Kind of a quickie update this time around...............The body finally has some color! I spent some time airbrushing Future Floor Wax onto the bare plastic, so the hot paint won't craze it----and the results are so far so good!

Here's a pic of the body in primer...............

At the last GSL I picked up a can of this stuff and figured I'd try it out ................I think I may have found a new favorite primer! It dried very quickly, is an actual lacquer (lacquer thinner cut it very well for airbrushing!) and it sanded beautifully. I hope I can find this primer locally...............doing a search on the 'net tells me it may be sold at Grainger's which is a couple miles from me. :)

The color coats went on smoothly and after letting the body sit in the dehydrator for about 8 hours, I then clearcoated the whole works with my trusty Tamiya X-22. In fact, I clearcoated the body parts this morning and took the pics about an hour ago. The body still needs some time yet in the dehydrator, then it's on to the task of rubbing out and polishing everything! With the angular lines this thing has, I'll have to be extra careful around those edges............................

I'll have some time over this weekend to get more done since I won't be able to go to the September Showdown tomorrow, ;) but I've taken a personal day Monday so at least I have a three day weekend! :)

Thanks for followin' along!

Edit: Okay, Fotki doesn't want to play along with super large pics now..............so I had to edit the primer pic photo so it'll stay on the board. :(

That color is fantastic Bill, always a pleasure seeing your builds come to life.... 8 hours in my dehydrator , I would have a blob..even with the deflector I built inside and added relief holes in the top, at 105* 1 1/2 to 2 hours max for me...does your dehydrator rotate?

No, my dehydrator doesn't rotate. It has the multi layer setup that you can buy extra trays if needed. I have a temp control right on the top of the lid on mine.

I suspect the thermostat in yours may be going faulty....................mine is set at a constant 105° and I've never had a lick of trouble. ;)

Hey Bill, too bad you will not be making it to the showdown tomorrow man, I guess this will make a lot of people happy. Anyway, the Magnum is coming out fabulous. Did you say you are airbrushing that primer or using it straight out of the can? Looks like a good product.Hope to at least see you at our next CPMCC meeting............ ;):(:)

dont know how I missed this thread but, if anyone needs reference photos of a magnum, I drive a 2.7l v6 model company car everyday that i can get pics of....

i realize this may be a bit late for you Bill....

Cruz, I decanted it into an airbrush jar first.....(you see those crazy lookin' funnel cups! B) ) The can has that wacky fan spray pattern which I hate, not to mention I can't control how fast the spray comes out of the can! B)

Well, what do you know! Bill and I are working on the same model at the same time. I just started building the Magnum a couple of days ago. I'm planning a simple build with just a few extras.

Bill, did you find any good photo collections of the engine online somewhere? I can't locate much.

Hi Paul! Great minds think alike! The only SRT-8 engine photo I could come up with online was the one I posted above in another response. I have a Dodge brochure which has the engine "in the buff".............but that's it. I have a bunch of pics of the garden variety Hemi engine, but they're a but different externally than the 6.1L.

Maybe you can try eBay for some other SRT-8 engine pics------that's where I got the one above. If you need some engine bay pics of the regular Hemi (they're the same as the SRT-8's bay) drop me a PM with your email addy and I can send 'em to you.

I'm finally on the downside of building this beast................The paint had given me some fits especially on the roof where it counts. I had to sand it down a couple times and reshoot it to make it just so.

My dilemma now is regarding the wheels. While I'm not a big fan of chromed wheels, the chromed rims on this one look kinda cool!

So the question I've been asking myself is this..............To Bling or not To Bling? I'm leaning towards stripping the chrome and repaint in Aclad Chrome like the 'Vette................but hmmmmmm.........

Anyway, here are a few pics of what's been going on..........

PA021883-vi.jpgPA021884-vi.jpgPa021885-vi.jpg

The sunroof had a "tunneled" appearance to it................I trimmed the border around it and made it sit a bit more flush with the roofline. Now to add some kind of "weatherstripping" around it per the 1:1. :o I may paint the molded in ridge on the roof, or use some electrical tape trimmed out.

Bumpers and wheels are just mocked up for now.........the front tires won't be that fender scraping! I want to also do some more rubbing and polishing out around the fender arches and sides.

Hopefully by next weekend or so this will be all done and ready to put on the shelf! ;) I'm back on night shift now, so who knows how my enthusiasm level will be until I get back into the swing of things.

Stay tuned!

AWWWW, Come on! You know I like the front tires that fender scraping!!! ;):rolleyes::blink:

Looking super, Bill. You should leave the wheels plated. They do look great that way. Besides, you can use it for an excuse to be lazy! :o

Are you going to the Nov. meeting? I'd love to see it there!

I'm not sure right now Jonathan. I have to take each meeting on a month to month basis right now, due to work if there's overtime or not.

Also in November there's the LIARS Show coming up which I haven't been to in years..............I may try to get to that this year, and I think it's the weekend following our meeting.

Bill, if you like the wheels bright, but not that bright, I might suggest a coat of Acryl semigloss clear. They then look like polished/clearcoated aluminum wheels, not chrome plated. The scale appearance is great, and better than Alclad II. Brush some on a chrome sprue to see the effect; I'm perfectly happy brushing it on as it is self-leveling. Airbrushing should also work.

Hey Bill, I would go with Alclad on those wheels, they don't look too bad in chrome but after seeing the way the Vette came out I think it would be a wise choice, very nice work as usual with this one B) I am also thinking of going to the LIARS show if nothing else comes up, I have not been there in a while myself..............
