Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Oh my, all those corvettes just make me salivate over the new 62 that's coming out soon.
weasel Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 back in the day, there was one that ran around here called GrannyGoose....that was one bad a$$ Vette
Jantrix Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Okay guys, I've heard some gasser types referred to as Street Freaks. What does this moniker assume? That it's a street driven drag car or what? I'd call that AMC Javelin a street freak for sure. I'd be terrified to give that too much gas.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Oh man, and check out the small skate boards! HA. Great picture.
weasel Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 hey now, my first one had steel wheels....and no bow, just plank!!
Terry Sumner Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 The subject of the gasser I am now building...as accurately as I can...soon to be a WIP on this forum... Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki
Dr. Cranky Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Can't wait, Terry. I like the last picture with all the engine details. That gives me a few ideas.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 That's what attracts me about them too, Tim. For me they really embody everything about the 60s and 70s! It's amazing to think that during the times of such crazy social upheavals, lots of people were into this.
iBorg Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 The front were raised to aid weight transfer due to the lacking traction of the slicks. Most associations limited the crank centerline to be no more than 24 inches above the ground.
tooltas Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 same here i got a 51 chevy fastback thats get some gasser and little kustom
Qwit Pushin Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 (edited) Took a trip to the NHRA (Wally Parks) Museum back in 2009, primarily to see my favorite gasser of all time, the Stone, Woods & Cook Willys. Unfortunately, they were shooting a television commercial there that day, so it was close quarters which made picture taking a very tall order, but I did manage to get these shots (sans flash, as it wasn't cooperating that day). This thread's been great love the old images!! Edited December 17, 2011 by Qwit Pushin
Terry Sumner Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Is this the original car or a reproduction?
Draggon Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 (edited) The more i look at these the more i love them. I would love to have be around them back in the day. And to get a ride in one that would be like a dream come true. I had a friend that built a straght axle 56 Chevy around 1970-ish. It rode an handled like garbage, except in a straight line. But man, did it look cool. I bought a 50 Olds straight axle in 1974. To say the ride was rough is an understatemant. With todays techologly I think this is not a problem, but in the 70's holy guacamole, they were close to undriveable on the street. Edited December 18, 2011 by Draggon
Old Coyote Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I guess my favorite "gasser" would have to be my 1:1 1948 English Ford Thames ........... which was in fact an old gasser .......... took 5-1/2 years to convert into a street rod
Qwit Pushin Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Is this the original car or a reproduction? My understanding is that this is the original.
gasser59 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 John - that Thames is gorgeous and looks perfect in every way. It probably runs as good as it looks too. I see you left the keys in it, can I take it for a spin? I promise I'll be right back!!
Draggon Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Cant forget about the bugs. I had never seen the orange one till just now.
3men2s Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 (edited) Talking about bugs...did anyone read in the new issu of Hot Rod the reconstruction of the original lightning bug? interesting. I grew up watching the former lightning bug racing in Puerto Rico under Diego Febles care. Good memories of that classic gasser. http://blogs.hotrod.com/romance-with-rust-brings-back-a-legend-14699.html Edited December 19, 2011 by 3men2s
