502 Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 (edited) I went to Hobby Lobby today and this was on clearance for $14 so I had to buy it. I plan on having this done for Derby City Shootout on the 28th of this month. This is going to be a rat rod style build. The body will be rough looking but the internals will be nice. I am using the wheels from a chevelle wagon. I am considering cutting up the other 2 wheels to combine with the rear wheels so they are deeper but I havent decided yet. In the last pic its just a rough mock up as you can see but its what it should look like. I dont have pics yet but I have already modified the rear suspension to sit lower. I didnt think the tires were going to work but they barely squeezed in there. I hope to have the suspension done tonight so I will get some more pics. Edited July 15, 2012 by 502
cobraman Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Ya, that will look cool. Does that kit have woodgrain decals or do you have to paint the wood ?
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Oh yeah. I just love a ground scraping woody. Gonna be good.
502 Posted July 15, 2012 Author Posted July 15, 2012 It has decals for the woodgrain but the plastic has a grain texture so you could paint it if you wanted.
BOSWELL891 Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Looks great im going to that show also hope to see it there
Bartster Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 l love this kit. l have a very modified ground scraper almost completed & another kit-bash still in the planning stages. l'll be watching this one! Bart.
Guest Darkside Customs Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 Definitely cut up a second set of rear rims... I've done that before and looks so much better IMO
sportandmiah Posted July 15, 2012 Posted July 15, 2012 I just bought that too at Hobby Lobby yesterday...you can't beat $14.00.
502 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 I started painting tonight. Like I said this will be a rat rod style build so I will be sanding the body to bring the other colors in the spots that would have the most wear on them. The top will be flat black so I will tape it off and spray it but the wood will be done by brush. It will all be aged pretty good once its finished. I will be painting the wheels to look like coys matte finish.
Pat Minarick Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 If you got one the front axle from the Garbage Truck works great on these , I think the Beer Wagon has the same axle too.
502 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 Thanks guys and that green wont be shiny for long.
502 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) I started sanding on this side, still needs some work though. Theres a couple places I got down to the plastic but Im going to go back and fix those spots. Im gonna add a little more black in some spots and I might put a little bit of white in some places. crazyjim Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Oh my heart. My heart. It was so Shiny :) . Nice project. Keep it going.
Bartster Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Fascinating! l like watching these weathered builds, & actually did a couple as a kid. l've started a couple recently, but after spending my entire adult life trying to get rid of rust on 1:1 projects, it's hard to let go & rust something away, lol. But l do admire & like what you're doing here. Please continue. Bart.
502 Posted July 16, 2012 Author Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) I got this side about done and I like it alot more because of the orange. When I first sprayed it I thought I sprayed too much which is why there is less in all the other areas but I think it turned out better. This is actually my first attempt at this so this build is a learning experiment for me. The wood and top will be done tonight. Edited July 16, 2012 by 502
