a Jerk i was the one who decided LISP should have a S in it LISP definitely has an 'S'...and lots of parentheses....took a course in LISP in college... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisp_(programming_language)
Cato Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 I got into college right after it was invented...(old b**tard emoticon)
Dr. Cranky Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 It's all about how one communicates ideas . . . language, say, is like the best clothes you can wear to go out to church or to a fine meal, etc . . . We all make mistakes . . . and we should all be respectful of folks who are trying to get their point across the best way possible . . .
XJ6 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Wow! You just aren't worth wasting any more time on. Seek psychiatric help! everyone here and anywhere else knows factually you weren't the one to coin the term. Get over yourself butch! You're nobody special! Hit a Nerve.....Calm down sure did not want you to get upset.....Let's just let it go......We said our Grace....have a good day.
Jantrix Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) Ninety nine times out of one hundred the only time we really get bent out of shape on spelling/grammar is when we get a post like this. And if you think I'm exaggerating, I assure you I'm not. "so i wuz in my hoby shop yestrday and saw this trumper kit or sumpin and saw the prise was 50 bucs and i was like no %&$@'in way so if any of u have 1 that you don want id really like 1 cuz i hav this reely great idea 4 a promod edsel or maybe il donkit! LOL!!! " All we ask is that a person grace us with a capital in the front, a form of punctuation separating sentences and the use of spell check is very easy for anyone to do, it just takes a little more effort. Honestly is that so hard? Edited August 31, 2011 by Jantrix
Lunajammer Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 . . . and we should all be respectful of folks who are trying to get their point across the best way possible . . . Which, ironically, is happening here. Have you noticed there are complete sentences and few spelling errors in most of these posts. Is everyone crossing the T's and dotting the I's just for this discussion? Carry on. It's been my experience the cryptic shortcuts, communications indifference and writing decay went into high gear at the dawn of the Blackberry. I assume when I'm plodding through someone's sanskrit, I like to think it's because they are texting.
Danno Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Can't we all just get along? Come on everyone, all together now, KUMBAIAHHH......
Danno Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 ...Aaaaaand you show up only to flame me. As usual. No, he also showed up to pour more gasoline on the fire when somebody lost it and flamed me. Don't feel like the lone ranger; guess we're both on his 'favorites' list!
Danno Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 I wonder how many "writers" these days even know what "Elements of Style" is, let alone actually use it! ... or even ~ can read it!
