Well, I made it up to page six before my eyes started to bug out. Wow. There... is no easy answers here. But there does seem to be some consensus on a few ideas. Good.
Perhaps if the "Q & A", and the "Tips & Tricks" keep getting cross bred, then lock one or the other (and never have to correct another thing in it), and add that title to the other title. Reduce two albums into one.

Right now I'm thinking about reworking the first section (General). Now it has only 2 subsections (Read the Rules and General).

I'm thinking about renaming the "General" section... maybe call it "Model Talk" or something. Not sure. Then moving the Q&A/Tips section up into the "General" area. So we would have:

GENERAL

• Read the Rules

• Welcome/Introduce Yourself (for new members)

• Model Talk (the revised "General" section, now strictly model/automotive-related topics only!)

• Modeling Q&A

• Tips, Tricks and Tutorials

So the current stand-alone Q&A/Tips section would go away, because those would now be at the top, within the "General" area. Then a new "off topic" section within the "Community" section, below Links, Advertisers and Web sites, where all the truly off-topic posts could go (except religion or politics, which we still won't allow!).

Any feedback welcome.

I would in all honesty lose the Q&A sub category and have it in the model talk. a : its just another thread to clean up and b: most of the questions asked would generally fit into a general model discussion as such anyway. Wouldn't they ?

My other point is, as Ace (garageguy) I think it was pointed out, people are generally to lazy to read whether its where to post in the right place or asking what color, what wheels did you use etc when its all right there at the start of the post in question. And although I can see where Brett Barrow is coming from regarding the current off topic section, heres how my take on how I read the whole forum. I look at the title of the post, if it interests me I'll open it, if it doesn't , I dont. If I do open it out of curiosity maybe from a vague title and it doesnt interest me I close it, takes about 10 seconds, maybe.

You do a great job of modding? this place and from my point of view Casey is becoming a lot better at it now as well,( he used to be I feel a little harsh( I dont think I've ever been affected either way, just a bystanders opinion)), but I dont think for a minute I could put up with a lot of the flack you two get.

I think that's the #1 thing the vast majority of members here don't want to come here and read-- drama. Be it complaining about how this or that is done or handled, nit-picking someone's build to personally challenge and prove them wrong, saying how his forum isn't as good as another forum, and so on. I don't want to come here and read it, and from replies I've seen, PMs I've received, and what Gregg himself has stated more than once, (almost) nobody else does either. All those types of posts add nothing positive to the forum, and while it shouldn't always be rainbows and sunshine around here, the dramatic posts are going to be frowned upon every time.

That's why for a LONG time I left Spotlight Hobbies board, being told my stuff "didn't belong on their board" and being talked to as I was an outsider, even getting snide remarked emails in my email box, finally just figured screw it I'm done. Now all you see on that board is stuff like I build so maybe someone can figure that out...........

I haven't said anything about this for a long time. Just kept my mouth shut and kept moving posts every single day, time after time after time. I even rewrote the descriptions under the "Q&A" and "Tips" headers to make it absolutely clear what goes where. But even that didn't work. People just kept on posting in the wrong place, and I just kept on moving them without saying a word or complaining about it. Over and over and over and over and over again. Just like I have so far sent out well over 500 PMs to people who don't have their full name in their posts, to many people not once but twice and even three times, explaining something that is clearly spelled out in the rules everyone is supposed to read and agree to before they sign up.

Well, I'm getting a little tired of being not only the mod, but also a babysitter. I'm tired of spending time sending notes to people about their full names, tired of arguing with them when they refuse to post their full names for all sorts of stupid reasons, and tired of moving posts because people can't be bothered with paying attention. And I'm tired of then getting slammed when I ask you guys to just do what you're supposed to do!

I know it can get frustrated and I don't blame ya for getting peaved, I just read the the way you put it and said it and it to me just didn't reflect to well on you or the forum. I don't know the answer of what to do or how to do it. I know you have the forum laid out to where it's easy to understand. I know I'm guilty of going into a thread and getting wrapped up in how cool a build is and not reading "Every" line in the entire thread. I just want to look at the car being built. So I can understand where someone may not read every detail and that falls on them. I know you have a points system for people doing the not so right things, maybe adapt that to this as well. If they can't follow the directions make them accountable somehow. That may not be the answer, just an idea. Like I said I don't have the answer but trying to keep everyone happy is not an easy deal. I know what it's like in some ways, having been a president of a model club for quite a few years.

