ranma Posted December 22, 2011 Author Posted December 22, 2011 If I had that kind of money I'd buy a real car . a 57 chevy and still have alot leftover.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Why buy new when you can drive used in style!
uncle potts Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Why buy new when you can drive used in style! Amen Cranky!
Rob Z Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I simply love my '98 S10 with 140,000 mi. and my '95 Buick with 135,000 mi. only paid $500 for the Buick 5 years ago and she still purrs like a kitten...
Qwit Pushin Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 If I had that kind of money I'd buy a real car . a 57 chevy and still have alot leftover. That's exactly how I look at it! If I spend that kind of dough on a classic, ('57 Chevy), I don't lose thousands just driving the thing off the lot. Matter of fact I probably make money if my bargaining skills are in top form. I'd also enjoy the drive that much more!!
Rob Hall Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I prefer the reliability, safety features and cabin electronic goodies of modern cars. I tend to buy new and drive 'em for 10 years or more....
Austin T Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 If your suffering from Stickerish shockagus then search craigslist.
62rebel Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 HAH! you should look at our local (Charleston SC) Craigslist. EVERYBODY is selling 100pointer cars at showroom prices... or so they think. rusted out $8tboxes with blown engines and toasted transmissions for dollars on the penny. i'd rather keep my Falcons and my F150 running than indebt myself for more than my house cost for a "new" car and then have to deal with warranty issues and depreciation and outright crooked dealing with dealers. gadgetry and bells and whistles be d**ned.
jphillips1970 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Buy and drive them - I still have a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda with 45,000 miles/number matching/2nd owner car - Not as safe as a new one but I can see the motor and change the plugs when needed without a computer - A classic like the 57 Chevy - Restore/drive and enjoy those cars of yesterdays -
Terry Sumner Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I'm hoping my 2003 F-250 will last me the rest of my life! No way I can afford a brand new F-250 now...
Rob Hall Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I've put 135k on my '00 Grand Cherokee that I bought new--keeping it as a backup daily driver and for winter driving up in the mountains..it's been pretty reliable over all. My new daily driver--an '11 Caddy STS--has a bit over 4k miles now, hope to get 10 years out of it.
Joe Handley Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 I kinda wish it was easier to get more basic trim packages with things like manual windows, doorlocks, ect but still get the better drivetrain packages.
Harry P. Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Carmakers make what sells. Almost nobody wants manual windows and locks, so the manufacturers don't make them. They wouldn't sell. American car buyers love gadgets, gizmos and cupholders.

True enough...I love 'em loaded...haven't bought a car w/ manual windows in 25 years... my Jeep has heated seats and mirrors, my Caddy one ups that with heated and cooled seats. Regular cupholders, though..I'd like to see heated and chilled cupholders as an option. Edited December 22, 2011 by Rob Hall
moparmagiclives Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 (edited) There is a reason why "They dont make them like they used tah" as they say. There is a video on youtube somewhere that shows gm crashing a 59 chev I believe with a 09 or 10 malibu. Shows how far they have come...not so much the "tin cans" people make new cars out to be. Here is the crash video Edited December 22, 2011 by moparmagiclives

ZombieHunter26 Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 Looks like that 59 had been sitting a while, and just painted up to look nice. the rust flying out of that thing when it crashed was a good sign of some pretty rough rust damage. kind of an unfair fight, like putting a 60+ year old boxer against a 28 year old MMA champ... it just doesn't add up. They should have run a '59 off the assembly line just for that test. I'm betting the '09 was brand new... Then again it was a chevy... if it were ford... i think the old ford would have done a -little- more damage to the malibu. But that's just my favoritism speaking.
Rob Hall Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 (edited) Should have gotten a Chrysler I thought about the Chrysler 300..esp. in the brown color. Drove a couple rental 300s this year. I really like the Caddy.. Who knows, may change my mind in a few years and trade. I plan to get a new fun car in the next couple years..the Challenger SRT8 or Mustang Boss 302 are high on my list. We have a customer/friend at the shop with a sweet tooth for fast cars, Hes bought a SRT8 Challenger, Camaro, Viper, SS T-blazer but I think the funnest car he has in his stable is his 2006 99k mile 6 speed Caddy CTS-V, Its got just the right amount of broke in feeling in the seats and it really like to be spanked.

The fewer gadgets there are, the fewer things there are to go wrong when it starts getting old (now when I start getting that old........) I've had enough interior electrical issues related to wiring on my current Jeep to wish it was possible to find a basic LE or Sport XJ with the same transfercase and maybe a tape player instead of a full on model.
Chuck Most Posted December 22, 2011 Posted December 22, 2011 You can still find the 'less than loaded' versions out there... thing is you just have to live near a high volume dealer. There are a couple dealers 'near' me (less than one hour), Vanderhyde Ford and Cook Chevrolet, who are pretty well known for stocking a little bit of everything. Want a pickup with manual windows and a bench seat? Or an Impala without a leather interior? Or anything with a manual trans? If they don't have it in stock, they can ususally get one within 48 hours. Even so, nobody EVER pays full sticker price for a vehicle anyway- there are almost always rebates and incentives going on.
