Over-priced? Maybe. Fair return of value for investment? Yes!

If it's a fair return of value for the investment, it can't be over-priced. If it was over-priced the return of value for the investment couldn't possibly be fair.

Being that Porsche and Tamiya are both family names I think it's obvious that the products should also be spoken of the same way as the families pronounce their own names.

On a similar note, 'Willys' is pronounced 'Willis', as in 'Bruce Willis' or 'What you talkin' 'bout, Willis'. And there's no apostrophe, either. ;)

Well I got two Tamiya steaks in the mail today.

1966 VW Beetle

1966 VW Karmann Ghia

Gonna be a big change from the bolonga sandwich kits I'm used to building. This is supposed to be funny.

I have never built a Tamiya kit before.

Look for threads in the near future.bigtim.

how about the correct pronunciations of,

Hasegawa

Fujimi

Aoshima

and Kyosho?

Having lived in Japan for over 8 years, I can confirm that the correct pronunciation is ta-mee-ya. My wife is from Japan, and she got tired of translating things for me when we first got married. She told me that if i wanted to know what it said, I had to learn to read it. I taught myself to read and write both hiragana and katakana, and I'm starting to get the hang of kanji. The best way to explain how to pronounce Japanese words is to break it down in groups of consenants and vowels because that is how the hiragana and katakana characters are structured...kanji characters can be a single or group of those characters ;)

Dave...to answer your question:

Ha-say-ga-wa

Hoo-jee-me (most native Japanese speakers pronounce Fu as hoo, but Foo is also acceptable)

Aa-oh-she-ma

Kyo-sho (the k and y are combined and not pronounced separately) I get scolded all the time by my wife when my southern ohioneese kicks in and I say Key-yo-to instead of kyo-to, or toy-yo-ta instead of to-yo-ta

OK, how about Daewoo, then? I think it's not day-wooh but day-woh.

Kia is key-ah, right?

And Hyundai? I think it's yun-die, right?

And speaking of Porsche, I noticed that most non-German speakers also pronounce the most prominent maker of the wheels wrong.

Fuchs is pronounced foox.

Oh, and my first name is not pronounced like the religion. Its kris-tea-un.

Is that a regional thing? I have never heard it pronounced other than "Willies"

"Willis" (as in Bruce Willis) is (and always has been) the correct pronunciation.

There are a lot of regional mispronunciations in the US... "Willies," "mater," "asterick," "nucular," etc.

• A Japanese sushi chef once told me that you're always safe in pronouncing Japanese words if you never emphasize any individual syllable. Just use a flat monotone.

• My survey of Japanese modeling videos seems to indicate that the normal pronunciation of Tamiya is TAHM-YAH, with the 'i' not pronounced at all.

This guy seems to get it closest to the way I hear it from Japanese builders. Again, no emphasis on any particular syllable.

I say it as Tahm-yah. As for Willys, I say it as Will-ees since before I heard the "correct" way to pronounce it, I'd never heard the name Willy produced as will-ih. Oh, and I also say Legos instead of Lego bricks, since I like to go against the establishment.
