Hello again guys,

Here's a very old kit from italeri, a 1955 300 SL Gull Wing.

I bought this kit secondhand with a very cheap price, only 18 US dollars including postage.

The kit was already started and the box was all squashed but luckily the parts were all still complete.

I stripped the original color, spraypainted it with tamiya gun metal, and then clearcoated with gloss clear from mr hobby.

I also did small weathering on the exhaust pipes to obtain heat stained look.

Let me know what you think and thanks for looking.

Best Regards

Nice job on a tricky kit. Is this the 1/24 or 1/16 version?

It would be nice to see some interior shots. Or did you glue the doors shut?

The kit is 1/24 ,I didnt glue the doors shut, but the kit originally came without separated doors that can be opened.

Thanks for your kind comments guys.

Does anybody know how this kit compares to AMT's Gullwing kit?

Scott

simonr probably gave the best comparison.

Note that the Italeri is 1:24 scale and the AMT is 1:25. Both have advantages and disadvantages. When I get around to it at this scale, I'd probably choose AMT because it has a slightly more accurate fender shape and the body is molded in one piece (doors, hood, trunk are separate) -- Italeri requires mating the lower body valances both front and rear (requiring putty work to blend them), lacks the stock bellypan under the car, and (unilke Italeri's 1:16) the doors appear to be molded shut. I particularly like the fact that AMT offers a choice of stock wheels or knock-off Rudge wheels, and has workable steering.

There are other detail differences, and these kits are cheap enough to get both and determine which way you want to go. Any Gullwing kit, and some other Mercedes kits, can benefit from replacing decal emblems with PE metal stickers (mine are by FMD, part FA-24003, from stradasports.com).
