HI,

I asked my daughter what I can get her boyfriend for Christmas and she said he likes model cars, the kind with lots of parts that he can glue and paint. No plastic snap togethers. I dont know a thing about model cars. Do the types of cars he likes to put together have a certain name? What is diecast? Can anyone recommend a certain type? He likes 2011 Camero's. Is there a recommended store to buy these at? any advice is helpful. Thanks.

I will let the Michigan guys chime in on what may be local to where you are at but if you want a couple of websites of retailers that could help you, then I suggest either of these two:

www.modelroundup.com

www.plastic-models.com

Both have great customer service and a wide selection of kits of all kinds.

Diecast is a metal replica of a vehicle, usually already assembled and comes in sizes ranging from 1/18th to 1/64th. Some collect them but their popularity isn't as great as it once was.

Happy hunting!

Well there are a couple of new Camaro kits out. The ones from AMT are curbside (no engine) but are available as a Convertible and in ZL-1 configurations. Revell also offers a Camaro SS kit that has an engine and higher part content.

You have already been giving some good advise from the other guys already. You may just try a local Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon , a hobby shop would be a great place to shop but if funds are low the coupon works great.

Depending on when you need to make this purchase if nothing is close go to the web.

By the way you have chosen a great site for questions.

I am 3 miles north of the Michigan Ohio line. I do most of my hobby shopping in Monroe MI or Toledo OH areas.

A gift card for a specific hobby store that he frequents is the easiest best solution because there is a lot of variables to the kits on the shelves. Some of the best box art hides some of the worst kits. even models made by the same company can vary in quality. try to get a specific list from your daughter , then ask the guy in the model isle for an opinion. Also if the boyfriend only builds in one scale make sure you buy the right scale. I can answer a more specific question with a lot more clarity . Good Luck hope you get some answers that are helpful and make sense.

I absolutely second Randy's thoughts and encourage you to follow this path.

If you would really rather get an actual item, either the specific want-list or "go Christmas shopping" with him to the hobby shop of choice is the safest route.

If you're in the Metro Detroit area, get a gift certificate from either Great Lakes Hobby in Utica, the Model Cave in Ypsilanti,Nankin's in Farmington,Whistle Stop in Saint Clair Shores,or P&D in Roseville.

We must all remember a few things here .

Most but not all guys like the gift card.

Women like to open a gift , its that thought thing they keep bringing up.

We may all agree on a gift card but that is not what she asked about.
