FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 First of all, why can't I post more than 3 pictures in a row w/ text?!?
FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 (edited) I had this all typed up in one entry, but nooooo..... now I have to make multiple posts. We all have stalled projects hidden away in the dark corners of our hobby areas. He's mine. This was conceived way back in the tail end of the 90's as the 2K`tona. Well, 2K came and went 11 years ago.... I guess I missed that deadline. This started life as the Revell Dodge Daytona kit that has been, er.... "modified" a bit. As part one, we'll start with the body, which has been pie-cut to a wedge shape for the planned open-wheeled roadster chassis. It's also going to be rear engined. All body modifications have been filled with a mixture of melted plastic runners from the Revell kit and liquid cement. The resulting "goop" was smeared on like bondo, and left to cure. About a week later I sanded it smooth without any ghosting of the former seams. There's no evidence of the side marker lights or seams after more than 10 yrs. And there are a few seams..... Obviously, after all this time I'm planning a few revisions..... Having unearthed this while cleaning the hobby room is giving me new ideas. Anyone else able to post a longer hidden fossil from their stash? C`mon...can you beat 11 yrs.? Edited December 4, 2011 by FASTBACK340
FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 Part two will be the engine. As a Mopar guy, I've seen more Hemi's than normal and, well.... they are starting to bore me. After a while 500-600 cubic inch engines start to look small. Here I built a neat what-if? Using 2 of the wonderful AMT pro street Coronets, I pirated 2 overhead cam Hemi's and made a V-12 by splicing them together. The plan was originally for four 4 BBl. carbs, but I'm thinking of maybe a modified Viper injection set up would work too. Want to speculate? Let's say we have 850 cubic inches.... well over 1,000 HP. It should be able to merge into traffic effortlessly.....
FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 Part three, the chassis. After watching the workmanship of Rommel, Randy, and John Teresi, I'm going to scrap my original frame and start fresh. The original frame was made from brass and was going to be fully operationally. I fabricated a functioning rack & pinion steering gear and was starting on the control arms w/ in board shocks. Now we'll start over. And I will be using one of those neat frame jigs Ken B shared with us. The rolling stock was a set of 1/18 die cast wheels from Georgia Pacific and the rims I was going to make. Ambitious? You bet. But back when I started this I was putting in about 30 hours a week at the bench and was on my game. It's going to be a few builds before I have ANY confidence in tackling this. But it IS waiting it's turn. Hopefully this will be my winter project next year. Or maybe sooner.... Now, can anyone top 11 yrs'? There MUST be some long dormant fossil lying around.....
DavidChampagne Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 WOW This should be good. Looking foward to updates.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Oh my, you need to get back and finish this project. The body is just screaming for paint and color!
FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 I debated posting this. Because I'm a big ball-joint buster when someone else is stalled (listening Randy & Rommel?), I figured the resulting replies will motivate me more. I'm real lazy today as I worked yesterday and played out last night with my band. I'm off Wed. and plan on getting that room ready. I promise.......
FASTBACK340 Posted December 4, 2011 Author Posted December 4, 2011 Oh my, you need to get back and finish this project. The body is just screaming for paint and color! Having the good Doctor's attention is a compliment. I'll try my best to get this thing going again. Believe me, I think about this stupid project more often than I'd care to admit. I know if I pull it off right it could be sensational... or get crushed

Foxer Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Only 11 years? .. you "just" started this one, then. My oldest is probably 16, but still in the same time frame. That frame looked cool .. why start over? It all looks good. Hoping to see more.
Custom Mike Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 This one is my "youngest" stalled project, AMT's '57 Chevy, I can't get the hood and trunk to match the body color. So after 3 attempts, it got boxed up... This one has been around since 1996 or so...I really need to get it back out now that my skills have caught up to my imagination... There are a few more, but I don't have any pics available...one of them dates back to 1995, so my oldest is only 16, I better slow down a bit!
FASTBACK340 Posted December 5, 2011 Author Posted December 5, 2011 Mike, sweet `57! Great color & wheel choice! Jef, nice Impala `vert! Post a picture of the actual car please. I too have a replica build planned. I've hoarded a bunch of `68 Barracuda annuals where one will hopefully resemble my car. That will be a while.... I have to get back in the saddle first. 16 yrs? Wow....

Your Dad ordered a nice ride!
crazyjim Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 Sorry, but I don't have any stalled projects. Before I open a box, I have a pretty good idea in my head of what I want to do and what color(s) I'll use for the interior/exterior. Once that box is opened, I keep on going until completion.

Jantrix Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 You guys need to get these stalled builds in our "Back on the Bench CBP", and get cracking on them.
Custom Mike Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 Sorry, but I don't have any stalled projects. Before I open a box, I have a pretty good idea in my head of what I want to do and what color(s) I'll use for the interior/exterior. Once that box is opened, I keep on going until completion. Jim, you're no fun! I need to be more like you, my problem is I get an idea, and my skills just can't quite pull it off yet...so back in the box it goes. My wife is wonderful at that, she's forced me to complete more projects than I ever have. Now if she could keep me from coming up with new ideas....
4bangen Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I've got more than a few. this one is a mustang I was working on a few years before I moved. I boxed it up and never started back on it. It's an 06 stang, blown 4.6l, and a bunch of body mods.
4bangen Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 my mark vii, I still need to finish. and lastly, my gone in 60 seconds Elanor. done dent for dent. one day I'll finish them.
Casey Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I have one one which dates back to '96, so going on 15 years now. I had started it when the Revell AG 1/16 '52 VW Kafer kit was first released, and it's just about to be re-issued, so maybe that's a sign I should get to work on it again. I actually thought I lost the model over the course of two moves, as I could not find it anywhere, and I knew I hadn't thrown it out-- it wasn't that bad. To make a long story short, I found it inside a suitcase (shows how often we travel), and I have done nothing to it since. In fact, I can't even find the pictures I took of it, so I'll have to take some new ones. Now that this project has a companion 1/16 Funny Car build, it may see the workbench soon.
surfjunke Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 G'Day Fastback, Sure am glad you brought the 2K'Tona back out. Awesome work so far & a lot of great ideas. The brass work on the frame is really fine . This should be an awesome ride. Please keep it going. The rest of you guys have some really cool "stalled" projects. I also have quite a few. This is from the Testors/Flintstone Screechosrus. These are also Tetors/Flintstone resin bricks. The Mecoholic This was a glue bomb from a friend. Dave Deal's Firebird.
