martinfan5 Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) Tomo's thread about his model that melted , and the discussion reminded me of the this incident that happened last month to guy that just bought a Fox Bodied Mustang that had a faulty NOS tank in it http://www.newswest9.com/story/22698761/car-explodes-in-midland Staff ReportNewsWest 9 MIDLAND - The summer heat is not only taking a toll on our electricity. It also took a toll on someone's prized possession. A Midland neighborhood was shook up on Wednesday afternoon when a Mustang was blown apart. The Fire Marshal tells NewsWest 9, the owner had nitrous oxide hooked up and the heat caused the bottled gas to blow. The car was ripped apart. We're told the front windshield blew onto the roof and pieces of the vehicle could be found three houses down. The recently bought vehicle is a total loss. Fortunately, no one was hurt. MachinistMark Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Nos is a brand.... N2O is a gas. And yeah nitrous bottles (any pressurized vessel) and heat is bad trouble. I get a kick out of the street race guys heating their bottles with propane torches.... Then I get the hell away from them!
Blown03SVT Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) That is why they make bottle heaters, to help maintain a consistant pressure in a safe way. I can only imagine how hot it was in that car in the Texas summer heat and how many pounds of N2O where in it to make it burst like that. Edited July 18, 2013 by Blown03SVT
clovis Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Yikes!!! What if that thing had blown while someone was driving it? Do you all remember the pictures that circulated on the 'net many years ago of a NOS bottle that exploded in a car in someone's garage? Wow. It cracked the brick cement joints on the house.
Danno Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Why automatically blame the tank? Misuse is a far more common causation than a faulty vessel.
Blown03SVT Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 That is true Danno, there are plenty of variables that probably led to the rupture. More than likely in this scenario the design limits of the bottle were exceded based on how much the bottle was filled and not having enough room in the bottle to account for expansion. It reminds me of the old saying " an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
Dragfreak Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 It must have had a bad blow off valve in it for it to completely explode rather than blow the nitrous out of the blow down tube under the car

MachinistMark Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 It must have had a bad blow off valve in it for it to completely explode rather than blow the nitrous out of the blow down tube under the car Bingo. Its pretty much the only possible cause
MachinistMark Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Okay.... Not sure what the Hindenburg has to do with nitrous oxide... Which isn't even flammable, but an oxidizer... You skip your Alzheimer's medsagain Greg?
martinfan5 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) Why automatically blame the tank? Misuse is a far more common causation than a faulty vessel. And who is that aimed at? I can not find the place that I first read about this, there was a pic that showed the tank, and from what I read, is that company that made the tank is known to make bad N20 tanks. martinfan5 Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 (edited) Nos is a brand.... N2O is a gas. You are absolutely right, made a mistake , to much exposure to the "Fast" movies and the use NOS when talking about N20 Edited July 18, 2013 by martinfan5
Guest Johnny Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Why automatically blame the tank? Misuse is a far more common causation than a faulty vessel. I have yet to see a NOS bottle that did not have a pressure relief valve and I filled a few hundred myself! And remember guys, real life Isn't like fast and furious and the gigantic fireball explosion of a NON-FLAMIBLE gas!

Danno Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Today's News Poll: 245 viewers heard about this Mustang today. 245 viewers also heard about the Hindenburg today, too. Thus, ANYBODY who ever heard about the Hindenburg today thought about a Mustang. Thus proving conclusively that Mustangs blow up like the Hindenburg every time someone thinks of them.

mikemodeler Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Nos is a brand.... N2O is a gas. Actually NOS is an energy drink, formerly endorsed by "shrub" Busch.

Joe Handley Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Not the first time "ve heard about this happening, there was something about a 4th gen T/A that had that happen as well as a Nissan Maxima, and the Maxima was parked in the owner's garage! Personally, I'd prefer boost and/or displacement over laughing gas, you don't need to find someplace to refill your turbocharger or supercharger and you have the power when you want/need it, not when a bottle taking up trunk space isn't empty.
