mnwildpunk Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I'll be working away on a couple different pieces and I'll set one down but when I go to pick it back up it is nowhere to be found. Grrr. Drives me crazy!!!
JamesW Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Get yourself some of the lids from Kool-Aid canisters(Country Time Lemonade, coffee canister etc.) Set your parts in those. Less of a chance of them rolling off your bench.
cobraman Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 That has happened to me on ocassion. But I'm old and it's to be expected ! : )
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 This happens to me frequently, but I always end up finding the part EXACTLY where I put it. Amazing.

They actually make pretty handy little containers for such a use, and of course I always have several on hand.
Guest Johnny Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I've had times when working with small pieces and the pop out of the tweezeer or clamp and I lose them, only to find them later on after I gave given up, IN MY BEARD!!!
Brizio Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I had this problem too... On the model I'm current building, I built some carburetor parts, and I lost one of them... I rebuilt it, and after I found the part I lost...
Mercman Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The Wally world store has plastic pencil boxes that are large enough to store all sorts of parts on sale now for back to school. I think they are around $0.50.
DanielG Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 do do do do, do do do do, you are entering another dimension...
slusher Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 l keep a folded small towel to set small parts on or what l am working on and l have not lost anything since. if l am not working on it l put it in a box lid..
tubbs Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 the real sourse of the problem..... having a work area that is 1/100 the size of the actual bench you are working at because we never clean it off!! i do that with my x-acto knives - hence i have about 10 of them.
ZTony8 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 The parts hide in plain sight. However, with my aging eyes, it's not so plain. And I think that sometimes the parts get up and migrate to a different place just to play tricks on me. To counter that I sometimes will put the parts in trays that I've kept from take out meals. The trays are a nice depth and they have snap lids to prevent spillage should I accidently knock them over.

I actually misplaced 2 colletts for my dremel. 2 of the EXACT SAME ONE'S. The only one's I NEEDED and couldn't find them. Had to buy a new one. Funny thing is, I have a case I keep all my dremel stuff in, and they still managed to run away.
2000-cvpi Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I lost a sprue clipper, two sanding sticks and a small bottle of CA glue once. I used a old kit box to hold them and after two weeks of looking for them I found the box back on one of my kit storage shelves. My wife saw the box on the floor and put it back on the shelf. I had bought another sprue cutter the same day I found my old pair.

So true Tubbs. Modeling has to be the only hobby where we not only scale down the cars we build, we also scale down our work bench. I have a 2 1/2ft X 5ft work bench with about a 1ftx1ft area that i can build on right now. Maybe about time to clear off some of the projects that haven't moved in a long time.
mnwildpunk Posted August 1, 2012 Author Posted August 1, 2012 I think I have a workbench goblin that uses model parts and tools to build a nest
disabled modeler Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I have that problem all the time...must be a gremlin building something really cool here somewhere?
Dr. Cranky Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I hear you, this is a problem that frustrates me too, but I keep my parts in plastic containers while at the bench. It helps.
Guest Johnny Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Who was it that used to market that big apron that fastened to the table or desk???
Olskoolrodder Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 The other day I was looking for one of my masking tape rolls, looked all throught the workshop, moved kit boxes, looked under the bench, looked in every room in the house, tore the van up (thinking maybe I'd seen it in that box that never got unpacked when we moved this past month-I KNEW I'd seen it since moving...),drove all the way out to the mini-storage rental to look because I found I'd taken that box out of the van afterall-couldn't find it,so I drove (while still out) to Wal-Mart to pick some up,got back home and as I walked into the workshop, sitting stacked together on top of 3 displayed builds there sat both the blue and the green rolls I'd been searching for...... There was this one time (not at bandcamp-not model related either) the Wife was with me as I was hauling freight somewhere up the east coast (Jersey,I think),coming up to a toll booth in 5 miles,I couldn't find my hat (hair was a mess, and I was that vein,LOL)...who was dumber? ME for not knowing it was on my head,or HER for looking right at me when I asked to help find it,and then she looked feverously until I realised it was in fact, still on my head?
