1972coronet Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 The differences between the "6.6 Litre" and "T/A 6.6" , other than Oldsmobile 403 versus Pontiac 400 is that the latter wasn't available on cars with the dreaded California Emissions ; those were stuck with the "6.6 Litre" low-compression smog-hog . Oddly , the Trans Ams with the real engine (the Pontiac 400) were built in the Van Nuys , Ca plant , but one couldn't buy one here ! Same goes for 4-speed models ... *personally , I think that the 1977 - 1981 Firebird / T.A. was an ugly design . It's those yucky square headlamps and panel-length tail light / panel which "ruin" the flow of the rest of the otherwise gorgeous Pontiac F-Body*
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) The 1977 Trans Am "Special Edition" model used in the movie traces back to a GM Design show car created for Bill Mitchell (VP of Design) for the 1974 GM Division Show Circuit. Bill liked the Lotus F1 race car "John Player Special" livery and used that Black and Gold paint scheme to create the car. Buford T. Justice was based on a real Florida Sherrif of the same name. Just for fun...who knows the Bandit's real name? (No fair looking it up and don't say Burt Reynolds ) Edited July 21, 2013 by MAGNUM4342
kevjoh Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Could you post a shot of the tread pattern on the tires
Drake69 Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) Just for fun...who knows the Bandit's real name? (No fair looking it up and don't say Burt Reynolds ) Frog called him "Bo" at one point in the movie, but his actual name is Bo "Bandit" Darville in the screenplay copy I have. I'll get pix of the tread pattern when I can get my camera charged back up. Edited July 21, 2013 by Drake69
mnwildpunk Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Isn't it Beau something I know he tells sally fields when she asks
MAGNUM4342 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) Allen got it. Bo "Bandit" Darville. From what i've heard, Reynolds had to talk Sally Field into taking the part of Carrie. She thought the part was too light. I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion. Edited July 21, 2013 by MAGNUM4342
beeRS Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 WOW. I did not know this kit was available. I have seen the Revel/Monogram 78 model and had at first just assumed this was the same kit in the box. I've always wanted to build a Bandit, but have not been keen on working with the AMT kit (which is not as nice as this by a long way). Thanks for this review. I'll get my order in.
Brett Barrow Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Hows the body accuracy? It's a little slab-sided, which is typical for the converted die-cast to plastic bodied kits.
fumi Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I've just received the kit yesterday, the first thing I noticed when I pulled out the body is that the front windshield seems very low, as though it has a chopped top. I'm also not sure if the shape of the rocker panel is correct, the bulge is quite pronounced on the kit body.
blunc Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 I suspect the real car had real dual exhaust, not the single pipe as seen in the kit...
crowe-t Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Silly question... Was this kit just released by Revell?
kalbert Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 (edited) Sillier question... Think theres any chance for a LeMans Enforcer? Edited August 1, 2013 by kalbert
Casey Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Silly question... Was this kit just released by Revell? Yes, very recently.
crowe-t Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 (edited) Looking at the pictures, it seems that the roof area between the T-Tops is too wide. Did the '77 Trans Am look like this? I seem to remember the area between the T-Tops being narrower. Edited August 1, 2013 by crowe-t

I seem to remember the area between the T-Tops being narrower. Apparently there were two different types of t-tops used between '77 and '78. The Monogram, MPC, and Revell kits all differ in this detail. Edited August 1, 2013 by Rob Hall

Yes, there were two styles of T-Tops offered on the Gen 2 cars, the wide bar tops were by Hurst, if I remember correctly, and the narrow bar tops I believe were GM Corporate.
crowe-t Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) How does the body of this new Revell 'Bandit' Trans Am compare to the Monogram '78 kit and the MPC Blackbird Trans Am kits? I think the MPC is either a '77 or '78 model year, but not sure. The windshield area does look a bit shorter in the pictures of the new Revell 'Bandit' kit. Edited August 3, 2013 by crowe-t
cooltoys1 Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Hows the body accuracy? Terrible. Slab sided, and the roof is all wrong. Looks chopped and squashed. I have a real 77 to compare it to, and believe me, its bad. Your better off with the Warbird kit.
crowe-t Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 (edited) Is the AMT Smokey & Bandit Pontiac Trans Am kit a re-issue of the MPC Blackbird kit? When MPC and AMT were under the ERTL/RC2 brand it seems a lot of the old MPC kits were re-packeged with the AMT name. Edited August 4, 2013 by crowe-t