And as grown ups, shouldn't we be able to take being reminded to observe the rules and pay attention to where we post? Otherwise, we're just like the idiot who gets mad at the cops because he gets a ticket for parking in front of a fire hydrant.

Grown ups should ACT like grown ups, and not a bunch of unruly, self-absorbed babies.

Agreed.

"Pinned" topics don't work. Most people ignore them.

I'm kind of liking Brett's idea... keep "General" limited to model-related topics, and maybe have the actual off-topic (my dog died, my wife left me, etc.) stuff down at the bottom of the page... maybe simply call it "Off Topic."

Not a bad idea, make it simpler in terms so people can follow it better. Q and A could be a bit much for some even though it's spelled out.

"Off-topic" "The Lounge" "Anything Goes (except politics and religion)*" leave it at the top of the page or put it at the bottom, no matter either way.

I'm sure there are probably just as many posters, if not more, who don't like all the modeling-related topics clogging up their sick-cat-stubbed-toe threads...

Sorry if I kinda went off on this one, but it kinda touched a nerve with me and the last couple of threads that dealt with similar issues got locked before I had a chance to comment on it.

*I've said it before and I'll say it again, I give you guys mad props for keeping politics and religion off this board. It's honestly the #1 reason I come here, because I know there won't be any of that here.

Amen!!!!!!!

If you have a General section, will you have a Major section, and a Captain section, or a Lieutenant section, too? I mean, not everybody has made top rank!

Harry I think you should have a "General Lee" section just for Danno

Having followed this forum for years now, there is nothing better available. The reason in my opinion is because of the rules and organization of this forum. I have watched and seen the changes, while I don't agree with them all, you will never please everyone. I may be new posting but I have seen alot of the drama on this site over the years, which the mods have done their best to control. I finally joined when I saw some control and organization. If not for that, I and maybe many others may not be here. We are all representatives of this hobby and I for one would rather build up than tear down. My 2 cents.

Granted, 8 pages are military rank puns. Which reminds me...

You really gotta Admiral the moderators for the great job they do!

Has anyone ever noticed these numbers at the bottom of the main page ?

Harry, this is good. I have a few suggestions. Per Jon Cole's suggestion, maybe merge the Modeling Q&A and the Tips, Tricks and Tutorials sections. This works since when people ask a question, the responses pretty much become tips and tricks.

I'd put the General / OT topic up in the General section. Believe me, people only scroll down until they think they've found the right category. The OT stuff will wind up back in the Model Talk section. Personally, I like the OT stuff on the board. As someone who knows a good number of folks for many years via boards and email and many, many of them in person, I like knowing what's going on in their lives. On another board I frequent, one Aussie member regularly posts what it's like to live on a farm in a small town in Australia. That's fascinating stuff. And once folks see people here as humans, the stupidity on the board goes down!

I like the Introduce Yourself topic. Other boards have this and people coming on board look for it. It's just a good community thing.

And one final thing. Having a topic "Read The Rules" as the first thing people see is a bit uninviting. Can we rename this "How To Use This Board" or something a bit more helpful and inviting? As I've suggested in the past, we need a tutorial about how the IP Board software works. I'm very computer literate and it took me a while to figure it all out. I'm sure other people have just walked away.

Thanks for having this conversation.

Kind of a side note, but sometimes, when a question is answered well, the question thread ends up containing at least one tip.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm searching for a tip on something in particular, it often helps me to check related questions on the topic. Sometimes there's an answer in there with just the information I need.

That's one of the main reasons I agree that the two section should become one, as others have suggested in this topic. There is a lot of overlap, and both are basically "How To" type sections. There's not much difference between a "How do I strip Testors enamel paint?" and "Here's how I use SuperClean to strip paint", though each fits into a different section the way they are posted.

I like the idea of those two sections (or one :D ) being moved up the forum page, too, as I think that technical knowledge is one of the main reasons people visit this forum. Plus, the knowledge and information in that section is what forms the core of a forum such as this. Good, helpful, accurate information on how to build models is timeless, universal, and something we all can learn from, no matter how long we've been building.
