revshag Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 My father-in-law recently got back into HO model trains. He got this Bug for the display. It's an 1:87 scale diecast. He owned a Bug back in the day and asked me to repaint it to replicate his 1:1. Somewhere in the conversation I mentioned using fingernail polish. He found the nail polish and he says it's almost an exact match to the way he remembers it. I know green was a popular color in the 60's but it's scary to think you can find this color in nail polish! Anyway, here's the before as I had disassembled but not yet stripped it: After stripping the paint, I polished it with 000 steel wool and then airbrushed right over the metal. I BMF'd the lights and trim (if you thought it was a pain in 1/25, try it in 1/87!) I've been in a bit of a building funk so it felt good to get this knocked out pretty quick. Here's the finished product:
Foxer Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 That's really good looking for an HO model! Nice job.
peter31a Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Wow! That little, little Beetle came out great!
uncle potts Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 1/87th scale can be difficult, but also very fun and rewarding. And a real change of pace. I love them. Yours turned out very nice, very well done.
GeeBee Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 WOW, nice rebuild ..... I built the 1/24th Tamiya Beetle and that was bad enough doing the BMF, I really wouldn't want to try it on a 1/87th one ....
MicroNitro Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 Love it, Do your eyes hurt after that one?
Country Boy Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 VW's are tiny to begin with. But that small........... very nice job indeed.
revshag Posted November 6, 2012 Author Posted November 6, 2012 Hey Guys, Thanks for the compliments. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Should exceed my father-in-law's expectations (which is always a good thing ! :D )
H.A.K Posted November 6, 2012 Posted November 6, 2012 More and more people are doing these 1/87 cars. Its good to see that. Very nice.
Zarana-X Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Nice Work! The stock one had two sets of front turn signals! If they want more HO-scale cars, Walls Mart has some by their Hot Wheels section, I can't remember what they are called, but they have some sort of goofy name on them, but the cars are good quality for about $2 each.
Austin T Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Lets just hope you dont catch the HO bug. Very nice little build.
