Does anyone remember the costs of the 1/8 scale kits from the 60's? The original releases of the Monogram and lindberg kits. They had to be rediculously low by todays standards. Was "Grit" the magazine you could sell for prizes, some of the prizes being large scale kits?

I had a bunch of them back in the day and while I can't remember for sure I think they were about 20 bucks. I used to get them for birthdays and Christmas.

My dad bought me a Big T for Christmas 1962 and I believe it was either $9.98 or $10.98.I think my Big Deuce bought in 1964 was in the same price range.

I worked in a discount store in the Chicago area. I bought three or four Monogram Yellow versions of the Big Deuce for $ 5.95. This would have been 1966-67. These were new still sealed BTW.

No problem, as long as you're ok making $3 an hour...

Yeah, I think something like 100 bucks a week was a very decent salary back then.

At the above mentioned discount store I was employed for a whopping $1.66 an hour. Of course I could go to Carm's in Berwyn and get a huge Italian beef sandwich, fries, and a small coke for $.45!

I remember one of McDonald's big advertising campaigns from the 70s... burger, fries and a Coke and you get change back from your dollar.

Wow, times have changed.

In Monograms 1964 catalog they have the Big T, Big Rod, Big Tub, and the Big Drag listed as $10.98 ea. I just ended a 15 year quest this week, and finally got an original Big Drag, let me tell ya.....inflation really set in.....

Here in the Great White North I seem to recall that a standard 1/24 was two bucks and the Deuce was twelve, a sum that was way out of reach, had to hope for a christmas present. Actualy, it never came!

The Big T came out in the summer of '63, whopping pricetag of like $12, IIRC.

I remember my grandma getting the grit paper but do not remember anything about getting prize for selling them. Jon I know you and I were lucky to get the amout of models we built together in the 60's.I still have a few from then.I wish you would rebuild the Corvair V8 you you built back then. It was way ahead of its time for back then. Keep on building my friend.

Original retail on the Big Deuce was $14.98.

I think the Big Deuce has been re-issued five or six times, but it sure would be nice to see it all returned to original, including the '60s instruction booklet:

Wow, thanks for posting these really neat photos, I think we all agree that box art both new and old is a very appealing part of our hobby. J.D.

Hey up there there in O H I O. I just cant decide on how I want to rebuild the 'Vair, but it will happen. Thanks for your memories regarding Grit. Boys Life, among others, was the one I recall that advertised Grit along with the prize incentives like thimble drome cars and the Visible V-8.

Harry brings up an interesting point here.....I bought my first Big T when they came out, it was around seven bucks and change.....at first glance you might think that's dirt cheap what with being able to buy a gallon of gas for less that a quarter ( and that was for Sunoco 200 octane).

Well everything's relative folks...you have to consider that a forty hour work week brought home (after taxes) 60 bucks or so.

Try raising a family, buying a house and car, food, clothes etc. on that amount of income and then tell me that seven bucks for a model is dirt cheap.......get my drift?
