chevyfever2009 Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 What do you think is very important when trading with people on the fourm or in general? One my key guidelines is communication from when you begin talking about trading items from beginning to when you receive your end of the trade
Tom Geiger Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Equity, being fair. Make sure the other guy got an even deal. I'm sure the vast majority of folks here feel that way, but when I've posted here for trades, I've gotten PMs from guys suggesting a real lopsided deal in their favor!

True like trying to trade you a very common kit for a harder to find kit
Harry P. Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I have been asked to intervene and settle trade disputes many times, and from experience I can say that the absolute NUMBER ONE rule to keep in mind when you trade is this: There are NO GUARANTEES that your trade will go as expected.

Especially when you wind up with two Ralph Cramdens, both trying to get the upper hand in a deal! In many cases if someone I know posts they need something, or a part I have that they need for a current build, I'll just send it to them! I'm just happy to send it where it will get used. Nothing more needed in return.
kitbash1 Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 HONESTY, communication, fair trade act.. And no B.S.
Austin T Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 The ones I can't stand are the ones who tell a lot of guys they are interested in what they offer but try and tell them "Im getting kit x from so and so, wana throw in something else?" to try and get more in their favor. Or here's another one when guys say "I'm interested in anything!" and then get mad when you have nothing they like.

To expand Tom's point a bit more, consider the costs involved. If I am asked to trade a newer or just released kit for some older kit from 10-15 years ago, I probably will be spending twice as much for my end of the trade than you are. While I can buy a kit at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon, I have to weigh the cost of buying that kit and the shipping and sometimes spending $25-30 for a kit to trade for one that I can pick up at a swap meet for $10-15. I have some older kits that aren't in production anymore and could easily list them on eBay for crazy money but would rather look for a fair trade here. I never intended to make money in this hobby, just some friends and learn a few new skills.
cobraman Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I prefer to trade with someone who has been around for awhile. Doesn't mean that a newbie wouldn't be a good trader I just am more careful. Now that I think about it the one bad trade I had was with someone here who has been here a long time ( I will not say who ). Thankfully Casey got involved and I got the stuff I sent returned. Maybe I should rethink my decission. If I have something someone needs I am always happy to send it with nothing in return.

So true the only bad trade I had was with someone who's been here a long time also so after 4 months I finally got my part of the trade

bbowser Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 The problem I see with trades (entire kits, not just parts and pieces) is it's never just a swap, like it would be in person. You and I both have to pay shipping. So I'm giving up a kit to get a kit, but it still costs me $8-10. I'm just as well off going to the 'bay or a dealer and I still have my original kit as well. I'm all for helping someone out, just be aware going in that it's not economical.

Very good point Bruce. l have not ever had a bad trade but as bruce points out it costs 10 bucks to trade and kits are hard to come by on a fixed income. l rarely trade due to shipping costs and l can put the 10 bucks toward another. As far as parts l never mind helping fellow builders if l have the parts to give. l enjoy helping anytime l can.

Yeah, the swap has to be pretty worthwhile because sometimes I don't have a box so it's off to Staples to get a box and then to the PO. I have started to re-think my swapping as I started keeping track of what it was costing me.
Daddyfink Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I have had good experiences trading so far. Sometime I trade for something I really don't need just to help out he person that really wanted what I had. I know it is going to cost to ship and if it seems crazy, I will politely decline the trade. I am blessed to have a nice collection of kits, but, I am not a hobby shop and don't always have what someone maybe looking for, so yes, it helps when you post what you are looking for instead of having us guess what you want.
Tom Geiger Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Model Trades Wanted! Let me know what you are looking for and what you have to trade!
Eshaver Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 With the exception of only a couple of squirrels that both George 53 an I know , oh Disabled Modeler knows em too, I've done well. If it's something small and it's something that dosent cost more than 2.00 to mail it , heck, I'll send stuff out for free, you ask around , theres people here who know I try and help everybody . I see a lot of the Newer guys here wanting "Pie in da Sky deals " . Hey , you might win a few hard to find deals , kits etc, you'll get nothing from me when all you want to put up is some common kit that's easy to find , even at the next show .................
