Zoom Zoom Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Once this model was in primer I was indecisive about what color to apply to this Cobra. Mach I 2003/Eric and another friend convinced me to paint it similarly to Eric's bare metal 427; but with a twist. They decided for me that I had to finish it with polished stripes  Actually it wasn't difficult at all; I used Krylon dull aluminum which works great and it polishes out a bit by merely buffing it with a soft polishing rag. I masked the stripes off and polished away, and got a nice subtle color change and a bit of a polished appearance. Ultimately I'd like the stripes to be a bit brighter, but that might not happen. They're good now, and the body will get more detail and some meatballs and sponsor decals. Fun project Wheels/tires are from a parts-box Fujimi GT40 Mk II which are infinitely better rolling stock than what Monogram provides.
MrObsessive Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 I love the look of that aluminum Bob! Your pics have the effect of beautifully airbrushed paintings!
ramonesblues Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Where did you find krylon dull aluminum? I used that stuff extensively on 1/1 show cars for detailing small brackets and other things. Haven't seen a can in a couple of years, at least.
Mr. Can Am Garage Posted April 27, 2007 Posted April 27, 2007 Neat! Wonder if we can convince Peterson to try that?

Reliable Resin Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 OUTSTANDING ! & Nice Pics I have a FIA in the Bull Pen that requires a few more Hours to Finish
RJWood Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 Great job on the Racing stripes, I think any other color would not look better. Are you going to use the kit engine? The wheel choice is perfect. Can't wait to see more progress. 8)
MonoPed Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 oh man, I am soo diggin this one!! Looks great Bob!!
Zoom Zoom Posted April 28, 2007 Author Posted April 28, 2007 Thanks for the replies; this project sort of sneaked up on me. It'll get the kit engine and most OOB details, but I'll definitely add a racing harness and fire extinguisher. I'll probably add plug wires and some assorted hoses for some extra detail. Aside from the time it took (considerable) to get the body smoothed and primed, this paint job was about as easy as they get. Whether sprayed light or heavy it just settles out very smooth. No airbrush needed 8) This is the old metallic blue body from Monogram, issued in the '80's. I assume it's the first issue of the Cobra from them. I got lots of inspiration from Eric Cole's raw metal Cobra, not sure if he posted it here or not.
RyanSilva Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 That is amazing, you pulled off the aluminum very well, great sheen.
SoCalCarCulture Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 Looking good Bob - I see this one with a similar scheme frequently at local cruises...
Zoom Zoom Posted April 29, 2007 Author Posted April 29, 2007 Dave, that's what I would love for my model to have looked like (I've seen pics of the cars from the mfg). Unfortunately the Krylon paint doesn't polish up anywhere near that shiny so I'm going to stick w/the "ghost stripe" effect which still looks pretty cool. I think the only way to get stripes that bright would be to have the car plated and then mask the stripes and lightly sand the surface and dullcoat. I didn't realize until late in the day that I painted the Cobra 427 on 4/27 8)
Eric C Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 I got lots of inspiration from Eric Cole's raw metal Cobra, not sure if he posted it here or not. Nope, never did. I think I built it before I joined here but here's a couple pics of it if you don't mind me posting them in your thread.
Zoom Zoom Posted April 29, 2007 Author Posted April 29, 2007 That Cobra is amazing, even better in person. I got my stripes looking a bit brighter w/the SNJ aluminum polishing powder. Still subtle, but brighter. I'm happy even if they aren't a chrome or highly-polished aluminum appearance.
RJWood Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I agree Bob, the stripes look perfect, no need for polishing any more. I was wondering if Your cobra and Eric Cole's are the same kit? Both models look great.
Zoom Zoom Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 Eric's was built using the version (green on the boxcover) that's out now. Mine is the original version, the #98 car that was molded in metallic blue plastic. I guess my kit is nearly 20 years old  Here are a couple more shots; I added SNJ polishing powder to the stripes, and also added dark gray panel line washes.
MonoPed Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Bob, The stripes are subtle, but really change the look of the car! Eric, that Cobra is very nice!! Monogram's Cobra has been around since the late 80's, 1988 I think. There was the S/C kit molded in metallic blue, that has the Halibrand wheels, singel 4bbl intake with the cool air boxx, full windscreen, rollbar, tonnuw cover, finned valve covers and competition jack plates. Then there was the "Street" issue molded in red, that has knock-off wire wheels, street bumpers, an uptop, no rollbar, a different dash, 2/4bbl intake, smooth valve covers, smooth hood, and a full windscreen. Next up was the Essex Wire Cobra (CSX3009) molded in white, it was nearly identicle to the S/C kit, but lost the full windscreen in favor of a race version, and it got the much nicer "big-n-little" Goodyear Blue Streak tires. The Motion drag kit is mostly the S/C kit with some of the street parts and a couple new parts added. The Ken Miles limited kit and the recent kit are straight re-pops of the Essex Wire version with different decals.
Eric C Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I agree Bob, the stripes look perfect, no need for polishing any more. I was wondering if Your cobra and Eric Cole's are the same kit? Both models look great. I think Bob's it the original blue metal flake version and mine is the latest release version with the green colored cobra on the box, the Street Burner series, I think is what they call it.
RJWood Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I have seen that kit, and will have to pick one up. It looks more detailed than the AMT Cobra, the one I have. The Cobra has always been a favorite of mine since I was young. and thats a long time.
MonoPed Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 The AMT kit is an early 260ci car with worm/sector steering, and has been around since 1964 or 1965. not a great, but unless Accurate Miniatures comes through with their raodster kits, it's the only game out there. The recent issue os the ex-Monogram kit has two sets of decals, one set is for CSX3008, which is the first 427 Cobra to win a championship (1965 A Production, driven by Hal Keck), and a much later incarnation of CSX3009 (the Essex Wire Cobra) as it raced in the '70s, even though the kit doesn't accurately depict the car at that time. Here are my builds of CSX3008, CSX3009, and a heavily modified version of the AMT cobra that represents the Cobra Mark Donohue drove to victory at VIR in 1964. Unfair Advantage: CSX3008: CSX3009:
Eric C Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Those are some great looking Cobra's, Brian. Looking for some more progress from Bob now... LOL, I know this one will be awesome also!
