Ramfins59 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 OK... Either you just got home with that new kit you've been dying to get, or, it just got delivered to your front door. Do you just plunk it on top of the pile of other unbuilt kits in your stash..? Or, do you rip open the shrink wrap and inspect the body, the parts, the chrome tree and the instructions..?? Do you leave the shrink wrap on the kit box until you pick it to work on..?? It always amazes me how many people will jump right on building a brand new kit as soon as they get their hands on it. I, personally, will not drop what I am or have been working on to start on that new kit, but I am most likely in the minority on this issue. What do YOU do...???
jeffs396 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I sometimes open them up in the hobby shop or at least in the car! Can't wait to check out the parts, looking at the level of detail. Gotta see how the wheels/tires look, most of the time do a quick mock-up also
plasticbutcher Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Open it up check it out, tell the wife its not for her stash, hide it in my small stash, tell wife its MINE again, and check every day to make sure wife didn't creativly aquire it for her stash, till I can figure how I want to build it
Harry P. Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 First thing: rip it open and check it out. Even if I'm not going to build it right away, it still gets an immediate "inspection"....
Austin T Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 First thing: rip it open and check it out. Even if I'm not going to build it right away, it still gets an immediate "inspection".... Agreed. Every time that shrink wrap comes off it feels like Christmas.
martinfan5 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 First thing: rip it open and check it out. Even if I'm not going to build it right away, it still gets an immediate "inspection".... Couldn't said it better myself, I like to say I am like kid getting a new toy, ok for the most part with most kits
Chuck Most Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I don't even get home much of the time, I'm known to rip off the shrink wrap once I get out to the car, or even on the hobby shop counter if there happen to be a couple of other people there curious as to what comes in the kit.
cruz Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I will certainly take a close look even if I am not building it for a while. Most of the time I google info on the real car and add some notes for future ideas on how to approach certain issues that might come up. I also remove some parts on the trees to make sure I accommodate the model a little better in the box avoiding any warping of the body and large parts. On occasions, I have decided on building it because it generated enough interest.
Bobdude Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 The shrink wrap comes off and even though I haven't glued the engine halves together,I consider that model started.
martinfan5 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I have started now, even if I dont plan on starting the model for awhile, I am now getting the bodys primered and ready for paint, I have primed three so far.
Haubenschild Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I rip off the plastic and pray to god that I wont screw it up
JamesW Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 For the most part I open EVERY kit I get, unless it's one that I have many of. For instance, when I got the Italeri Pete 378 I waited a WHOLE DAY before I ripped the plastic off. I couldn't wait any longer. LOL
Jantrix Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I invariably do open it to check out how good/bad the kit it is. This helps me figure what I'm going to find to improve it. I don't start it until I have my plan firmly in mind. That may take years.
tabsscale1 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 It really depends on if i have the kit in my stash alreay. If it is one of the latest kit out I usually open itup and see what options it has . If it is something I want to build right away then I will start on it other than that I will put it in the stash. If it is one iI have alreay then it just goes into the stash.. I tend to buy about a dozen or so of some of the better kits out there that way I have some for other projects.
SSNJim Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 As soon as I get to the car, the shrink wrap comes off, and an inspection of the contents occurs. I look at all the sprues, decals, tires and what not, then read the directions, comparing them to the sprues. I'll spend ten minutes or so "grokking" the kit, then head home. If it is something I have an idea for, I'll get started on it right away. Otherwise, it goes into my stash. For example, I bought an AMT 62 Thunderbird two hours ago, and the body is already hacked up for my next soon-to-be-stalled project.
Erik Smith Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I open it up. I even open new kits when I already have another one that is open.
Ben Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I like to open the kit and inspect each and every piece to see how well it's detailed or if there are any flaws. I then place the decals in between the instructions and if the tires are not already in their own plastic bag, I'll place them in one so they can't touch anything. I then try to find somewhere to put it with the rest of the kits I hope to get to eventually! LOL
XJ6 Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Open for Inspection....put it on the shelves with......All The Others...
Olskoolrodder Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 First thing: rip it open and check it out. Even if I'm not going to build it right away, it still gets an immediate "inspection".... Agreed. Every time that shrink wrap comes off it feels like Christmas. Yep,yep, what they said
Jdurg Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 Open it up, make sure every part is in there and there are no major "fixes" that need to be done, then use my sprue cutters to remove any sprue from the body and give it a nice sanding with fine grade sandpaper to remove any mold lines and see where any putty needs to be applied. Once putty has then been applied and allowed to cure, I sand the body down and apply a primer coat on it in order to ensure that it is fully cured and dried when I eventually get around to painting the body.
Scuderia Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I am trying to build in order so i dont have too much 'going' at once. But as soon as a new one arrives i inspect it, throw the chrome tree in purple and put it in the pile and wait for it to come up on my list.
BKcustoms Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I usually open it in the parking lot and make sure it is all there and nothing is broken. And then I always end up painting the body within the next week or so (unless its a highly modified project) and finally, I put it together a few months later

Thats the first thing I do too, even if I am going to start it now or later, put the chrome parts in bleach
High octane Posted March 25, 2012 Posted March 25, 2012 I only open about a third of my unbuilt kits so I usually just toss my latest purchase on the "pile."
