Nick Notarangelo Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 I've been in kind of a funk for about a year,I got a bunch of half ways and almost there projects but I just can't bring my self to finish them. So what do you guys do to get out of the funk??
Harry P. Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Why worry about it? It's a hobby, not a job. If you don't feel like building right now, just don't build. I sometimes go for years without building anything. If I don't feel the urge to build, I just don't, and don't think twice about it. And when I do get the urge to build, I build. It's pretty simple, really. Why worry if you don't feel like building anything right now? Who says you always have to be working on a project? If your hobby is a source of stress, you need to get a different hobby! Build when you feel like, don't when you don't, and stop worrying about it.
Lunajammer Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 It happens to us all. You're not enjoying it enough to continue. The answer for me is to walk away. Box everything up, organize, clean and dust and walk away for as long as it takes. Sure I'm always thinking about but eventually I miss it and come back with new vigor and usually the obstacles that held me up in the first place appear miniscule.
Dr. Cranky Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 I approach the dilemma a different way. If I don't feel like building, I look for inspiration all over the place, between the forums and the reading materials available . . . anything model related usually helps a great deal. Unlike Harry's approach, I try to keep a routine almost every day because I have found over the long run that building models DOES HELP steady my nerves, my mind. Now that I am middle aged, I am trying to keep hand-eye coordination sharp . . . I do try to build as often, but I also do take long breaks, and those are really important too. I think this is an extremely serious and useful topic of conversation . . . .
Nick Notarangelo Posted September 17, 2011 Author Posted September 17, 2011 So far this is and has been a good responce to my question and I thank you, as for buying something new I got plenty and I have a ton of diffrent modeling subjects thanx to running a hobbyshop for almost ten years. BUt this is not only a question about me but for some other models I have talked to online from other modeling forums around the world, but Since I like this site the most I figured I ask it here.
Dr. Cranky Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 Well, you've come to the right place. Other places might not be as open to the idea of discussion creativity and depression. It definitely is a very interesting topic.
crazyjim Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 It must be me. I've never been in a modeling funk. I start a kit and work on it until it's done - sometimes a couple of weeks and other times a few months. I never start a kit and put it back in the box for building/finishing later.
martinfan5 Posted September 17, 2011 Posted September 17, 2011 (edited) The only modeling funk I get in is when I can not decide what I want to build , and like above I dont get starting a build and putting in back in the box and let it sit for who knows how long. my80malibu Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 At times when this happens to me, I build a snap kit. Usually something that is going to go together Easily and with some small detailing, it will improve the look greatly.I suggest one of the Boyd's, wheels of fire, or Jada kits.
jeffs396 Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Attend a model show...seeing others builds "in the flesh" so to speak helps to get your own projects going...
von Zipper Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I've been in all kinds of funks in my life, but a modeling funk is the best one so far.

Dr. Cranky Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 All forms of inspiration helps the builder get over the slump. For example, going to a junk yard often gets EYEGORE and Doctor Cranky CRANKED UP!
Jantrix Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I hit this wall a few years back. I had about six builds in progress, and man I just wasn't into any of them. I had some scratchbuilding/bodywork/aesthetic/styling issues, that were just getting me real down. And I'm the kinda guy that just doesn't like stress with my rexalation, so I just avoided the hobby table for six months straight. Even the thought of starting a new one would get me down with those builds waiting in the wings. Until one evening my son comes in saying he needs a new kit, he'd finished his last, and I had an epiphany! "Son, you are now the proud owner of a collection of dad's screw ups. Congratulations!" After I told him he was free to do whatever he wants with them, he was ecstatic and I was FREE!
mikemodeler Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I haven't sat at the bench in over 2 months, life has gotten in the way. I go through stages where I spend 6 nights a week building and then 6 months away! My trouble is that I have modeling ADD. I get about 2/3 the way done and then I move on to something else. I have about 6 - 8 kits at any given time in various stages of completion so I ALWAYS have something to work on. Like previously mentioned, I will grab a snap kit if I need some instant gratification. Nothing like one of those Revell 69 Camaros to break up the funk. Hang in there, use this time away from the bench to clear your head and rejuvenate yourself and come back with a vengance!
Dr. Cranky Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 One thing I've come to believe it about life is that it is ALWAYS going to be in the way. Like most things you love to do, you have to make the time.
Guest Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I've been in one myself lately for the past couple of months. I've been busy with real cars and just haven't had the time or the urge to build. I joined the Gluebomb CPB and actually thought I was going to finish one up. Everything is painted and ready to detail. It's just getting that urge to do all of the detailing that has stopped that project in it's tracks. That and the arduous task of making up my mind what rolling stock I'm going to settle on. That's a problem that plagues almost every build I do anymore. It may be time for me to build a box stock or a curbside. Those almost always get me back into the swing of things. I just hate to start another project when I have so many other unfinished projects.
imatt88 Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 (edited) I'm in one as well. Since I've moved into my apartment, I really don't have a place to paint anymore, so I reach a certain point in my build and I stop. Its also getting cold now, so painting is even harder... I joined the GlueBomb GB, but I haven't made much progress lately I'll get out of it eventually, but right now its slow going..... Cheers, Ian Edited September 21, 2011 by imatt88
