Greg Myers Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 When I get this in pink, what does it mean? Why?
Greg Pugh Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I was wondering the same thing. I ran into this the other day.
Harry P. Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 It's probably an image file format that the forum can't display.

Casey Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 As Harry said, only certain types of file extensions are allowed- .jpg, .gif, etc. I have no idea which are allowed or not, but it looks like you figured out how to do it above. ^^^
Gregg Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Actually, I have set it to accept almost all types of images. I know I recently turned off animated GIF's, but I think that was it. Please let me know exactly what the image extension was. Thanks
Greg Myers Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 GIFs ? jpegs ? round pegs? I'm really not to sure where to begin to look.
sjordan2 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) The extension ID, in this case indicating different types of image files, is the abbreviation after the period. It's like having .doc at the end of a name of a Word file. Pic1.jpg Pic2.png Pic3.gif etc. When I drag the image from the link you provided to my desktop, it has the following file name, which should not be a problem: 6a00d83451f42569e201310fed1067970c-pi.jpg I uploaded it to Photobucket, copied the IMG code, and pasted it right here. The point is, when you're uploading, downloading or sending a file attachment by email, you should really make sure to include the correct extension at the end of the file name. Couldn't you convert that file into another format from Corel Draw? I can save in different formats from Photosmart, for example.

Yes, you can do that, but if the file is not in any .bmp compatible format, like .jpg, .jpeg, .gif etc. you cannot just change the file extension. You will need a conversion program. Most of the imaging softwares like Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, etc. do contain that functionality and allow you to save them in a 'common' format. As for linking image files from the internet, if they don't have a proper file format, like .jpg, .gif, etc. this forum will not allow to link them and throw that error. You can see this in the URL of the picture you want to link to (right click on the picture, select 'view image' and the picture will be shown in a new tab and you can see the URL in your browser address bar). If this URL does not end with a proper dot something file extension, you will get the error when you try to link to it.
Dave Ambrose Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Through some trial and error, I discovered that the forum software doesn't like special characters in file names. You need to stick with letters and numbers. No spaces allowed either. If you have any illegal characters in the file name, it will give you the "You are not allowed to use that extension in this community" message.

If you have any illegal characters in the file name, it will give you the "You are not allowed to use that extension in this community" message. That makes sense. When storing some of my Mac OSX files on an external hard drive or flash drive, I've had to go in and laboriously change the filenames because they can't be copied. And it's important to me to get the filenames right because I share them with Windows users (much more sensitive to illegal characters). According to one source, the following characters are "illegal" on Windows filenames: "The Windows operating system can use two different file systems, Protected-Mode File Allocation Table (FAT) file system and the New Technology File System (NTFS). The two systems have much in common, but the characters permitted in a file or folder name may differ. In the conventions listed below, it is true for both systems unless otherwise specified. Specifically there are cases where NTFS does not have the limitations (see note below). The following characters are invalid as file or folder names on Windows using NTFS: / ? < > \ : * | ” and any character you can type with the Ctrl key In addition to the above illegal characters the caret ^ is also not permitted under Windows Operating Systems using the FAT file system The only illegal character for file and folder names in Mac OS X is the colon “:” File and folder names are not permitted to begin with a dot “.” (However, when moving my Mac files, I have found that "&" is also illegal. In general, I follow the naming rules for Windows.) And once again, don't leave spaces between characters in filenames. I'm sure Dave can add to this or clear up stuff. If the Forum allows PDF than you can post it as an editable file. some of the forums I go to allow PDF...not sure here
Greg Myers Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 Thank you everyone. I thought I was doing something naughty( Ooops, wrong board).I've got it figured out now. and while I'm at it, Merry Christmas to everyone.
Monty Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I just wasted a ton of time trying to get this thing to accept one of 7 different images of a 1:1 '72 Cutlass convertible and who knows how many different pictures of the Revell Cutlass Supreme kit on one of my recent posts. If this thing could read my mind, it would reach out and slap me for what I think it ought to go do to itself.
