Harry P. Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 This may be old news to some, but I just read it in the latest Hemmings Muscle Machines mag. Chrysler is bringing back the 'cuda! It won't be a Plymouth, but will be built under the new Chrysler "SRT" brand (which includes the new Viper). Details are still sketchy, but according to industry insiders it's definitely going to happen. Engine is supposedly going to be a blown 6.2L HEMI. And Chrysler has filed with the US Patent and Trademark office for the "cuda" name (but didn't they already hold the rights to that name???). The new 'cuda is going to be smaller than the current Challenger, but it's not clear yet whether the car will be based on a shortened Charger platform or a completely new platform. Also unclear is whether or not the 'cuda will replace the Challenger in the Chrysler lineup. The new 'cuda will appear next year as a 2014 model. So say the industry "insiders."
martinfan5 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Well thats news to me, I thought I heard rumors, but just that, rumors, looking forward to seeing how its going to look
Scuderia Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Interesting. I wonder if it'll look like the 'Cuda resin transkits floating around the net, only on a 1:1 scale lol. But I digress, yeah that sounds pretty good. Can't wait to see some designs on it for sure.
moparmagiclives Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 If I remember right, they were talking about a car like the viper but with a V8. Maybe this will be it. I think it will be pointless to have another V8 two door car. They havent had so much luck with the 6.2 Challenger. I think that market fuzzed out when the Challenger first came out...not to many more looking to buy. Dont get me wrong, who wouldnt want one. But not much use with three little ones and a 50 mile commute to work.
Harry P. Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 If I remember right, they were talking about a car like the viper but with a V8. Maybe this will be it. No, that was the "entry-level" Viper that's been rumored. The new 'cuda is a whole other thing.
Dragracer Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) I'm glad to hear it, would love to see the "Cuda come back, retro-style of the 1970! Just put in a search for 2014 Chysler "Cuda, & checked out the pics, looks like the new Camaro only meaner, 1970 style nose & taillights. I think it looks pretty cool! Harry P. Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 I'm glad to hear it, would love to see the "Cuda come back, retro-style of the 1970! From what I read, it won't be as "retro" as the Challenger, but will have several Barracuda "styling cues." Sort of like the latest Charger, I guess. Not really retro, but with a few familiar styling elements thrown in. 'Why?' comes to mind.... "Why Not?" also comes to mind...
Jon Cole Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I suspect this will mean the end to the Challenger. But I would rather look forward to the potential of a new 'Cuda. The one thing we can count on, is change.
george 53 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 HOw much smaller can they make it? the new chally's backseat is even SMALLER than the old ones, and it's a bigger car to boot! Don't see them bringin a new car out just for the name, heck, todays kids don't even know what a Cuda is, I don't believe. Would it actually be shorter than a Challenger? Caz THAT'S a big car!
The70judgeman Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I missed that one. Which issue is that article in. Might be news for my wife. Cuda's are one of her favorite cars.

George, remember that back in the '70s the 'cuda was also smaller than the Challenger. Not a lot smaller, but smaller. Wheelbase was a few inches less for 'cuda than Challenger. My guess is that will be the case with the new 'cuda... just a bit smaller than the Challenger. I missed that one. Which issue is that article in. Might be news for my wife. Cuda's are one of her favorite cars. The latest issue (June 2012). Just got it today.
The70judgeman Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 June issue...don't have it yet, thanks Harry. Sounds like a trip to the hobby store tomorrow for me....oh darn!
george 53 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Yeah, it was smaller, Harry, I had freinds who had some, but if there's no room in the back seat of the Chally, WHERE'S the people gonna sit in a Cuda?? If it is a shorter car, then they'll kill ANY legroom for backseat passengers. The Challys backseat is only good for kids! I'm 5'4 and it was even too claustropobic to ME!!! Still, it WOULD be nice to see a 'Cuda again!
Dragline Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Brilliant! Can we see it? Harry, no pics? Pity............ Bob

Pity............ Bob None that I can find. We'll have to wait and see...
george 53 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Yeah,Harry, not anymore at least. But even the early versions DID have a sit able back seat. I mean not EVERY Cuda Camaro and Mustang back then were bought by young folks. My buddys parents drove a fastback Mustang and another buddy's Dad had a Z-28, and they were FAR from bein kids. But like I said it would be nice ta see the name back again!
moparmagiclives Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) Hold on, Are we talking about the "Cuda" coming back or the "Barracuda" comming back as an SRT brand car ? Allpar has some stuff about the Barracuda coming on an Alfa Romeo platform, but I dont see anything on the Cuda. Either way, I dont see another V8 car comming around. Other then very limited #s. espo Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 A Cuda would be cool. As an aside, I read in the business section of the paper this morning abour Chrysler and Fiat. As you may know Fiat bought controling intrest in Chrysler a few years ago as they were going under. As of the first quarter of 2012, Chrysler posted greater earnings than Ford or GM. In fact Fiat lost millions in europe but posted several million in earnings and an over all profit based on Chrysler's earnings. So if it had not been for Chrysler, Fiat would have been in real trouble. Just food for thought.

I hadn't heard that Fiat was down at the same time, but it had been mentioned that their profits hadn't been this good in 13 years..........interesting that was about the time Daimler took over that their sales started to go down......... shucky Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 If I recall a few weeks back on autoblog there was a video interview with the head of SRT and lurking in the background was said to be the concept 'Cuda. I didn't watch it because I didn't have the time but this thread reminded me of it.
