GrandpaMcGurk Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 How many of you guys purchase a model knowing exactly what you are going to do with it, right down to the paint color? I tend to buy 'em if they blow my skirt up, look at the parts, get a rough idea of what I want to do and then fly by the seat of my pants. I may be halfway through a build and some other modification strikes my fancy.......instead of doing the coulda' woulda' shoulda' gig I just dig back into it. What about you guys......are you able to plan your work and then work your plan?
SuperStockAndy Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 It takes me a couple minutes to figure it out, but after that I know exactl what I'm doing unless there are a few hangups.
highway Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I think in the almost 30 years that I've been building, that has one happened once (with the exception of armor, ships, movie or special edition vehicles that more or less make your mind up for you) in all that time. That was with the release of the 09 Challenger from Revell, I knew I wanted one Hemi Orange and I have been sticking straight to the plans. Now just if the rest of my builds were that easy, sometimes all that survives from a kit is the body, all the rest finds different homes and modifications!
Kaleb Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I just buy them, few of them actually have plans down to color.
Chuck Most Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 In a handful of cases, yes. For instance, when I first saw the Revell '69 COPO Nova, I knew I had to build one as a base-model beater car. But for the most part, if the subject matter strikes my fancy, and/or it's just a kit I'm familiar with and like, I'll buy it and worry about what to do with it later.
Joe Handley Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 On occasion, but that doesn't mean the model gets build anytime soon.
BKcustoms Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Sometimes I know, sometimes I don't. For example, I bought my 55 F-100 with plans to build it stock, but now It's well on the way to being a full kustom.
brad4321 Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Most of the time I build race cars that actually existed and thus the course of action is set. Otherwise I typically start off with a plan but allow myself to deviate when appropriate. If it's armor and I'm weathering, I have no idea what the final outcome will be. I just dive in and play it by ear as I go. If something breaks by accident .... it's battle damage!!
crazyjim Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Most times I have an idea in my head of what I want to do - then it becomes a matter of my hands trying to do what my mind is telling me, ie, lack of talent but big ideas.
Tony T Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Depends on the build...some have a way of taking a different path than the one we started out on! A few do end up as intended. Doesn't always come to me when I buy the kit, but usually when I sit down with it I know where I'd like it to go. Doesn't mean it follows!
Nitrozilla Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 I did build one model out of the box, but it's not your typical soccer mom's SUV........
Jantrix Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 To tell the truth, an idea/plan has to hit me just for me to buy the kit. That's why I haven't bought the Hudson or '48 Ford yet. When an idea stikes I'll get them. The only thing that springs to mind that I bought with a "I'll think of something" was the Revell '49 Merc.
