Hawk312 Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 This is a really old build, almost 10 years old. But I had it out of the case to get pictures, so I thought I would share them with everyone. I can`t remember a whole lot about this build, but it is still one of my favorites. From memory, the paint is duplicolor.
Scuderia Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Yeah that's very catchy, are those stripes painted on as well or decal?
Helix Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Everyone of these I've seen built looks fantastic, better get myself one, yours is awesome, good job
Cato Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 David, Do you color sand the clear or thin heavily? Do you guide coat the primer and sand flat?
crazyjim Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 I don't care how old it is. I like the SHINY :)
cobraman Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 David, as a collector of scale Cobra's with a 600 + piece collection I can tell you that yours is a very fine looking replica. I like it a lot. Well done !
slusher Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Best one l have seen, love the red. looks like a fresh build..

Hawk312 Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 Thanks everyone! From memory, I built this one using the Baldwin Motion Drag Cobra kit from way back when. Yeah that's very catchy, are those stripes painted on as well or decal? Thanks. The stripes were masked and painted, and then clear coated.

Hawk312 Posted November 9, 2012 Author Posted November 9, 2012 Thanks again everyone! Sorry Cato, I missed your response... David, Do you color sand the clear or thin heavily? Do you guide coat the primer and sand flat? For this one, because it was so small with lots of curves, I didn`t guide coat this like I do sometimes with the big ones. From memory, I just used a few coats of Duplicolor grey primer, then sanded and sprayed the base red, and then masked and painted the gold stripes. Then I applied 5-6 coats of clear. I do sand the clear, starting with 1500 and moving up to 3000, followed by several grades of compounds. I have a good bit of detail on my process in MCM issue 150.
Dave Wood Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Dave I have an old Fairlane in my garage I havent touched in years, Could you come over and back it out and see how it looks ? LOL Very Nice looking Cobra!
ForcedAWD Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Flawless build David! Your paint work is incredible.

For my ERA I shot guide coats and did sanding sticks for weeks. Color, stripes and lots of clear, much of it taken down from 1200 to 3 compound grades with wool and foam wheels. Thanks for sharing: BTW-seen here the paint is 20 years old.

Oh no, you`ve given me inspiration for yet another project! How long did it take you to build that?
Cato Posted November 10, 2012 Posted November 10, 2012 Wow, that is incredible! Oh no, you`ve given me inspiration for yet another project! How long did it take you to build that? Year and a half, '83 to '85. Complete make-over to this form in '91 - '92. From mild 428 to 550HP Sideoiler, magnesium pin drive Halibrands, this custom paint-the list and $$ goes on and on. I warn you all the Cobra models you start with are seriously compromised for accuracy. But I saw you bring that GT-350 back from the dead so I know you can get it right. Aren't your GM customers going to be miffed about you turning to the 'darkside'??
