Erik Smith Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 I could build a replica of this: Found this thing at an auto parts store in Wichita Falls, TX this summer. It was being driven by a guy in his late forties with two or three kids. I did just get a Ford Taurus kit, so maybe... Anybody else have pictures of totally impractical modifications?
Eshaver Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 It's bad enough working on a stock one of these . My former wife has one . I dunno bout driving about Wichita Falls neither . The cops there had a habit of shootin first an askin questions lata too................. Ed Shaver
Kris Morgan Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 All American Models did offer a resin sable wagon back in the day.
Chuck Most Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 Years ago AAM did a Taurus wagon- if you could find one of those you could rework it into a Sable.
Maindrian Pace Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 3.8 T Bird Super Coupe blower? Looks fun, if a little twitchy under boost. I'm pretty sure there were Taurus resin wagon bodies back in the day. -MJS
george 53 Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 The trick is FINDIN an AAM Taurus wagon that WON'T cost you as much as the REAL thing!!! Good Luck!
Foxer Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 and I bet he used Chuck's tape trick to get that hood hole that close!
Chuck Most Posted November 5, 2011 Posted November 5, 2011 For me anyway, digging up an AAM transkit might be less of a pain than converting an AMT Taurus SHO into a wagon, much less a Sable!
Draggon Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Thats pretty wild and, uh, strange. Somewhere in my stash of old magazines there is a Popular hot rodding, I think, with an 80's gm front wheel drive something that has a blower on the transverse engine sticking out of the hood. Sure is wierd seeing them sideways.
Camshaft Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I would love to build a Sable wagon. I learned to drive in that big beast, sadly ours was on its last legs and it was scrapped soon after I got my license. I still get a little nostalgic when I see one "in the wild."
Joe Handley Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 The trick is FINDIN an AAM Taurus wagon that WON'T cost you as much as the REAL thing!!! Good Luck! So it'll be what, $75-$100?
Joe Handley Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I like the looks of it. It does have a bit of a rat rod feel, wonder if it's a SC motor or the factory motor with the SC intake?
Camshaft Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 (edited) Just looked at this thing again...what's going on with the grille? I remember those Sables being "bottom feeders" with no grille, instead having a lighted center section. Edited November 7, 2011 by Camshaft
Joe Handley Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Looks like it could be a modified Taurus grill.
Maindrian Pace Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I think it is the center lighted section, slotted and painted body color. Kind of inventive. -MJS
george 53 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 So it'll be what, $75-$100? Easy Joe! For some reason AAM's kits are very expensive. I have two of them and they were nicely cast kits, but I don't understand the high cost for them.Glad I got mine when i did, caz I sure wouldn't pay some of the prices I've seen for them!
torinobradley Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I would have thought throwing in a second motor/transaxle in the back would have been a funner proposition. Always wanted to do a taurus with a second SHO Yamaha in the trunk. Wanna drop jaws on a few vettes???? I did an Escort with a transverse mounted blown 289 many moons ago. Didn't the Daytona ('80s version) also have a twin carbed 318 or some-such optional motor in the kit?
Joe Handley Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 The Daytona has some sort of V-8, never looked close enough though since I didn't give a rat's tookus about using that option.
